When I first heard the voice of Anne Lenner, singing with Carroll Gibbons. and the Savoy Orpheans, it was so good that I couldn't stop listening to it. That was 15 years ago. The Style, and perfect delivery of this lady is timeless; the music is absolutely wonderful. There is nothing in present time that compares. Thanks for sharing, i'd love ton see some live footage of Anne Lenner performing with Carroll Gibbons and the band. I have all the CDs

Those of us born after this era are lucky to have KZbin! A real lady and on retiring from singing, Anne became a civil servant.

Thank you for posting. Unfortunately I was born too late to listen to Anne in person at the Savoy. Her diction was perfect, unlike the so-called screaming stars of today.

I had an Uncle His name was Len Franks in C.G's band when they played at the Savoy Hotel Anne Lenner was singing with the band I think, Frenchy Sartell played trumpet. I leep searching through hoping to find an photo with Him in it, so far no luck, But wasn't it all lovely and Tuneful.

Very nice thing to say about British dance bands, 1casey234 - and I'm an Aussie! I agree with you - they were something special - what memories even though a bit before my time they are evergreens.

Good stuff; seems the horrors of WW2 wiped the slate clean on this fantastic music as everyone wanted to look forward after it was all over

Listening to this, I can almost feel the warmth of a distant summer day. If you like this, now go to "Dreaming" by Al Bowlly- same year, same music, but a completely different lyric, though just as moving as Anne Lenners version. Which do you prefer? I cant decide

Name of this tune, please? Love Anne Lenner always.

I see it is "One Lovely Yesterday." Found it elsewhere.

"Time Was" is the name. Dear old Hubert Gregg used it as the theme tune for his Monday evening show on radio 2. The tune also had an alternate lyric, and was called "Dreaming". Al Bowlly made a lovely recording of this, and it's here on KZbin as well.

Unfortunately I have not, yet. You may know already that Judy Shirley (born Florence Green) was one of the sisters of Anne Lenner (born Violet Green) of Leicester, UK.

What's it called please? And who was the guy who used it for years as his BBC inro music? Thanks.

The song is called 'Time Was' and it was Hubert Gregg who used the song for his radio intro.

To me, Anne Lenner was to band music what Al Bowlly was to Ray Noble and Lew Stone. The female equivalent of Al Bowlly. To be compared to him is the greatest compliment we can give because he was simply incomparable.

Are there any videos available that show Anne Lenner singing? Plenty of still photos around but no video/films, surprising considering how famous she was at the time.

This is just a beautiful piece all around. Gibbons was a genius with arrangements, apart from being a virtuoso at the piano. And the voice....oh, the voice. This piece and Gibbons others from this era, with Lenner singing, compare very favorably to the best that was coming from the states in this era...1938-41 or so. It's a shame that Gib, producing records in England, didn't get more exposure then.
