If I had to recommend three cities to visit, despite living in and loving Tampere, I would recommend Helsinki, Turku and Rovaniemi. The capital will provide you with more modern Finnish culture, Turku, the old capital, will provide you with older Finnish culture showing the past as a vassal of Sweden. More castles and medieval themes to see. And Rovaniemi of course is a great introduction to Lapland. If you go in the winter, you can enjoy the snow, the auroras, the ski resorts and Santa Claus. If you go in the summer, you can enjoy hiking, the tundra terrain, fishing or even river gold panning. If you don't want to make the long trip to Lapland, Tampere can be a nice a nice place to visit, especially if you prepare to be a bit mobile and also visit nearby towns. There are cultural spots and museums to visit in Tampere itself as well as the theme park of Särkänniemi. Nearby, there's the spa in Nokia, the ridgelands formed by the ice age in the towns of Valkeakoski (the Rapola ridge) or Pälkäne (Vehoniemi). The latter also has a museum of old cars. The ridge of Pyynikki in Tampere itself is also a pretty place and there's an outdoor adventure park there.

Helsinki, Turku and Tampere for sure. But I'd also visit the northern Finland. Oulu and Rovaniemi for example. Well Oulu is in the middle actually, but for us living in the south its very far in the north. :D Honestly the best way to experience Finland is to rent a car and drive from Helsinki to the north. The way to do it is to drive east from Helsinki to the Finnish lakeside and go via Punkaharju and Savonlinna for example to Kuopio. Then from Kuopio you drive to Oulu and from Oulu you simply drive down following the coastline to Turku and then back to Helsinki. But one needs to reserve like 2 weeks for such trip.

I'd suggest going to Helsinki for the innovative side of Finland, but do keep in mind that since being the capital it is very "touristy" and has a lot of influence from other countries (and it's very expensive). Turku for the historical side of Finland (it was the capital before Helsinki), and in Turku you should visit the Luostarinmäki Museum Quarter and Turku Castle. Tampere for the industrial evolution of Finland, and def check out The Finnish Labour Museum Werstas while you're there (it's free, and you get to see the old Finlayson Factory and get to know a lot about the social and working life history of Finland,) and The Amuri Museum Of Historic (Worker's) Housing (It's a quarter frozen in time, and it's said to be haunted too :D). If you would consider visiting maybe a fourth city, I'd suggest going to either Rovaniemi (for the Lapland experience either during mid summer or mid winter) or Oulu (The "armpit" of Finland + so many bicycles!), but they're both way more up north so travelling to either one would take time.

This has probably been commented to hell and back but from the "small towns" I'd suggest (if the visit is during late spring, summer or autumn) Rauma or something like Savonlinna. Rauma: One of the oldest cities and has a remarkably well preserved Old Rauma area of wooden housing and you get a very good picture on how we used to live. Our old capital Turku doesn't have much in the way of the "original housing" because it kept getting burned down. Savonlinna: Mostly modern but has one of the more impressive castles in Finland and is surrounded by beautiful lakes ( a word of warning though, "more impressive" castle in Finland mean "a small shitter" compared to the proper castles of the medieval europe. Saying "all smaller cities look the same", while true, is kinda leaving out a bit. We weren't really... City folk back in the day, why would we? There's TONS os space and mostly semi tribal / rural culture when we were a part of the early Swedish empire, once we were showed over to the... people from the east, the regime did do some build up, also moving our capital from Turku to Helsinki, forcing/coaxing many from Rauma and the other old cities to move there to build our new capital closer to the um... folks from the east. Then we gained our independence and the nice people who I will not name bombed the everliving shit out of our major cities. Meaning our proper city buildup (mostly) happened post WWII. Which means they all look the same because most of them were either solidified as cities after the war OR were bombed and rebuilt and expanded. Just my two cents in the form of a billion words

If summer, I would go to Porvoo simply because it's really pretty and bit different with lots of old wooden buildings.

👩🏼🌾🏞️🌅👋🏻😊 Hello, Dwayne! Where to go and what to see in Finland? If you have a limited amount of time to spend here, which I assume that would be the case, I would suggest the following: -- Helsinki (Helsingfors) Time to visit: Summer or Autumn. Helsinki is a human-size big little capital city. After midsummer until mid-August, though, a large portion of the inhabitants are on holiday and have gone to their summer cottages. The city is full of tourists instead. Despite that, summer is the best time to visit my home town. To avoid missing what makes Helsinki such a nice place to live in, you should find somebody local to show you around. I'm sure there would be no shortage of willing and enthusiastic 'Helsinkiates' to act as your guide. Being a seaside city, Helsinki's most attractive sites lie along the seashore, and are often missed by visitors erring around on their own in the downtown area. -- Turku (Åbo), the oldest town in Finland, our former capital and once the second biggest town in the Kingdom of Sweden, is a nice summer city, as well. Like Helsinki, it's a very walkable place, where you can visit the imposing cathedral, the castle and a charming apothecary, now a museum, all within walking distance one from the other. Also within walking distance is a unic outdoor museum area called Luostarinmäki (Klosterbacken in Swedish and Monastery Hill in English). It's the only surviving portion 11:34 of Åbo from the time before the big fire of 1827. It consists of wooden houses from about 1800. In the beginning of 1900, a part of the site was made into a handicraft museum which opened in 1940. Some of the houses are livened by workshops and stores tended by epoque-dressed personnel working or selling oldtime products like candy in the houses. All very authentic and fun. Sticking to the shoreline of Finland, the second-oldest town in Finland, Porvoo (Borgå) (founded in 1346 or in the 1380's) about an hour's drive east of Helsinki, has an idyllic oldtown worth a daytrip. A stone's throw east of Porvoo lies another old town called Loviisa (Lovisa), founded in 1745. It got its name from the Swedish Queen Lovisa Ulrika, wife of King Adolf Fredrik, who visited the area in 1752 and named the place Lovisa. The coastline to the West of Helsinki has a string of small charming old towns such as Ekenäs (Tammisaari), Hankoo (Hangö), Naantali (Nådendal), Kaskinen (Kaskö), Uusikaupunki (Nystad) Kristiinankaupunki (Kristinestad), Rauma (Raumo), Pori (Björneborg), a bigger city), Vaasa (Vasa) founded in 1606, another bigger one, Pietarsaari (Jakobstad), Raahe (Brahestad) Kokkola (Karleby) (not in the exact geographical order from south to north. Many of these towns are officially bilingual with a Swedish majority or a sizable Swedish-speaking population, because they're also among the oldest ones, founded when Finland was an integral part, the 'eastern half' of the Kingdom of Sweden. They were also old trading places and their Swedish names derive from the Swedish king Gustav Vasa, and two important Swedish nobelmen, Jakob De la Gardie and Per Brahe the younger, who founded Brahestad in 1649. Jakobstad was founded in 1652 by Ebba Brahe, the widow of Jakob De la Gardie. Helsinki was founded in 1550 by King Gustav Vasa. In case you wonder, Dwayne, why I'm listing all these coastal towns, it's just to give you an idea of how old the history of Finland is as far as 'civilisation' is concerned. All these towns were of course in existence well before being 'founded', that is, obtaining the privileges that towns had in those days. Oulu (Uleåborg) is the northernmost of these older coastal towns (founded in 1605 by the Swedish king Karl IX, third son of Gustav Vasa). It has grown quite a lot lately because it's a university town. (There are 13 universities in Finland and last year (2023) there were 168,000 students at these universities.In May of this year, their number had increased by 33,000.) Other than cities and towns, two very unic areas to visit are the huge archipelagos east and west of Helsinki, and the area of Punkaharju with the amazing ice-age eskers meandering through the lakes.

I kind of dislike the video you watched but yes Finland is pretty flat, the northern hills “vaarat” are rounded and gently sloped because they were under the ice cap for so long during the last ice age. From mid-Finland down to south mostly fields for agriculture and forests - and lakes. Which places you should visit depends on the season - and other preferences really. ❄️ Winter - Lapland, ☀️ Summer - somewhere south by the Gulf of Finland or lake region. (I showed my foreign friend around Helsinki and while it’s ok, I realized it’s nowhere near my favorite place.) 🌇Again, it depends on what you want to see and do. If you do go to Helsinki, be sure to take the small ferry to Suomenlinna. 🌊 Coastal area and the archipelago is the best part of Finland and what I missed when I lived in Central Europe for 7 years.

You should definitely experience Lapland! Depends ofc on the time of the year when you are coming to Finland - fall and winter time are the most beautiful in Lapland. Northern lights and all. I would say that Finland is not flat at all. The further up north you go, the greater the differences in altitude. I guess the guy on the video was just saying that even if the ”mountains” here are technically mountains, we do not call them that. We call them ”tunturi” or ”vaara”, not ”vuori” (=mountain). 🤔 I would visit Helsinki, Tampere and some place in northern Finland, maybe Rovaniemi or Ivalo. 😊

Kokkola, Vaasa ja Helsinki (Hm... Ehkä Turku?). I would go to those places and travel by car or bus and that way I would get to pass some bonusareas aswell.

All the people in Åland I've met prefers Swedish, but knows Finish. They all watched Swedish TV and it was a bit hard to find Finish newspapers/magazines in shops. A bit anecdotal, I've only spoken to a dozen or two of them. In general, capitals should be avoided, unless you're into museums, live music, getting drunk late at night, and such (speaking as a true and tested Stockholmer who grew up and lived there for 40 years). Think of it like, would you recomend someone from abroad to visit London when in Britain, or would you suggest, say, Oxford, Cardiff, York, or Ely?

Huh, what's wrong with visiting London? Helsinki has by far the most/best sights and architecture in Finland it's not even close. Turku demolished much of its beauty and Porvoo/Rauma are too small, you get bored there after 1 day. Tampere is nice if you like the old industrial style and it has many vista points overlooking the 2 lakes surrounding the city, but it still doesn't offer as much as Helsinki. And even then Helsinki is pretty boring compared to most of Europe. Most of the capital region is just suburbs with a small city center.

@@ellav5387 I liked Helsinki when I were there (3-4 times), I'm just saying that capitals in general are less worth visiting than many other cities/towns
@ellav53874 ай бұрын
@@matshjalmarsson3008 In most cases across the world but especially in Europe, the capital is the largest city as well as the main hub for culture, commerce, politics etc. This doesn't mean it's always the best place to visit, but I don't understand why capitals specifically would be "generally" less worth to visit in your opinion.
@matshjalmarsson30084 ай бұрын
@@ellav5387 Well, it's just my experience. But as I wrote, it depends on what you're after. And there are exceptions, while I preferred other cities than Madrid, London, Paris, and Budapest, I quite liked Beijing and Dublin.

Here is the route for you: Helsinki, Hämeenlinna, (Lappeenranta/Joensuu), Tampere, Vaasa, Oulu, Kuusamo, Sodankylä, Rovaniemi, Tornio. From there to Sweden and down the coast to Stockholm. (Denmark? Mälmö Helsingör, Helsinborg) Göteborg, Norway and Oslo. Spend time in Norway and take a ferry to Scotland. You can also visit Norway from northern Finland, because it is a different Norway than in the south.

Espoo, Lappeenranta and Oulu would be the cities best to visit if you’re not a fan of cold😮

Did you know that a man named Bo Jonsson Grip OWNED Finland (and parts of Sweden and Norway, and maybe more), around the last part of the 1300s. I wonder who he sold it to?

I once saw a programme on Swedish television) that claimed there's is only one municpality/township in the whole world where 100% of the inhabitants have Swedish as a maternal language - and this municipality is located in Finland (eastern mainland) I don't remember the name of the city/town. Is this correct/still valid? Cheers from Sweden 💖

I'm from the city of Lahti, and it's a nice city, but if you only choose 3 cities, TOP of the list should be Tampere don't skip Tampere for any reason. Second city maybe Helsinki only because it's the Capital. Skip Turku, trust me 😂 I don't have anything for the third, just wanted to say that don't skip Tampere😊

I recommend Turku, Tampere and Oulu or Rovaniemi for northern cities. Yes Helsinki is the capital city but in my opinion skip Helsinki. Go other major cities and U will get the same experience that Helsinki can offer but less prize with unique arcitechture and excellent difference style of cusines. How ever you are choosing warm welcome to Finland 😊
