Love this! I hate to admit but I’m someone that needs a list to get my day done. This year I needed to make some changes so I started writing “Things to Achieve Today ⭐️” instead of To-Do list and it’s helped reframed my mundane tasks. I’ll write “take back your space today” instead of “ clean house” and it’s true it’s helped me view those things as not so big and scary. Your content is always so helpful thank you for your hard work ❤

I like the idea of setting your goals to "what is something you on even your worst day could manage" because I know I often feel overwhelmed and that derails everything.

Thank you for taking this course and bite sizing it. I think self help books really work for a lot of people. But some of these absolutes they say can be really damaging for anyone who has mental health issues and disabilities. "If you're not improving everyday you're ZERO" is not true. But it sounds nice and dramatic for that productivity grind. Work you've done in the past will come back quickly once you start again. You're never starting from zero. Don't worry.

I was thinking about habits today and how I want to teach an English lesson that revolves around this topic, I want to give my student some encouragement to change her bad habits and I'll definitely take points from here! Crazy how obvious all of this sounds when you hear it but you rarely think about it on the daily

If you started at 100 and improved 1% each day 100×1.01^365.25 = 3787 which is around 37.87 times better by the end of the year. So the maths does check out. If you start at 100 and become 1% worse everyday for a year then 100×(1−0.01)^365.25 which will result in you being around 2.54 by the last day. So kinda almost zero.
@ratsalad178 Жыл бұрын

This idea drives me nuts. It's not like many of our habits compound. If you eat 100 calories less than you burn, you don't get to take that deficit and even carry it to the next day, much less use it to eat even fewer calories. Or even if you have a bad day where you watch youTube videos all day. You are not forced to watch even more becuase of yesterday's decisions. The math is correct; the analogy is ok; but the inference is asinine.

somebody please tell me what my problem is: i avoid doing anything useful and i waste my time. even in entertainment, i don't chase or do things that will be fun but i do the ones that require least effort even if it's unbearably boring. let's say i heard about a movie that i'd like i can never open the app and turn the movie on. even if i put it in a watch later list i chose to procrastinate it to infinity. my dreams are pretty reachable but i don't chase them. i have the time but feel a huge resistance and i feel like im being strangled so i just quit whatever it is. this applies to hobbies too, i can't stand doing something that i loved doing for hours. i also lack any motivation, ambition, excitement, hope. yes i am suffering from depression but there has to be a solution. my environment is depressing me too but my goal and dream is to change the environment so that's not gonna get better by itself. also sometimes i force myself to try something or do something beneficial. and sometimes it's not hard but i still quit doing that. is this self sabotage? do i think i dont deserve anything good? or is this falling into bad habits (of wasting my time)? is it just major depression? or is it someting else?

ive been in the same place as you for a couple years and it turns out I was/am heavily dysregulated and constantly in a 'freeze' state - avoidance and disengagement became my default mode of operation wherever I felt distress or discomfort, which is all the time if you suppress all your emotions all the time. look up nervous system dysregulation, flight/fight/freeze states and see if it resonates with you

Doom scrolling or phone addiction is a really common habit people want to break (myself included!!). I'm trying to think of how you'd make it invisible, unattractive and difficult...apart from hiding my phone I can't think of much else.
@7head7metal7 Жыл бұрын
I was wasting too much time on Reddit, so I had to make it difficult: I uninstalled the app and set up a timer for the website. Without the app, the experience is already less fun, and the time kicks me out if I still spend too much time. It worked so well that I set the timer down to zero, and only disable it temporarily if I actually need to look something up. Same with other apps: uninstalled them, so logging on manually in the browser each time is too annoying for a quick waste of time.
@MomoMensch Жыл бұрын
you could hide the apps you are using. most phones have the option of putting them in a folder! I think it is also helpful to substitute it with another habit. something that satisfies you, is not a lot of effort and maybe you can even identify with it.. like reading or knitting or maybe sudoku :D i don't know whats fun for you :D but with knitting and sudoku or crossword puzzles you see progress and it is easy to stop once you get an idea what to do next :)

TBH the "get 1% better every day" thing right at the beginning is what made me put the book down and lose excitement about it. It's a preposterous notion. Getting 1% better each day is absolutely possible in the beginning-to-middle phases of something, but there comes a point where you simply peak. You CAN'T do the thing any better than you're doing it at some point. We don't have infinite capacity to improve in a given area. This shouldn't be confused with the adage that "There's always room for improvement." There IS always room for improvement. No one is perfect at anything. But people can't be perfect. So eventually they're going to top out on what they can do -- and there'll still be room for improvement (that they can't make).

Yep, for us habit building can be a lot harder, but the same principles still apply. I found Tiny Habits from BJ Fogg more helpful than Atomic Habits personally since it focuses more on the mindset side too, which is important when we're more likely to have misses and mess-ups that we need to be kind to ourselves about.
