A while ago, I told my mother (who is 77) about your video of the Roman Gate in Trier. A few weeks later, she called me and was asking me if I had watched other videos that you have made, which I have. Last week, she called me and asked me if I watched your latest video where you talked about Mac Baren Vanilla pipe tobacco. She doesn't care about pipes or tobacco at all, but she has now watched every video you have posted and is regularly checking to see when you post a new video. I suspect she is one of many non pipe smoking fans that you have. I am a pipe smoker and I enjoy your videos a lot and I also appreciate that your work and care in making your videos has brought her so much enjoyment as well. Thank you for doing what you are doing!

very interesting history. particularly interesting to me. one of my ancestors of the surname Meyer came to the u.s. in the early 1840s. the family story is that he was some kind of royalty, a lesser prince or some such that stowed away on a ship to escape some legal issues. however my aunt has done a many years long in depth genealogy and ancestry research and had discovered that he was a criminal that was sent out of the country as a teenager for stealing and poaching. thanks for the video.

Hola Mark, fantastic, I am of course thrilled as an "amateur historian". The Haymaker of HU is of course an excellent pure Virginia, which I also appreciate very much. I am absolutely thrilled, of course, by the research you have included on the history of this poor young woman, which unfortunately probably paints a typical moral picture of the time. I am curious to see how her exciting story continues. The work you have done reminds me of the genealogical research my father and I did on our family, which took us through Europe and back to 1732. Unfortunately, the traces broke off there because the church records had been destroyed in a fire. We see us next. Best wishes from the island. Michael.

Very nice to see the incredible old buildings on the farm. Beautiful country. Great history of Anna Elizibeth and her journey to America. I know very little of my ancestors unfortunately. I have lived in Missouri my whole life. I live about 50 miles from the Meerschaum Pipe company manufacturing the corncob pipes here. I hear they are known around the world. I just placed my 1st order with them to support the only corncob pipe company left today. (Well, besides some Chinese Communist company's inferior product.) I will look for some Haymaker! Hope you are well!

Greetings Mark my friend! Very interesting project....I've been looking forward to this video! Exile has been a punishment within kingdoms, empires and states all through human history...as you well know! It can be one of the cruelist punishments, because it separated one from their families and companions.... forever usually. In the ancient world, the exile was the most pittied of all humans, completely cut off from all they've known and an existence often as some type of slave in a foeign land. Thanks for sharing this story...this is how Anna....or any of us are remembered. Take care, Corey

Hi Mark, It was really interesting and it made me think of the movie Scarface (with Al Pacino) where we "learn" that Castro in the 80's got rid of the worst criminals by sending them to America. To be continued... I think you're a good story teller and a podcast would be super cool :) (but we'd lose the pipe part sadly...) Hope you're doing well. Greetings from France.

This is a major revelation to a lot of people on this side of the ocean. I would wager and give high odds that maybe one out of 10000 Americans are aware that this policy was in place in Germany in the early 19th century. Fascinating stuff. It puts the whole "illegal immigration" issue that is being debated in the U.S. in a new perspective. So the trick for the potential immigrant was to commit enough of a crime to emigrate but not too severe as that may land you in a jail cell instead of Ellis Island. A great presentation, thanks much.

Hey Mark: When I first heard the name of that Dan tobac I thought, "wow they apparently named this stuff 'Haymaker' because it is so strong that you had better smoke it on a full stomach because otherwise it will punch you very hard". It has turned out to be one of my favorite Virginias, you are correct in that Dan really knows their Virginias, reminds me a bit of C and D Opening Night or Macbarens HH Pure Virginia. Keep puffin.
