I wouldn't say it is inferior to Perlman's at all. It is just different. More sentimental and free. And she plays it with more sound nuances, just like she does everything. Beautiful.

Well, you might not say that, but I certainly will :) I believe Perlman's version is superior in all ways.

Fortunately this is art and everyone has his/her taste/ preferences. I am glad you like Perlman's, I like it too, as I like Mutter's. But "Superior" or "inferior" to me are terms I'd rather use for sport competitions, not music.

That 4th finger half step shift down no vibrato from F to E at 2:34 is probably one of the cleanest and purest notes I’ve ever heard. No manipulation just simply a bow drawing out the note

Of course she is one of the top violinists. Somehow on this work Perlman's version remains one of the best above all due, to my mind, to his straight forward delivery of the work. Lets not forget that Perlman was involved with this work since its inception and that may have helped

Perlman’s version is simply better because this version is over flourished. The beauty of the song and the music is in its simplicity. Williams mentioned it’s reflective of the musical equivalent of those working class jews playing this music in the ghettos. In my view and because of its simplicity, it is stripped back from all of the showy frivolities and is a screeching heart wrenching sound from a simple man whose violin sings his soul. This is where she went wrong with playing this piece and where Perlman nails it so graciously.

Once you've heard Perlman's version, it's hard to prefer any other. I'd definitely like to hear Hilary Hahn do it because I consider her the greatest violinist of all time, but sometimes certain pieces are tailored for certain violinists, and no one can do them better.

Being a great fan of Mutter I think she missed the spirit of the piece. Hers is an intimate praying-like reflection that is trying to be sad but is lacking the intensity of the universal pain and tragedy and thus all the tension falls apart. I understand where she comes from, being very personal and refined but it doesn't work here. In this piece Perlman is hard to bit. He has the perfect balance between sadness and pain, between the intimate individual and the epic universal tragedy.

For my tuppence I would say that Perlman's original version is the better of the two. Of course this is subjective but his reading is more tender and humble. He also plays it more simply with less rubato which for me ASM overdoes. The orchestra has a hard time of it following her as she trades emotion for rhythmic integrity. They both, of course are marvellous violinists and I've played in orchestras with both. Live, Itzhak Perlman towers above Anne-Sophie Mutter. A churlish thing to say when the later is so gifted a violinist herself.
@zeniktorres4320
@zeniktorres4320 4 жыл бұрын
Subjective definitely.... Maybe I prefer Anne-Sophie Mutter approach here, over the one I heard from Perlman but even that is splitting hairs, so really I prefer both. If I had the gift of talent like they have, I would play it differently each time depending how I feel.

Morigi5 are you serious?! Just because, it‘s different from what you know, doesn‘t mean it‘s bad, okay? And how dare you to call her unmusical? Have you listenend to her recording of the Beethoven, Mendelssohn or Brahms Concerto? She is an wonderful Violinist, just has a very different style than dear Mr. Perlman, neither better or worse. It‘ a matter of taste. But if you don‘t like it, please don‘t say it‘s bad, that‘s just not true.

Leen Jean Leen Jean Am I serious? You bet I am. How dare I? Hah... because I can and I do. As it happens, I met Frau Mutter in person at her concerts in multiple venues and I own many of her classical recordings. She plays Mozart beautifully and Beethoven, less so Sibelius, for example. All this is a matter of personal taste. To each his own.
