I love the thick creams made with luscious oils. They help my dry hands and cuticles so much. I make cold process soap and tonight I made my first Aromatherapy Shower Fizzies from Soap Queen. I used a sample fragrance I got from Brambleberry, Bergamot Black Tea and after showing with one of the fizzies I started looking for a lotion/cream recipe to put it in! The stuff is intoxicating! I want soap scented with it too! I believe all the wonderful extracts and oils in this recipe will do the Bergamot Black Tea justice!

Oh my god you literally made the perfect body cream for me. Like literally everything on there, worked for me and I always didn’t know how to put like honey into my body creams that I would make cause I thought of actually using honey and that isn’t ideal so to have someone else actually find the alternatives. Thank you a million times!

@shayelea

Adding any kind of milk to a lotion or cream is going to make it nearly impossible to preserve, especially if the milk is unpasteurized. If you want to add milk, you’re better off using a cosmetic-grade powder; I’ve most often seen powdered goat’s milk sold for this purpose.
@keekeejenkins6162
@keekeejenkins6162 2 жыл бұрын
Its's not "impossible to preserve" I would suggest subbing out only 10% of the water weight with milk and for sure use a water based preservative. If it's for personal use leave it in the fridge.

Usually creams separate because you don’t have a high enough concentration of emulsifying waxes. Check your recipe that you’re using the right amount of everything, and definitely get a scale if you are measuring by volume instead of weight. As for ice baths, sometimes if you are making something that is mostly oils with a mix of hard and soft oils, if they cool too slowly, the hard oils (like cocoa butter) can remind together and make your cream feel grainy. Cooling it quickly can help with this. I do it for balms, but I don’t feel the need to do it with lotions usually.

Moon Flower That’s not the oatmeal’s fault, it’s the water. I make a simpler version of this that’s more of a body butter-no water and no beeswax, and a lot more oatmeal. Great for eczema. The next time I make it, I’m adding herb infused oil.

@____Ann____
@____Ann____ 5 жыл бұрын
Maybe glycerine but I wouldn't put more than 2 or 3%, not 5%. Glycerine is sticky. Do you have Polyquaternium 7 or panthenol or sodium lactate? In that case you could use 2% of glycerine, 2% of panthenol and 1% sodium lactate for example. Somebody else mentioned allantoin, that is a great ingredient too. Anyway I would use the rate of 5% for my replacement because otherwise you will need to reformulate everything. Within that 5% you'll need to take care of maximums. For example, technically you could use 5% of glycerine (and for a feet product that would be OK) but for hands 2 or 3% is enough. Generally 2% is common for panthenol. So I wouldn't replace the 5% of honeyquat by 5% of panthenol.

Actually, while you can drink distilled water, doing so can make you very sick after some time because it’s been stripped of important minerals and electrolytes your body expects when drinking water. So while it’ll work in a pinch, it’s not very good for you and can even kill you if you replace it in your normal diet over time. My dad works in hazmat and warned me against this years ago.

I had to laugh when she smelled the honeyquat…not surprised they didn’t show her reaction. Most honeyquat smells terrible! It doesn’t usually smell like honey; quaternary ingredients of any kind usually smell a little fishy or sour. Maybe Bramble Berry’s doesn’t smell as bad, but if you buy some honeyquat and it smells awful, don’t worry! It’s not spoiled! The smell won’t come through in the finished product if you’re using a fragrance oil. A quaternary ingredient is one that has had its chemical composition altered to become cationic - that is, positively charged. Since our skin and hair is negatively charged, cationic ingredients make the product feel extra slippery and then adhere better to our skin for more protection against trans-epidermal water loss. So that’s why you’d chose to use honeyquat instead of plain honey. Both are humectants, but only honeyquat is cationic.

Hello.. I've tried making lotions with colloidal oatmeal. Using optiphen and all 3 times it smells bad after 2 weeks. I don't understand because I can make Aloe with aloe pulp juice & coconut milk with honey & it's amazing that the others don't spoil. It'll be months and the lotions are perfect. Except for anything that has collodial oatmeal. I would love to make some but I've wasted so much even with small batches. I take the same precautions like you state . Optiphen at a low temperature etc. Can you explain why this may be happening? I'd love to know your take on it. Love your products and I buy many oils for my business
@KateLB1027
@KateLB1027 5 жыл бұрын
Letisia Williams hi! I am a microbiologist and work in a clinical laboratory, so I have some theories as to why the oatmeal needs some optiphen. I am a casual soap crafter but very new to it, however! Aloe, coconut milk, and honey all have their own independent antimicrobial properties when stored properly. They can be stored for certain periods without chemical buffering (especially for personal and not commercial use). Oatmeal, a grain product, tends to have lots of fungal elements and bacteria that hitchhike from the environment to your house even when ground and processed. The #’s are usually low enough for consumption when cooked and stored properly or eaten in a timely manner. Once you add water, aka a crucial ingredient for almost all life, those organisms start to have fun. Their fun = the deterioration of your product. This may be why you either have to use a product with the oatmeal directly from your fridge for only about 1 week instead of storing it at RT in your bathroom. I have yet to experiment with optiphen, though, but plan to make some lotions and facial sprays with it in the future 👌🏼

@@KateLB1027 Hi Kate! I'm currently making body cream with aloe vera, infused oils in dried lavender, calendula & chamomile. I'm not using any powder ingredients. I use phenoxyethanol 1,5% as preservatives and the cream goes bad really quickly.. like 1 week or sometimes less than a week. Does this had to do with my infused oils?
@letisiaw75
@letisiaw75 5 жыл бұрын
Hello Kate... that was very helpful. I no longer make my lotions with oatmeal. I only use all aloe or coconut milk &honey. I see that the optiphen really preserves it well. The shelf life is at least 3 months even a little more. AWESOME response, It makes perfect sense . Thank you for sharing & good luck with your crafting. I love soap making and many other bath & body products. Enjoy

Jessica Hartono hi! I haven’t used essential oils in any of my soaps or lotions yet. I have stayed clear of those for now only because I’m so new to using them other than in my diffusers at home! 😆 Are the lotions going bad (as in smell rancid) or are they simply discoloring? Maybe the essential oils are breaking down and separating more quickly instead of staying a homogenized mixture. Just thoughts! The EO could also accelerate the breakdown of your chemical preservative. There might be some blog posts, videos, or literature online from some biochemists or cosmetic chemists that explain the science behind it. I hope that helps! I’m sorry that it’s ruining your lotions. They do sound wonderful, though 😌

I’ve noticed this same thing occurring with clay as well. I’m not sure where you are getting your oatmeal from. I took actual oats and ground them in a coffee grinder... But after buying medical grade colloidal oatmeal, the problem stopped persisting. Perhaps that could be the issue? Now I use oatmeal extract anyways, which I feel is much easier to deal with.

I have been making creams, lotions and much more for decades and I've never needed emulsifiers, preservatives, artificial fragrances, or commercial ingredients. Using all of those artificial, manmade, chemical ingredients in one's homemade skin products is rather defeating the point of making homemade skin products. Once you'd added in all that trash you've simply replicated what you could buy at the shops. We make at home because we care about what we put on our skin, for what we put on our skin we put in our bodies. It is misleading and false to say that emulsifier is necessary, it isn't. If you've made mayonnaise you know this. Oil and water do not want to mix, but you can make them with friction and timing. Humans created a myriad of wonderfully natural, innovative, and amazing products long before petrochemicals came on the market. We've lost that vital connection to nature and we need to promote its return, and our freedom within it, not more reliance on consumerism.
