IMO (as a Gen x) I love Gen Z ! Most, if not all the Gen Zs I’ve met are like a breath of fresh air, think outside the box , and are just amazing. Every Gen has their ‘bad apples’. I believe you can be original and have your individual personality , style etc, and still have class.

My grandmother was poor as a church mouse but she had more class than anyone. She scrubbed her doorstep everyday until it shone because she was proud and she would not leave the house unless she was dressed in her best clothes - even though those best clothes were hand-me-downs. She didn’t have much but what she did have she took pride in. At Christmas, our presents would always be homemade but she was so talented at knitting, sewing and cooking that whatever she gave us was always unique, beautiful or delicious. I was a teacher. My first year I tried to teach politeness in class and discipline rude behaviour only to be met with abusive rude parents who sometimes swore at me in front of the class. I have left that career. This is a real social problem that has been going on since before social media. I do agree that social media is making it worse.

I’m so sorry teaching politeness had that outcome with your class. I can see how that would likely be the response from parents today. I’m very thankful that my daughter’s kindergarten teacher taught respect to the class, granted we had a very good class of students and intentional parents so it was easy, but she taught these little 5-6 year olds to say “I respectfully disagree” when they had a disagreement with a classmate 🥲 so thankful my daughter got to experience her as a teacher and I learned a little along the way too!

At 24, I feel isolated from my own generation. I am considered “strange” or a “try hard” and “unapproachable” for wanting to look decent when I leave my home. Making friends is very difficult when my age bracket does not dress the same as me and is immersed in topics trending only on social media. To make it worse, it makes me ashamed at times to say I am an American because nowadays when people think of my country they think about the kinds of people shown in the side clips at the beginning of this video. It also doesn’t help that creators go viral for displaying this kind of behavior on the internet.

It’s not about consequences. Why should anyone care if you like them? In the US especially we are taught that it’s up to you to make it on your own. Only rely on yourself. It’s capitalism and you need to figure it all out. With that mentality no one needs anyone to like them. It’s just creating a society where no cares about others or their opinions. I'm a French living in Spain and let's put it this way: here the emphasis on good manners is not very strong 😞 my daughter is 4 and already knows how to say thank you (I usually have to remind it to her when someone gives her something in a store). I try my best to make sure she says goodbye. I am pretty sure almost none of her classmates do that. Even older children like yours barely know how to say thank you. It's honestly appalling 😮

Thank your bus driver, say hello and goodbye to shop clerks and drivers, etc. It was uncomfortable for me at first, because of my French ability, but after a year I was fine and was really shocked when I returned to America that we really don’t do that. I could see why you might be having a hard time in another country. Class and politeness is much more expected in France than anywhere else I’ve been.

I adore France. Even in Paris where things are very fast paced, manners are still VERY much a prevalent part of the everyday. To the OP of this comment, I applaud your teaching your son manners and etiquette. He will be less uncomfortable in most all situations because he knows how to handle himself. @@yaeltuttebel I used to be a Supervisor. Most people will do as you ask, as long as it is in their job description. They understand they can't say "No" to doing the job they agreed to do when hired. The issue is with people I call "Boundary Pushers" who would rather do anything than their job eg stand around chatting for hours. They are the minority, say 5-10%, but you need to spot them and learn how to deal with them. You need to have a chat with them, be firm and have clear boundaries. They won't like it, you may get called all sorts of names, I was and replied "I am just doing my job" - should have added, "You need to do yours" They may go away and reflect on it, and improve, but usually they don't and will leave. They often like to see themselves as chilled, laid back and free spirits or rebels. That is great, and there is a place for peole like that in the world, but in a business, stuff needs to get done and it is unfair to expect the other team mates to pick up their slack which leads to resentment.

Also, something that Europeans are more keen on, is the difference between public and private persona. Americans tend to blur the difference. However, I still want people including myself to have the option to wear decent jeans, t-shirts (in warm weather) and other casual comfortable clothes based on my own personal tastes in places where others including women are dressed similarly. This includes stores, public transit, sporting events, amusement parks, recreational places or just going outside. I understand the need to dress more modestly in finer places where others are dressed the same. However, I don’t want anything forced upon us like a dictatorship that is restrictive and oppressive. You are only seeing a certain population. There are plenty of people who obey the law and behave in a cultured manner. As for faith and fear, I don't want to live in fear or have someone's faith forced on me. I have a cousin who is a social worker, and all she sees all day is a certain segment of the population, and that's how she thinks "everyone" is. I am always trying to get her to see goodness and beauty in things outside of what she sees every day. I was once a police officer and fell into the same trap. I only saw the worst of the worst every day and would have to remind myself every now and then that I was seeing a small percentage of society because that's all I was exposed to.

I’m a baby boomer/senior citizen. We grew up very poor and didn’t have the best of everything nor a robust pantry. But my parents, neither of whom went beyond 8th grade, could read and write well and were always kind and polite, as were our relatives and most people in our poor neighborhood. So, we had “class” with very little. Yet today, many of the rich and famous are crude and lewd. Anna, you did a great service with this video. You’ve captured the issue that too many are afraid to tackle for fear of being told they’re just “shaming” people. No, we’re not! I think generations earlier like Millennials are more prone to narcicism. Boomers do not even know what narcicism is, they lack awareness. They developed it -- normalized it -- imprinted in their genetics -- and the strain went on, raising narcicists as well. Narcicism is from trauma, neglect, etc.. a lot of bad thinzzzzzzz. I remember when I was 19 I used to work at this very posh and expensive restaurant and bar, where wealthy and very wealthy people would dine. I remember being so shocked, to see how all these people behaved and carried on, and they were what we classify as new money. It was the old money that were just a pleasure to deal with, because they were so lovely, kind and spoke to myself (waitress) with respect, and I could spot them a mile away from the way they dressed and carried themselves. However, I'd like to add that for some of us, isolation is not necessarily due to social media but due to the lack of quality people available in our surroundings. I have personally chosen to walk away from several friends and acquaintances because I have changed. Therefore, my values and what I expect from life and others no longer align with who they are. I find that as people elevate their intrinsic value, the pool of qualified individuals to have in one's social circle shrinks considerably.

Yep. People who share my values and personality type are usually very busy and at stage in their lives when their family and business/ career take so much of their time that I really cannot blame them for wanting to have the free time to just be on their own. I'm not one to demand anything of anyone,but I miss having more social contact, long conversations about different topics, learning things from people that are passionate about them but I get my "social fix" from work. I perhaps should seek out people more, but I'm afraid of rejection or sounding pushy and crass.

If people criticize us, accept the criticism, don’t respond, go on living your beautiful life. Being considerate of other peoples feelings, is 90% of the battle. I've met poor people who had a lot of class. One of my very best friends is dying of A.L.S. They never had a lot of money, but her family had the most magical holidays. Her children grew up with education, art and a lot of kindness and charity towards others. She had to go into the hospital, and then a rehabilitation center for a little while. All of the staff was sad to see her go, because she has such a light in her eyes, and a love for other human beings.

You are onto something. I am from Generation Z (23y) and every single time I go outside, without fail, I dress like it’s my Sunday best. I did it originally for me, because when I look good I feel good, but I’ve noticed that I get a looot more looks in public now. I raised my three sons with formality early so as toddlers they could introduce themselves and address adults with easy Sir and Ma’am. Holding doors, rising when an elder comes in the room, everything. Oh, people rode us about our approach but after the were 9 years old I never had to worry about how they would behave socially. It is also worth saying that young people spend time influenced by more than their parents. The (horrifying) education system, entertainment industry that is vulgarity set to music. Amen! Anna, I really appreciate you speaking up about these things, and you in turn have inspired me to be brave and take a stand on matters from class and behaviour to dress codes. I was born in 2000, so sadly I am Gen Z. I agree with everything said here. I've been saying for awhile that human decency is becoming a thing of the past and it's horrific seeing such atrocious behaviour being normalised and even glorified these days. Look at politicians, look at celebrities, look at social media. Look at people in public! I used to complain about how awful the 2010s were, and now I want those years back. I used to be horrified by swearing in public, especially f bombs. Now, it's all too normal to me. I'm not a saint, but when in public, I try really hard to be polite, say my pleases and thank yous and not use bad language. I know younger generations like to say that older generations were rude to people who worked in public but honestly, I see more rude young people than older people and this is coming from someone who has worked in customer service for over 5 years and has dealt with rudeness from people of all ages. I also agree that social media has a huge influence on this, especially on younger people who are more impressionable. I also totally agree that the current generation gets bent out shape way too easily, to put it nicely. One comedian group I love did this really funny skit where they pretended to be Gen Z people who were confused by old devices. And the comments were full of people complaining about how they didn't like Gen Z being made fun of (but boomer jokes were OK). Mind you, these comedians were not in any way being cruel or degrading towards people of that generation. I once had a conversation with someone around my age where I brought up how much it bothered me that people are so rude, aggressive and horrible to each other. And their response was basically, "well, being nice and polite makes the problem worse because they'll just pretend to be sincere so people have a right to be angry nowadays." I strongly disagree. You can acknowledge your feelings and defend something you believe in passionately without being rude or violent about it. Someone once told me that I can't change the world. But I can be the good change in the world. And that's what I try to be. It's not easy in world that views kindness as weak and class as selfish. All I hope is that I can continue to improve, and I hope I can inspire other people, especially younger ones, to do the same.

They call me a 'snob', 'uptight', 'old fashioned', 'lame', 'weird', 'judgmental' etc. there was literally the most benign post from this poor guy, where THOUSANDS of people bullied, and abused him, just for sharing an outfit that he thought looked nice, and why we shouldn't all dress like complete slobs. I have also experienced a bunch of grown ignoramuses on my last job cursing as if they had no scruples whatsoever. These were so-called educated people in a professional environment. I remember one time the big boss got wind of several employees standing near the entryway of the office engrossed in a epithet-filled conversation. During a meeting, she addressed the problem. Immediately afterward, those same ignoramuses went right back out and began their curse-laden conversation again. I felt sickened by their behavior; they were told to stop but chose to continue despite being warned about it. This happened at a hospice company if you can believe that. Hospice is supposed to provide people with compassionate, dignified care during their last days of life. But this is what went on behind the scenes.

Last year we went to Italy with my husband. As we arrived to the Budapest airport (we were dressed pretty, not sloppy, and we just overall behaved nicely, calm and happy as we use to do) a hungarian woman who worked on the ground floor as an assistant just came to us and immediatelly adressed us in english (I have heard her earlier figuring out who might be foreign and who might be hungarian, so she addressed them accordingly). We of course responded in english and she helped us with our luggage, with our check in, showing the place around quickly and told us to let her know if we will need any more help. What a treatment! I have never had this treatment before, when I dressed like a plain jane. Putting an effort in your appearance doesn't cost you too much money. What we were wearing costed less than 50 euro in total but still made a well put together impression. Your behavior can be developed from zero money, just a bit of awareness and emphaty is needed. And this is not about people pleasing at all, just like Anna said. In our case for example it is just very pleasant for other people to be around us, but we also have strong boundaries what makes the wrong type of people to stay away from us. And you don't have to be rude. We got some people in our community who were quite disrespectfull to us. We just didn't go out with them anymore and didn't try to call them etc. You don't allways have to be agreasive or defensive. Just be honest, and choose the right tool for each situation. If you are honest with yourself, you will admit that most of the upsetting situations require no agreasive response to solve. Most of the time ignorance, steping away, assertive communication, education and consistency in your behavior is the key to solve the conflict. Don't be a fool who stucks in a silly argument or fight just to have the last word. Simply saying "we will never agree on this one, I am closing the discussion right now from my side" and leave is my ultimate make people to stop the drama etc technique. The differences in manners and patience levels between various countries is astonishing. When you step on an American persons foot (by accident) they will scream at you but if you step on a British or Canadian persons foot they will even apologize for getting in your way! Interesting!

I agree with most of what you say. However, I do believe that it is possible to stay at home forever, and still have class. I am focused on myself, I've never been a fan of socialization, and the pandemic for me was the best thing since I get to stay home everyday. I may not be happy to see people, but that doesn't mean I don't have manners. It baffles me how people can just live like nothing else matters just because they get to stay home. We can be hermits and still have class ❤

Thank you for this video Ana! When I was a teen my parents signed me up for a class with a lady who taught girls how to carry themselves as ladies, how to seat, walk, dress. This was in the 80s in a small country in South America. I learned so much with her, and followed her advice. These days there are a lot more resources available for everyone to learn different things for free, like your channel. How we carry ourselves is a form of communication and people forget, or maybe on purpose, that they can be offensive. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and passion.

Proper introductions have gone by the wayside. Introductions are a sign of respect and acknowledging each other. I work in a small-staffed (about 6) private-access work location. One day at work a woman sat down at a work table with me. After a few minutes I asked who she was, and she said she was a new hire (and we introduced each other). This meant, though, that my manager hadn't told me that we'd hired someone new and hadn't thought enough to introduce us to the new person (who had spent 3 or 4 days already hired and being trained at headquarters). Same company, but at a larger-staffed location, I had a coworker ask me if I was looking forward to so-and-so being my manager of the new dept. tomorrow. I was shocked. Apparently everyone around me had been told for about a week about the new manager and start date of a new department (small, about 4 employees). The new manager (hired from within) never bothered to tell me, one of her new staff, yet told everyone else. These 'oversights' speak volumes of the lack of respect for the current employees, treating them like metal cogs in a machine instead of humans with some value in the company.

Totally agree, Anna. Thank you for covering so many points. I used to work at luxury hospitality and I was so impressed how some of the wealthiest guests looked so down to earth and were so polite and humble , so "low key" people. They were the most respectful and giving people, and some others came around yelling and demanding with no please and thank you... So snob and rude to waiters or clerks. That´s when I learned that you cannot buy manners, education, or class with money. Times change, but values stay forever.

I definitely agree I think having social graces, chivalry or even bed side manner is very important because it fosters trust with people around you, you feel more comfortable around people who behave appropriately, and it promotes a well respected society

The degeneration of society is extremely depressing. My daughters attend an elite private school and even there the behaviour of many of the children is shocking. Too many children are left with nannies who are attending to the child’s practical needs but have no control over their behaviour . They have no boundaries. Many families are failing in this respect. New-money children are spoiled, greedy and disrespectful (not all of course). Teachers cannot cope and half the time the parents are even worse. Children who are from more “decent” homes where they are learning manners etc struggle when out in the real world as life has become dog eat dog. Teaching good manners is not serving them well unfortunately as they get walked all over by shameless, bullies.
