He tells the Associated Press, “When I saw it, I was not crazy about it. To this day, I have memories of it as being disappointing to me. I’m not saying it wasn’t beautifully filmed - it was (cinematographer) Gordon Willis, shot in black in white - and the people were good. But the writing was too preachy, too self-righteous. That’s one of the reasons I thought (2001 film) Match Point was a good film, because it wasn’t preachy or self-righteous. It just was what it was.”

There aren't many people who have made as many BAD films as Allen. He is, basically, a joke writer. His best films (e.g. Annie Hall) are strings of one-liners. @@ellenrosenblatt5463 He is also one of the greatests. But Paul McCartney is a perfect songwriter both in melodical and lyrical terms, while Bob Dylan focuses more on his poetry. Also, we must remember that Bob Dylan's albums almost always have some filler songs (except for The Freewheelin Bob Dylan, Blonde on Blonde, John Wesley Harding, Slow Train Coming and Saved; in my opinion), and the Beatles albums have none. McCartney's solo albums are, although not always perfect, always very even.

I distinctly remember watching this. It was truly a surprise (and a well kept secret) to have him appear. Keep in mind, this man had already won a few Oscars but never once attended the ceremony to pick them up. He notoriously detests Los Angeles and was reportedly already back in New York that very evening (on the plane before the Oscars concluded). I don’t think he had attended the Academy Awards before and he has not attended them since. A remarkably humble speech, at a time when the nation was still numb.

For those of you that don't know, this was the first time EVER that Woody appeared at the academy awards. He was never there previously to accept his four oscars he has won. He said he didn't go because he didn't want anyone judging if he is good or not.

garry shandling & marc maron reminded me of this on wtf...this moment froze time...i was in a brownstone in park slope, brooklyn, with my band getting equipment for a gig at the old knitting factory in tribeca...none of us even watched television back then, but the academy awards just happened to be on...the second whoopi goldberg said: woody allen, my drummer dropped a ride cymbal on her foot & i dropped my guitar & started to feel like i was having a panic attack...nyc & the whole universe was pure chaos at that point...then woody did standup & killed as if he never missed a beat.

i watched it several times. I think Woody's reading his own words from a teleprompter and that he purposefully had that script because he did not want to cry on TV. Also, when he speeds up a bit, it's to avoid doing so.

I have to say that when I was a little kid I first saw TAKE THE MONEY AND RUN and two things hit me. First was the beautiful JANET MARGOLIN and 2nd was the joke where Woody's character, VIRGIL, was 'making a meager living by selling meagers', at which point there he was, Virgil, selling gift wrapped boxes of meagers on the street. I turned around to my parents and asked them what meagers were. I believe they may still be laughing today, at their poor, innocent boy's question. It was a golden moment seeing my parents laughing non-stop.

The worst ( if any) of Woody Allen movies is way better than any of the Oscar is rewarding lately, as being the "best" . All have a message, great dialogue and cinematography I remember in Allen's 2016 "Café Society" movie the main character visiting Hollywood remarks as opposed to NY, there is no garbage on the streets and he gets the answer "because they put all on the screen"...

Woody Allen is the greatest American filmmaker of the last 50 years...Fans of Scorsese, Kubrick, Spielberg, Coppola, De Palma, Tarantino, Paul Thomas Anderson, Peckinpah, Malick, Spike Lee, Oliver Stone, Coen Brothers, Friedkin, Cameron , I'm sure would all like to argue their case..But none have been as consistent or have continued to make intensely personal films and stay totally true to their own vision as Woody has..just putting it out there folks
