This video was extremely helpful. I am a female in my mid-50s. I was diagnosed with HLA-B27 in my early 40s after all the cartilage in my knees was destroyed, starting when I was 34. After several knee surgeries that did not help, I had both knees replaced when I was 41. To say it was agonizing is putting it mildly. I still suffer from back, neck and shoulder pain, general stiffness, and frequent tendinitis in arms, legs, and especially, ankles and feet. Another interesting symptom is that expansion of my rib cage when I breathe is restricted. A doctor measured the circumference of my rib cage when I inhaled versus when I exhaled, and the difference between the two is much smaller than it should be. This is the reason the video says the lungs can be affected. I have been taking sulfasalazine for about two years and it does make a big difference. However, it has often been in short supply due to the pandemic, and when I have to go for weeks or months without it, my illness becomes much worse. I have had to become quite sedentary in recent years because even normal exercise will cause tendinitis flare ups and pain.

I'm in my early 50s and have been suffering from AS probably since my late teens, although it was only 13 years ago that a doctor could put a name on my condition, which has been a handicap for most of my life. Recently, 3 years ago, besides the medication and other medical treatments, I started to practice indoor rowing, a sport which if it's done properly, with the proper mechanics, can contribute greatly to muscle your back (actually about 76% of your body muscle). I found great benefits in that sports to reduce my pain as well as to get back in shape. A few months ago I was even able to row 100 km in one sitting. I would personally recommend this kind of back muscle reinforcing sport - as well as swimming or yoga I've been told - to fellow people suffering from AS.

Sorry to hear. Im 40 year old male and I was diagnosed with AS aroun 15-16. Before that I was misdiagnosed with rheumatoid fever first then rheumatoid arthritis. I had the good fortune to become a case study by one of the best immunologist in Australia at the time in mid 90s. At the time it was not common to accept juvenile arthritis, especially AS. Through the immunologists dedication eventually it was confirmed I had AS. But it would have been simple form them to see my grandma had and HLAB27 in young male can trigger onsets. My case went to prove and break the stigma that AS is only an disease for old people and mainly females. I even was taking vioxx from trial stage (honestly it was one drug did give me mobility back). AS at my teen age effected me a lot. I didnt get to participate in activities most kid did, like play sports because I was too sheltered. Only to learn later being active and mobile is best form treatment for AS. I hope you are managing well. I would recommend going to the gym and strengthening muscles around your joints. Going to allowed stop taking drugs like Celebrex and other strong celecoxib family and avoid their side effects. Stay mobile and stay strong.

I'm taking cortisone and antibiotic in order to reduse the inflammation rate and after one month I will do MRI .. The most thing I hate that everyone was laughing on my pain and keep saying that I'm facing a mental issue !! Now my company refused to let me work remotely even I have provided them with more than 7 medical reports.. and I don't know what should I do.. now Im active and have less pain, but when I do any movement I fell the pain especially in my hips and knees.. I wish a healthy life for all of us, because this is very painful.

I would add for educational purposes the diagnostic criteria for this condition; those being lower back pain present for 3 months relieved by exercise but worsened by rest, restriction of motion of the lumbar spine in the sagittal and frontal planes, and restriction of chest expansion correlated to normal values. Radiologically, there is sacroilitis >grade 2 bilaterally or >3/4 unilaterally.

I had so much pain in different parts of my body… No one believed me because I am a young female… My knees, my back, my neck, my chest and sometimes hands… Extreme fatigue…when I was 15-17 I was sleeping most of my free time (still nobody noticed that something could be actually wrong with me)… This is crazy to after so many years learn that I’ve been living with chronic condition… My GP suspects ankylosing spondylitis but I we will see what the rheumatologist says. And previous doctors all this time were giving me supplements with glucosamine, stretching exercises and physiotherapy… They would know if they would have done stupid blood test for arthritis with HLA B27… I am So disappointed, tired and angry that for all this time I thought it’s all my fault and I am just lazy and the pain is either my fault or in my head.

Two small children, told to get someone to look after them and lie down for 3 months. Instead I forced myself to move as much ad possible. I met a healer who told me, simply stop eating pork. I being young thought " what monsense" In the meantime I'm up and down with pain but persevere. A few years later, again another healer says don't eat pork. So I did cut out pork. No pain full mobility. I decided after 6 months to eat pork. I was crippled with pain. Since then I never ate pork and have no problem. I need to add that I am also highly sensitive to any processed foods so I only eat natural foods, no fast food or processed food.

I came across this video by accident, whilst browsing, and noticed, for the very 1st thing, something called Enthesitis in the outer ankle ball 😳. I've been suffering with this chronic pain which affects my legs so much, I often cannot walk well or properly. It feels increasingly like preclampsia without the pregnancy (I know the experience as suffering with this before birth of my son for several weeks prior to his birth). What I would like to know more, in detail, what I can do, if possible, to decrease its overall affect on my mobility problems which, without spelling it out, affects my balance on a daily basis. I'm consistently having to use a clutch or two to get about, particularly during hospital or town visits. I know this isn't helping my gait but feel more confidence in using this more due to the upper arm/body support clutch 'offers' compared to a walking stick(s). Any advice/suggestions would be great 👍. And thank you for your useful video ❤.

I have this as well as many other painful diseases such as lupus, cervical discogenic disease to name a few. I cant sleep on my belly i get stuck on my back, and my spine feels like a closed accordian that needs to open up.

I just figured out this year that this AS is what I have. I get the pain whenever I eat candy or something with chemicals like aspartame. I fast and it goes away. Now I'm wondering if not eating gluten will help. Have you tried cutting out gluten or the chemicals?

Hi all, I am 54 year old male , just diagnosed with this after years of much pain , however upon reading your posts from this and other sites I think I may have had this much longer probably mid-teens my problems started , cartilage exploded in my right knee then 2 years later massive bone spur removal same knee , I was born with both feet broken and remember wearing special shoes , not quite Forrest Gump...... but over the years I've had 5 procedures on my knee as well as surgery on both shoulders full tear rotator cuff and at present have a thickened achilles which is rather painful and have binocular diplopia , can any of you guys say if this condition messes with your blood sugar ?? I am and have always worked hard at my job and am reasonably fit but not so sporty ! When my neurologist showed me my mri results I have to say I felt alarmed on the slides he showed me my neck and lower back degeneration disc pushing inward toward spinal cord , he did want to discuss surgery but I didn't ,not ready for that !!

@sarahb77952 жыл бұрын
Thank you for explaining this so simply. I like to be informed so that I can speak to my doctors on a higher level. Edit: It would be good to mention that the pain can be extremely severe and flare ups can be VERY sudden. TMJ is common with AS (you didn’t mention that). In my case, the TMJ pain is so severe that it causes excruciating pain & sudden vomiting (literally no warning). I take Omeprazole but most of the time the pain is so severe that even that drug does literally nothing to stop the vomiting. It genuinely feels like I’m dying when the pain is that bad. Unfortunately the ER is useless because they don’t seem to grasp that, so they treat you like you’re drug-seeking when you just want to not feel like you’re dying. GP’s are afraid of giving out *realistic* pain prescriptions because the College of Physicians are afraid of opioid addiction -but they don’t seem to worry about suicide because of extreme pain. Most patients just want to suffer less (tolerable level), and it doesn’t really matter how that happens; we would rather be cured/ “fixed” than take medications for our whole lives, so medications are just a means to an end. In my experience, I try to take the least amount of meds possible because I know they’re bad for my organs long term, but I often have to take them anyways because of that dying feeling. I wish that doctors would understand that medication is not the first choice for everyone; it’s a last resort, but if people like me who are responsible with our meds are saying we need something stronger *occasionally*, PLEASE listen. It’s really unfair to under-medicate us because your College says so. Im so tired of being depressed because of always being in pain. That’s unfair to me and others like me. We just want to try and enjoy our lives but we can’t if we aren’t being helped properly. Btw: My pain clinic suggested taking Magnesium regularly to help with the pain btw.

bamboo spine or in fact any radiographic evidence of AS/fusion is WAAAAAY toooo late to treat. New gold standard s/b MRI of SI joints with Gadolinium contrast, looking for subtle signs of bone marrow edema, then treatment can be specific, targeted and timely.

Hi Sarah I am 37. I was diagnosed just last month as well. Like you I have always felt the dull lower back pain growing up as a child as well as the fatigue. Before covid I was a very active person. Right now most exercises hurts where I use do most exercise without pain, right now I am having pain. My aunt told me that I am making up the pain that I explained. This was before I was diagnosed. Every day is a struggle I struggle to get out of bed because of the fatigue. If the fatigue lifts I am just in pain. Thank you for writing this. I appreciate it
