It seems most people are of a different opinion than me regarding the meaning of this song. To me, it’s about unrequited love from the viewpoint of the one who has fallen out of love (the other person in the relationship is still in love). It seems like everyone thinks it’s simply a break-up song, or a divorce song, but to me, it’s not that simple. After many years of not hearing this song, it was brought to my attention by a friend a few days ago. Now I am obsessed with it. Only Annie Lennox could sing this song. Hauntingly beautiful.

It sounds to me like a couple about to divorce because there are arguments , things are not working, they don’t understand each other . She’s regretting things she had said and done . She’s hurt by his words too. Other ppl imply that he would be better off without her . She’s letting it all out in the song . That’s why she says “this is the book I never wrote “, etc This is at least my quick understanding of the song .
