Very nice to share this. A nephew of mine, married years ago with a finnish lady. He moved to Helsinki and did the celebration party overthere. It was very interesting to see that in the church you had on one side the Finnish relatives and on the other side the Dutch relatives. Before the church service began, the Dutch were busy talking and laughing with each other and the Finns very calm and composed. Really striking difference. Later during dinner I got into conversation with the uncle and aunt of the bride, very nice, interested people. And although very quiet, also very warm and polite. They where from the more northern part of Finnland, eastern from Oulu, where nature rules and towns and villages are rare. But they where not provincial at all, very well behaviour, very well in English (she was english teacher, that helps :) and very educated.

The finish sound like they would make a dutch person very uncomfortable, it's true we do not like a lag in conversation (though we do not all talk all the time, haha) and are disturbed if you are afraid to be direct and share your own opinions because we like to know what's up and get to know you by your opinions. I'd feel like I never knew a person and couldn't relax around them if they are too careful. That's really what a dutch upbringing does to you as most other countries don't seem to feel that way.

The best thing you could do as a Finn is to educate the Dutch in Jean Sibelius, in my opinion the gretest composer who has ever lived. Dutch tend to gravitate towards central European composers without even considering Sibelius. Are you a "natural" Finn, or do you use Swedish a lot? This tendency for the "upper classes" to speak Swedish has probably died out now, but it would be nice to hear about it from a Finn. Because of my love of Sibelius I am interested in things Finnish, but I am certainly not "introverted" or quiet. I am British born, married to a Dutch lady. Came to the Netherlands when I was 54 with my Dutch wife, and our two girls. Both are thoroughly Dutch, and I wouldn't live anywhere else.

Are you even from here? Being able to speak Dutch is like the last thing on the "inburgeringschecklist". I can't tell you how many people I know that have lived here for years without speaking a single word of dutch. Over 90% of dutch people are able to speak proper English, so why take time out of your busy work schedule to learn a language that is frustratingly complicated only to be able to communicate in a different language with people whom you can already communicate with
@eloelo86252 жыл бұрын
Dutch people speak english well. Almost everybody. So you do not feel the pressure to learn Dutch. But despite that, a lot of people want to learn Dutch but then the problem begins. When you try to speak Dutch and your Dutch interlocutor hears that you are making mistakes he or she switches to english. Futhermore the Dutch language is EXTREMLY diffcult. The sounds are very specific and can change from person to person and from region to region. For example I can understand the best Belgian people. For me their accent and sounds are the most understandable. What's more. The words order changes a lot, there is a lot of phrases consisting of sveral other words which can be spread all over the sentence - is it called idioms? It makes learning Dutch a nightmare. But is very satisfying when you can understand what the Dutch are talking about

@@eloelo8625 Every language expresses a slightly different worldview, and has words and phrases that simply can't be translated word for word into other languages. This means learning any language is valuable. The Dutch, for example, have a word, "gezellig," that has no direct translation to English. By learning more about this word, I have learned a lot about Dutch culture. I agree it's difficult to learn (even though so many people say it's similar to English due to the large number of cognates.) I find Dutch very difficult to pronounce, but keep trying.

@@eloelo8625 thats so true. Most people that I know, including myself always talk English when there are people around me that doesnt speak native Dutch. I dont think we are. We're more direct when someone ask you something. Like when someone asks you what do think of my dress and we'll say its not really my taste. Or when we ask how are you, we actually mean how are you. Or when someone says I speak Dutch poorly we'll say yes you do but its a hard language. We're not going to compliment you when its not true or try to beat around the bush unlike a lot of people. We're just practical and say it like it is. And when someone is sad most of the Dutch I know honestly are very empathic, especially when youre friends or family. They care for the people around them and when someone ask for help they will do that even when they dont know you. But I cant speak for everyone of course.

How to be saved for sure - the gospel of our salvation in the dispensation of the grace of God (our gospel given to our Apostle Paul by Jesus Christ = 1 Corinthians 15:1-4). The gospel is not "Christ died for our sins" if we make Him Lord of our life. The gospel is not "Christ died for our sins" if we repent and get baptized. The gospel is not "Christ died for our sins" if we fear God and work righteousness. The gospel is not "Christ died for our sins" if we confess our sins and ask for His forgiveness. The gospel is not "Christ died for our sins" if we receive Him as our personal savior. The gospel is not "Christ died for our sins" if we invite the Lord into our heart. The gospel is not "Christ died for our sins" if we receive the Eucharist of holy communion. The gospel is not "Christ died for our sins" if we keep the commandments and sell our possessions. The gospel is not "Christ died for our sins" if we forgive those who have trespassed against us. The gospel is not "Christ died for our sins" if we stop sinning. The gospel is not "Christ died for our sins" if we walk the isle and join the church. The gospel is not "Christ died for our sins" if we pray the sinners prayer. The gospel is not "Christ died for our sins" if we are confirmed. The gospel is not "Christ died for our sins" if we deny ourself, take up our cross and follow Him. The gospel is not "Christ died for our sins" if we observe Yom Kippur. The gospel is not "Christ died for our sins" if we endure unto the end. The gospel is not "Christ died for our sins" if we kneel at an old fashioned altar and cry a hot scalding bucket of tears. The gospel is not "Christ died for our sins" if while listening to "Just as I am" we decide to walk the isle and give our heart to the Lord. The gospel is not "Christ died for our sins" if we pray the rosary. The gospel is not "Christ died for our sins" if we DO ANYTHING! Don't pervert it by adding to it. The gospel is found in 1 Corinthians chapter 15:1-4. "Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel... By which also ye are saved,... how that Christ died for our sins... he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures." Just keep it simple. (2 Corinthians 11:3) God says salvation is found through faith in the finished cross-work and resurrection (Ephesians 2:8-9.) It is only faith that can justify and count for our righteousness. But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness. (Romans 4:5) Salvation is not getting our sins forgiven, it's believing they already are! Source - Truth Time Radio - also on youtube - for solid Bible study!
