I have greatly reduced and eliminated pain by cutting out all sugar, starch and processed food..... I feel great... it is totally worth it....

That worked for me, too. About 6 weeks after stopping sugar and food additives-switching entirely to whole foods and no grains-the shooting pains at night stopped, function improved, and my arthritis seems to be in remission. That was two years ago, and the clean diet seems to have halted the progression. If you haven’t tried this, please consider. The effort is so worth it!

I had aching hands and got a magnetic bracelet..it seemed to stop the pain in my left hand..then my right hand started to hurt..so I put the bracelet on my right wrist..the pain stopped...then my left hand started to hurt again So i decided to get another bracelet..both hands pain free...my neighbour said that's nonsense. Those magnets are too small to do anything..I said to him, I'm pain free..if I believe they work and have no pain, then they work.. even if my belief is what's making them work, then it's worth wearing them...the mind is a powerful thing.

I am an old (70’s) lab tech that overused my hands for years. I had carpal tunnel release surgeries in both hands and had lost strength in my hands and had pain in my finger joints. During covid I started making sourdough bread and at first kneading the dough was not very comfortable, but the bread was awesome so I kept going. Today my grip is much better and my pain is minimal and my homemade bread is my grand children’s favorite treat.

I am 73 and a retired nurse. I am OA in several joints but my thumbs are the worst. I found that paraffin wax treatments ( you can buy a kit that melts the wax in a tub) put your hands in and once you remove them, they are coated with warm wax which is soothing for pain and 20 min later peel wax off like a pair of gloves. Really helps me and the extra result is great skin.

I have probably over used my hands my entire life sewing, painting, wallpapering, holding medical claims in my hands for 12 years or more and picture framing for 20 years. I never thought of treatment for me. It is now an option. My right hand hates my Ipad as I use it many hours a day. I knew the answer to this; rest it. Thank you.

I have osteoarthritis which began in my early 30’s due to an injury to my thumb. I’ve found a wonderful brace that I use when gardening or other hand intensive things. It keeps my hand from the intense swelling I get so minimizes the pain. Other than that my biggest obstacle is opening jars and even the jar grips don’t always help. I love watercolors and when the pain is bad I can’t paint because I don’t have enough control of the brushes. I feel for everyone dealing with this.

I have pain/arthritis in every joint in my body but it’s not RA. I am sero-negative for all the autoimmune diseases they could measure. I’m just bursting with arthritis, I guess. Had a spinal fusion at 44, artificial hip at 45, spinal cord stimulator at 52, now at 53 my spine, knees, hips, legs, feet, shoulders, neck and hands are all inflamed and painful and I walk with a cane. Even my ribs have inflammation as I was just diagnosed with costochondritis. Im in PT for both that and my hands. I basically deal with the pain by having injections several times a year and going to PT, plus lots of piecemeal techniques I use depending on what hurts. I agree that being calm and living healthy makes a difference, but there is some chronic pain that goes beyond what you can fix with lifestyle changes. That’s what I deal with every day.

Quality movement out in nature, movement that gets your heart pumping, movement that excites you. 3.) Good, healthy, sustaining relationships that bring you to life not drain you. 4.) Stress management. Choose things that bring you joy, calm the mind and bring cortisol down. 5.) A healthy, varied diet.

Thank you for summarizing this. It was so helpful! :)
I agree! I have an inflammatory arthritis (Axial and Peripheral Spondyloarthritis) which is treated with several medications (an injectable medication Enbrel, Methotrexate, and Hydroxychloroquin) and also Osteoarthritis (knees, ankles, feet, and hands). As the doctor stated, movement is one of our best self-treatments for arthritic pain. I do 3 yoga classes a week and multiple daily walks with my small dog, not long walks since my dog doesn't require the longer walks needed by a big dog nor would a long walk be beneficial to me. Trying to do the longer walks my non-arthritic friends engage in ended up causing me crippling pain, unable to function for days after. My friends' walks were of a length perfect for them, just not of a length or at a pace suitable for me. Along with the doctor's recommendations I would add a positive mindset really helps. I've gone from needing a rollator (rolling walker), then using a single cane, to using no cane at all once I finally received a diagnosis and treatment from my Rheumatologist. My doctor wholeheartedly would agree with all this information!
I'm 52 and have degenerative arthritis in my left hand (not dominant for me) and it gets extremely painful. Maybe because I have been typing since I was 16 and have been a secretary my entire career. I have arthritis in my hips as well. My mother doesn't have any of this, but my grandmother, great-grandmother and other relatives did have incredibly painful arthritis. I always go the *natural route and greatly appreciate your in-depth explanation. And definitely checking out that app :) Thank you!

I put my OA thumbs through strength exercises and pain tolerance almost daily, or when I think about it, or when the pain is particularly noticeable. An intensive session of some or all of the things I do below is good for about a week’s almost pain free relief! I vigorously massage the base of my thumbs and small fingers with naturally sourced beeswax, sometimes mixed with nettles if available. I rotate the base of the thumbs. I pull and push and rub them one thumb and hand with the other, to the point of feeling a mild bruising pain as I do so and redness as the blood flows. I place my hands in a prayer position, digits and thumbs pushing against each other and rotate the thumbs through 180 degrees. I use a TENS patch machine, increasing the pain tolerance during each session. I don’t give in to it! I open jam jars and persevere with intricate tasks such as sewing, threading needles, changing batteries and screws or anything that requires the thumbs to pincer in a refined controlled manner.

The interesting thing is that no one in the known family has RA. I fully believe in "use it or lose it". I've also been lucky enough to have been able to manage my pain for the most with little to no pain medication although it's been very rough at times. Good morning, I saw the video, thank you for the explanation, I have osteoarthritis and I wanted to share, how I stopped the pain naturally. I studied macrobiotic and with my studies I self treated. It’s very simple but very difficult to do at the same time, at least at the beginning. I started with intermittent fasting, one meal a day, did that for 2 years, then I added to my life style, no sugar of any kind and no gluten or substitute of it. The only sugar I take is from whole fruits and that’s only a couple during my one meal a day as a desert. I am leaving a pain free life style and I feel as if I don’t have arthritis at all, not only that, but I have experienced so many wonderful changes in my body and mind. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the video . It is a good explanation of the differences between osteo and rheumatoid arthritis. I am 76 and have the bony knuckles on my left (dominant ) hand . One hand only . The doc said it is arthritis just by looking but blood tests have not indicated any arthritis . And I rarely have any pain except on the knuckle of the middle finger and no stiffness in the hand thumb or wrist. But I have a secret treatment! My mother had severe rheumatoid arthritis. She did at one time have the wax treatments as well as gold injections, and then was on medication . She got it early in her 30's and her hands were badly affected and crippled. One of the best ways of dealing with the pain that you have not mentioned and is not well known in NA but I would HIGHLY recommend it and that is wearing wrist warmers or fingerless mitts made of 100% angora and sleep with them . Of course this is not scientifically proven because it would not benefit any pharmaceuticals. But it has been known and used for eons in Europe. Now I have raised angoras for 40+ years and had heard of this but did not have personal experience with it until a few years ago when my knee started to give me difficulty . I made a knee warmer and was surprised how quickly it works and alleviated the pain . So I made wrist warmers and have worn them since. I can go without them in the daytime and in summer, unless I have been over using my hand and it becomes troublesome. Angora has insulating properties similar to other natural fibers, trapping the air between the bloom making it 8x warmer than wool. So wonderful for cold climates like we have on the Cdn prairies. But Angora also has incredible thermal properties which means the fibers have a hollow core. This makes it very light and provides the thermal qualities that no other natural fiber has to increase circulation and blood flow very quickly, reducing inflammation and thereby alleviating the pain . So sometimes I wrap the wrist warmer around the middle knuckle and the pain is usually gone in less than 5 minutes. It works faster than any oral med, and better than topicals without any side effects. There are different types of angora but overall it is a fine fiber with low micron count . English angora is the finest to use if you have any concerns about skin allergies. But if the warmers are made without any lycra or oils when processed, the angora won't have any reaction. There are a few thermal products made with angora available on amazon now like back and shoulder warmers, but most are not 100% angora. And rarely are the wrist warmers or fingerless mitts included in these thermal products. So best to find some 100% angora yarn and knit them yourself or have someone make them for you . The fingerless mitts are even better if you have pain in the knuckles or fingers . The thermal properties of angora are so incredible that sleeping with a 100% angora hat or neck warmer will prevent migraines from injuries like whiplash . I do wish that rheumatologists would make some effort to try this and advocate for it . It is an easy way to control and alleviate the pain and very luxurious as well.

Thank you so much for this video. I’ve really enjoyed leaning the difference between RA and OA. Speaking of medicine, it seems like no matter how much I read or watch videos, the conclusion I actually come to is that there’s no cure for almost all diseases. Cancer, aids, immune diseases, Alzheimer’s, etc... Most drugs suppress or sustain rather than cure, all drugs have side effects, and surgery always equals carpeting work only with a chance of regrowth or complications. No matter how many studies and advancements this field makes, nothing can top healthy food, sleep, herbs and air from nature along with body activity.

Finding your video (it was just suggested in my feed) was GREAT! I've had worsening symptoms for some time and at my annual physical a few months ago my doctor gave me a referral for a rheumatology consult and a hand surgery consult. The funny thing - by which I mean it's NOT funny in the least - is that the rheumatology office called me a week after my appointment and offered to set up an appointment. I thought this was great...until I found out the next appointment was for this coming October! This is what made your video popping up in my feed SO advantageous - I get a bit of a consult (and some food for thought) prior to my actual appointment. As for your suggestion of physical therapy: I have noticed that my involvement in music (jazz performance on bass) has helped immensely. It's especially helpful (both physically & musically) if I play the instrument everyday. So, I can confirm your recommendation from experience and if you don't play an instrument or perform an activity that utilizes & works your hands, then getting actual physical therapy would be a great addition! Thanks so much for your time!

I’m 35. Was told as a child I would “have arthritis” and have yet to get an official diagnosis or be taken seriously by any doctor I can afford to go to. I gave up 5 years ago on the business of “health care”. But I struggle daily, especially in the winter. My fingers drift and my knuckles are lumpy. Thank you for making this video.

I may have something similar, joint inflammation and pain in my hands that has come about quite suddenly. And twisting and turning of the fingers too. Apparently I don't have a clinical type of arthritis, but it's certainly painful and frustrating to make no progress.

I wish i knew what I had. For 20+ years I've had excruciating pain in some joints, particularly my shoulders & hands. My doc had my blood tested for arthritis, but said it wasnt that, so diagnosed 'non-arthritic joint pain' & told me to go home & live with it. I think it's something immunology related as i was diabetic until last year (pancreas transplant), have hypothyroidism & coeliac disease. I have pain at the base of my thumbs, but no squaring 🤔 & I've had bilateral frozen shoulders for a couple of decades

I have OA as did my mom. She never complained, but she had these typical bone changes. It started with me with pain in my thumb base. Got inflamed too and they gave me a hand brace to relax the joint. Now I have both hands affected. For pain control I take Turmeric capsules and drink a multi collagen powder in juice or tea in de morning. Also good home made bone broth. This collagen is good for cartilage growth of the joints and movement. Turmeric is anti inflammatory. If I not take it for a week, pain comes back.

My wife had bad arthritis in her hands and had 3 middle knuckle replacements over the years. She was scheduled to see the surgeon to get two more done. She was also looking for a surgeon to do a knee replacement. She had seen one surgeon but said she was too young at 56 years old for a knee replacement, so she was looking for another as the pain was so severe. At about that time we were looking to lose some weight and deal with some other health issues like pre-diabetes we both had. We decided to go on a therapeutic ketogenic diet. We accomplished to both lose about 50 lbs and, both reversed our pre-diabetes. Long story, short...her arthritis pain disappeared, not only in her hands but also her knee. That was over 3 years ago and she's still pain free. Later we found out that relief of arthritic pain is very common when going low carb. She had no idea at the time that this could happen, but she is extremely happy it did. She just wishes she had known this before having the original knuckle replacements done. The replacements have made her hands much weaker, although she was happy at the time because it removed the pain. We'll never eat high amounts of carbs again, especially refined carbs.

Dr. Ortiz I have been diagnosed with RA since 2008. I am a 65yr old female. Daily functions can be a real struggle. My first rheumatologist really thought I had psoriatic arthritis. My left hand second and third fingers Look like sausages. Huge and swollen constantly. I have never had psoriasis patches, so my diagnosis was changed to rheumatoid. Totally puzzling. I have taken numerous medications, the most recent Rinvoq. I have even had Remicade infusions. After a year or so I become immune to the meds so I move on to something else. It’s a struggle daily. Now I have arthritis in my shoulders and back. It is real and a daily challenge. God Bless.

I have had RA for 20 years since I was a teenager, it was my knees that got real swollen first then my hands and then everything. For years now I have had no issues with my knees for the most part it is either my hands are the worst or my feet are so bad I can't even get up. I was in the ER once when both my feet and legs were extremely swollen and tight and they did blood tests and an ultrasound and it turned out to be just a bad flare so I just went home and rested. But after 20 years I have only had treatment for maybe three years. It took 9 months when I first got the symptoms to see a doctor and then the next time it took six months to get an appointment. At first they just told me to take like Aleve and I did that every day for a year, then it was prednisone, sulfasalazine, methotrexate, remicade, humira, one was an infusion then an injection with the other one, one doctor was high dose naproxen, then I am not sure of the name but I think it was hydrochloroquine or something like that and another thing with that but I didn't get it and then they said I needed to see an eye doctor because of possible side effects. I was anemic when younger and then had extremely low vitamin D, don't know if that had anything to do with it. And can you ask like they say in commercials for a certain thing and get it or does that not happen and it is only a certain thing the doctor gives you that is possibly better for you? I know nothing, I just see a small pill you take once a day and wish I could get that and it helps me feel better rather than trying to inject myself with my anxiety and then I bleed and bruise or it spills out or it goes fine but then I am like did I do it right? It didn't help with the pain, I know it probably helped stopped the damage or whatever throughout my whole body and I thought arthritis was just like some pain and I didn't know it could affect everything. My toes are deformed, I had ingrown toenails before, my middle toe on one foot has no nail, it got hard and fell off years ago, my hands are always swollen and on my left hand my pinky points out straight to the left, I can put it flat on a table and line it up with my knuckles. I have a heel spur on my left foot and on my right foot that part next to my big toe is like a big knob sticking out and it is always red from pressing into my shoe every day. But now it is mostly my hands and feet, I can't open anything or walk good, but I got used to it in a way and I remember when I couldn't sit down or get up after sitting and trying to just put on a shirt was impossible and my elbows and shoulders were locked and I couldn't shower or anything. And my hands are swollen now and I did all this typing so I will pay for that later. Sorry to babble, I can say a lot more but I won't, just like to talk and don't have anyone so need to just put some text here and hoping I make it through another day, and now it is getting colder out so that is a whole thing again. Stay well everyone who can, thanks for the video!

Just try and stay positive through it all, find a way to get some sort of treasure through the torture. Find inspiration, the two things I found inspiring was the lyric "you don't choose your name, just what you leave in your wake." @@tennisfancaz22 Thanks. Well I never felt the lockdown at all, I never stayed home or quarantined for a single day ever, I watched the news and saw it all happen but it didn't change my life one bit. Many people stayed home and got big unemployment checks while I worked every day and drove an hour or more through the ice storms and all that to get to work for the same pay as usual. But I learned you have to just go with who you are and what you choose to do, I am 38 and a full time manager and I only make 11 bucks an hour while high school kids make more than that an hour working at fast food places. I have been fired from jobs for helping people, the companies don't appreciate me but as long as one coworker does that is enough for me to get by knowing I am seen by one other person despite whatever bad working conditions or low pay or whatever. I hope I have a life someday, I always wondered what if felt like to have a friend to call or do something with, I have never been on a date or had an actual vacation, I just want to know what it is like to have a weekend off and not be in pain and have money to do something or have somewhere to go.

Great info. Steroid injections don't hurt a little more, they hurt a lot, but only for a little while. I've had one in my thumb and 2 other fingers and they were worth it. The pain from my osteoarthritis was there all the time and unrelenting. After injections I felt so much relief and as of 7 years later, I still haven't had that arthritis pain return. My last two were done with ultra sound visual so the doctor could see what he was doing and were less painful. The first doctor did it blind, hit a nerve. If you decide to get an injection, make sure it is not done blindly!

I agree! They really hurt, bad! They’re also bad for you! They can deteriorate our joints as the meds stay in the body-and some docs have advised it can lead to blindness bcuz it hardens the nerve in our eyes. I was never taking them again-so please research that info as I just half listened to their warnings bcuz I already decided not to put up with that misery again! I also had an allergic reaction to the stuff they injected into my toe joint-ya, that was super fun, NOT! Since I took that shot, my lupus has been non stop flaring so I just feel stuck.
