"To be able to affect others, an artist has to be an explorer, and his work of art has to be a quest. If he has discovered everything, knows everything, and is just preaching or entertaining, he makes no effect. Only if he keeps searching, then the viewer, or listener, or reader fuses with him in his search." -Tolstoy’s diary, December 1900

I loved the book, especially this chapter. Thankfully, I didn’t know how the book ended, so it was an exciting read. Overall, the book dragged in parts, but often I enjoyed Tolstoy’s philosophical ramblings. Sad that I only found your channel after finishing the book. I look forward to reading many more novels alongside your channel! I love your insight ❤️

Tolstoy really held nothing back when it came to naming some of these characters 😅 This is a really great analysis of part seven. You hit on exactly why it became difficult for me to feel sorry for Anna (though I still did to a degree, it was more pity by the end). There were so many things she could have avoided, but continued to make decisions that she knew would cripple her sense. Although, there are were many factors at play, there could have been much more control. I was enjoying the book at this point, but I also enjoy books that make me suffer 😅😅

Me too! She made so many bad decisions, but don't we all do that sometimes? And then hours later we think of all the clever things we could've said or done. If she had the skills to deal with her problems she would've delt with them in a less dysfunctional way. But her introspection is reduced to generalizing and blaming others. Unfortunately therapy wasn't an option.

Fantastic discussion as always Sophia. I didn’t know about the death although I had a feeling there would be a tragic ending- to have it happen so soon before the end was so strange and made me wonder why this book has this title. So much frustration in these chapters but I was still so engaged. Off to watch your final thoughts next!

Imagine having a book titled Kostantin Levin instead! Doesn't have the same ring to it as Anna Karenina.

The last thoughts of Anna as she's on the tracks is pretty sad. Her character annoyed me a bit but I think she was realistic. It's sad to see how she ended, specially knowing that a lot of people who survive suicide attempts say that they regreted it as soon as they started the act, like Anna. But she did not live vocalize her last thoughts.

Lovely video with great analysis as always. Love how you express your thoughts and insights. Anna Karenina is one of my favourite books which I have read many times but your analysis has really helped me interpret it and consider it in a very different way. I have just started reading The House Of The Dead by Dostoyevsky.

Thanks for another engaging discussion of Anna Karenina. I did know of her death many years before I finally picked up the novel. I had imagined it would have been in the last part of the novel bearing her name, but apparently this is not the case. I am still on part 5, I read just 50 pages this month, distracted by other books and by booktube (there is something ironic about watching so many people talking about reading and then not having the time to read myself...).

Ok I know I shouldn't feel that bad for our opium addict but I was crying when she through her self under maybe it's my experiences with this but she saw she had no way societally out of her messed up situation, mind u she put herself in that position, and she couldn't even kill herself right lol had to wait for the second train, but it's so sad and idk what's gonna happen part 8 cause her kid don't have a mum 😭😭
