It's about the weirdness of families and religion. Annie's mom smoking at the dinner table and downing double scotch rocks while complaining about the town drunk. The Annie just saying yeah, uh huh to everything. She likes being there but can't communicate at all. Seeing her family says a lot about who she is. Then of course, Christopher Walken nodding as he quietly eats his ham.... The the whole scene takes two and a half minutes yet says SO MUCH.

According to the internet: "The key to understanding this exchange is that ham (pork) and lobster (shellfish) are extremely non-Kosher foods. They're strictly forbidden ("treif") for Orthodox Jews or those simply keeping Kosher (which Alvy's Jewish family probably does). So when Annie's family praises grammy's ham, Alvy, who heard she hates Jews, is quick to chime in, casually calling it 'dynamite' as if he's a ham connoisseur. When nobody falls for that, Alvy then latches onto Annie's mom's question about seeing a psychiatrist to joke about his lobster addiction1, implying he's so into lobster that his shrink only now managed to wean him off wearing a lobster bib2. This joke bombs too, and now both mom and grammy are visibly annoyed by his obvious attempts to blend into their gentile Easter dinner." general source: Woody on Rye: Jewishness in the Films and Plays of Woody Allen - edited by Vincent Brook, Marat Grinberg

@sandrashevey82525 жыл бұрын
@Heidi Yodel Just the opposite Heidi...I think Allen reprsents the antiSemite view of Jewry. So in a way does Mel Brooks. This is why they are allowed to persevere. Most decent Jews were and are Blacklisted and/or expunged (accidents?!) Some are victims of big time SMEAR campaigns. Weinstein, Epstein..even I have got my unfair share of infamy. Take a look at `Shadow World`. A good look to what extent the Christian still hates the Jew and ratiionalizes, legalizes it. When Prince William made that infamous speech assuring Arabs `We will never desert you` it was after Prince Andrew had just signed a billion pound deal between the UK and I think the Saudis. More visibile Jewry...not just self-justifying antiSemite percepitons and incarnations.
