This song takes me back a few decades now; back to my first real love whose name was Ann. I can’t listen to this beautiful song without sobbing like baby. I wonder where she is today. I love my wife dearly and our wonderful children and grandchildren, but when I hear this song how I would love to be that young man again, just to hold Ann once more and smell her hair, give one last kiss, and then drift back to now to the ones I love today. David Gates worked on the lyrics of his songs and may seem to have a different meaning for us than what it is in his heart. Everything I Own is the best example written in memory of his father. This song, "Ann" was written for his young daughter then... "He' a Good Lad" was about his toddler son in the late 60's . A genius man without argument.. Never seen/heard such talent in past and I guest we all could wish we have another of him in the very near future..Hoping...for all humanity..

9 years later my question is: "Did you sing it to her?" Please do not wait. I used to sing love songs for my husband before he passed away 29 months ago from terminal cancer. While he was undergoing treatment and I was caring for him, between exhaustion and worry I stopped singing. One evening as I was getting him ready for bed he asked me to sing our favorite song. I had recorded that song so I asked him if he wanted to listen to the recording or if he wanted me to sing live. He said live. I sang it with our any background music. He used to say my voice made its own music. Now I sing to him when I sit by his resting place. I wish for you both many more years of happiness. By the way my middle name is Anne.
