Academy Award® nominee Quvenzhané Wallis (Beasts of the Southern Wild) stars as Annie, a young, happy foster kid who’s also tough enough to make her way on the streets of New York in 2014. Originally left by her parents as a baby with the promise that they’d be back for her someday, it’s been a hard knock life ever since with her mean foster mom Miss Hannigan (Cameron Diaz). But everything’s about to change when the hard-nosed tycoon and New York mayoral candidate Will Stacks (Jamie Foxx) - advised by his brilliant VP, Grace (Rose Byrne) and his shrewd and scheming campaign advisor, Guy (Bobby Cannavale) - makes a thinly-veiled campaign move and takes her in. Stacks believes he’s her guardian angel, but Annie’s self-assured nature and bright, sun-will-come-out-tomorrow outlook on life just might mean it’s the other way around.

For those saying 'Why's Annie Black?!' the answer is, because she can be. Annie isn't the story of a little red-headed white girl. Annie's story has nothing to do with being white. Annie's story is that of a young girl who helps soften the heart of a hardened, extremely successful man and creates a family while searching for her own. That is a story to which any kid; no matter their color, and any mature adult can relate. For those who don't want to see a black Annie, don't go to the movie. Keep your Edmund Pettus Bridge buns at home and comfort yourselves by renting 'Birth of a Nation' from Netflix. The rest us; those who will make our comments on the quality of the movie based on its content and its character vs. its color, will thank you for keeping your ignorance out of the multiplex. It stales the popcorn.

Most well-informed comment so far. I agree that Annie can be black, because it's good to go against the grain sometimes and show a different take on an old story. Also, the actress playing Annie looks just as charming and likable as the she was in previous Annie adaptations!

You're wrong. Annie is a white girl with red hair and freckles. Your heart felt philosophy is just that, but this is stage and cinema history, its a character who we grew up with and is concrete.You should know better. Next you'll tell us it's okay for Micky Mouse to be played by Kermit The Frog.
@peeblespebbles5689
@peeblespebbles5689 9 жыл бұрын
The thing is, when Annie was written the red hair and freckles were seen as negative things. They were seen as signs of Irish heritage at a time where there was a lot of Irish prejudice in America, in a similar way to how there is still a prejudice against black people today. Thus it's actually a more socially accurate representation of Annie in regards to how she'd be viewed by the general society surrounding her. As for your example of Kermit and Mickey, it doesn't work as they're both famous characters, it's not comparable.

Upset about how more modern this is? The pop remakes? Welcome to 2014. The original broadway version still exists. This version isn't going to suddenly wipe it out of existence. They are simply making it more relateable to the modern generation. And if you dislike this because they made Annie black, congratulations, you're a closeted racist. Also, the bigotry is exactly why the original Annie was made. So your current racism is exactly why they made her black in this reboot. Get over it. If you don't like it, don't watch it. Your precious Annie still exists.

I agree with you. The only reason why I'm wary of a modern version is because of all the pop culture jokes and references they'll probably throw in. Annie is a timeless classic for a reason. Throwing in pop culture references is a cheap way to make a joke and takes away the timeless feel. In twenty years, newer generations who watch it wont get any of those jokes. So if they could just avoid doing that, that'd be great.

Look so the thing is to black wash a character (turn them black) to make people think you arent racist is kind of just annoying. Its disrespectful to the people who tried to perfect Annie's character and to suddenly change her entire look to match what the public want and not taking into consideration the hard work of the original creators is really stupid. I would've been fine with annie being black (wouldn't have loved it but it would have been bearable) if they didnt then change daddy Warbucks to be black as well. They wanna show diversity and bla bla bla but it's so stupid that the two (main I guess) characters change their entire race. It's the same with white washing, but when someone whitewashes a black character (turning them white from originally being black) people hate and hate and hate on their company I get this is old but just wanted to tell you that.

Johnny Depp can play a Native American. Benedict Cumberbatch can play an Indian. Jake Gyllenhaal can play a Persian prince. But a little black girl can't play an orphan? The original role of Annie was not defined by race, she's an orphan and as far as I'm aware, orphans are found in every race and can be depicted by anyone.

When the original play "Annie" was created, people of Irish decent were discriminated a lot and casting the play as a little red-head was very controversial...kinda similar to the way black people are still being discriminated...especially in these comments. Casting Annie as a cute little black girl is also controversial apparently. So this is really staying true to the original play in a sense. I didn't really notice a ton of difference and it didn't bother me one little bit anyway...so why does it bother you?

Redonx Jess Blackwood, I don't blame Jeff Lewis for saying that the PLAY was from the 70s. Because the play itself WAS from the 70s. I accidentally put "play" in my original comment instead of "source material for the plays and movies" which was my bad. :) But no harm, no foul, right?

Annie has always been a bubbly red head in my eyes. Changing the story like this doesn't please me. I don't mind someone's race, but the story has always been in my mind as orphan Annie with curly red hair and freckles in that red dress dancing around. Hollywood has ran out of ideas and are now recycling movies. Not working. Also racism comes from ANY and EVERY RACE. Not just white to blacks. All of you complaining about more white actors cast don't realize there are shows called "Blackish" & such with only black cast. If a show called "Whitish" aired, all hell would break loose. Quit with the double standard people.

These comments show how ignorant people really are. For those of you who dont know, annie is not just a read headed white girl. Theres 2 annie's and she didnt have red hair, she had short straight dark brown hair. There was nothing wrong with that remake. So why when annie becomes black people have such a problem with it. Just because something is a remake, doesnt mean it has to be exactly the same. The whole point of modernizing something is to make it more fit for the time period. We are living in a society where everyone, no matter what race or gender is suppose to be treated equally. So there should be no problem with making annie black. JEEEEZE.

I grew up loving Annie, both the original and the Disney remake, and cant honestly say I am excited about this version. It's close enough to the original to pay tribute and respect but is great for a new generation of girls to learn about the story of Annie (which digs deeper into the store of adoption and love and hope). Yeah, it's different than the original. It's supposed to be. If they kept the original script people would complain saying it wasn't "new" enough. This cast is well rounded and well versed and probably more experienced than anyone leaving a comment. Kudos to the makers of this film. This looks like a great family movie and I can't wait to see it!

Then how come it is a flop and they are trying to divert attention from this flop film by saying (And I am not joking) This film was somehow hacked by North Korea (LOL) and released for people to watch online. It's also contradictory the News papers today say: "They hacked the film so people wont be able to watch it" and in the same sentence "They have released to film online for all to see" So they are blaming NK for the films flop. In reality it's a flop because no one wants to go see this PC rubbish except a bunch of smiling liberals with their head's in the clouds and sniff their own farts.

I think it's important black females can take the lead roles where a white girl is usually placed for many reasons. Lots of young black girls don't feel they're pretty or smart because of their skin colour and hollywood always choosing the white girl is a contribution. So this is a good thing. Like it or not. It needs to happen more. Also things need to slowly become more diverse such as romance movies with gay people falling in love and heaps more stuff in the entertainment industry needs to be fixed.

When the original Little Orphan Annie was written, chronologically we were a lot closer to a time where there was a strong bias against Irish people. By making Annie red haired, it was implied that she was of Irish descent, and by extension, the audience would have inherently known that was part of the bias against her. Changing Annie’s race to African American replicates this same dynamic in modern society, and that’s a big part of why so many people were upset by it. A BLACK orphan?! Nooooooo, keep her white and red haired and cute I DON’T WANT TO DEAL WITH HOW THIS IS MAKING ME UNCOMFORTABLE. Casting Annie as black in 2014 is a much more true to the original character than casting her as a caucasian red head. -odiedragon

And let's be real: Annie's initial redheadedness was a sign of implicit Irishness. By the Depression, people "weren't discriminating" against the Irish institutionally anymore (No Irish Need Apply, etc.), but prejudice still existed. If you're going to put Annie in a modern setting, making her Black is an excellent parallel to her being Irish in the original comics that really emphasizes the remaining underlying prejudice and racism that her initially being Irish only hinted at.

***** Komaeda was being all creepy and stuff. He was smelling Hinata's hair, he was stroking his… arm, he was, in other words, enjoying his alone time with his favorite "friend". "Oh Nagito," moaned Hinata, "I love you so much!" "I love you too, Hajime," groaned Komaeda sexily. He winked at Hinata, who flirted back. Then they put the thing in the thing and they did the thing. "Nagito, I love everything about you!" Hinata ejaculated. "I love your hoodie, and your white hair, and your sexy back and abs and ribs and lack of nipples, and I even love your happy-go-lucky attitude!" "Haha you said lucky!" Komaeda exclaimed. He grabbed the wine from the previously-undescribed table and gave Hinata a sip. "Drink up, we have plenty." "I'll do whatever you say," Hinata rasped sexily, "I love you that much!" "Then let me tell you what I love!" Komaeda said. "Is it me?" "It's you. What a lucky guess!" "That's adorable, Nagito!" Then they kissed like Eskimos*. (*Inuit, depending on where you live). Anyway, they finished in a white explosion. It nearly snapped their spines. It was sexy. "Computer, end program," Komaeda ordered, and everything vanished. Komaeda was clean again, although he was still naked. So, he went to grab his Starfleet uniform, where he ran into… that ensign, Hajime Hinata. "'What a lucky guess'? Really?" Hinata said. "Hello, ensign! Did you enjoy my program!" Komaeda said cheerfully. "One, I am an admiral. Two, I don't act like that. Three, I'm getting a restraining order. I'm banning you from the holodeck." Komaeda shrugged and left to go stop Captain Enoshima from causing yet another disaster. "By the way!" Hinata called, "Captain Ikusaba's in the system, so we need someone who will uphold the Prime Directive-" "Don't worry," Komaeda said mysteriously, "I'll do it… for you." He heard Hinata shake his head and mutter, "what a loser," and then step back into the holodeck. The End.

So it's a modernized version of Annie. So what if Annie is black, it all depends how well the actress plays the part. In Reality, Annie shouldn't be a specific color. She simply represents all the orphan children with a dream to have loving parents.
@ishtarian
@ishtarian 10 жыл бұрын
To be honest, I do have a slight -- very slight -- problem with this, simply because I'm largely a traditionalist when it comes to following the original material. And let's face it, "Little Orphan Annie" came out of a particular time and milieu, which would be almost entirely at odds with such a "reimagining". That said, it could be a very fine film, and yes, it looks as if the actress playing the part can pull it off with considerable panache. If they're going to do an updated remake, there really isn't any reason ethnicity HAS to be one or the other unless you ARE (as often am) a stick-in-the-mud-traditionalist-pain-in-the-neck. On the other hand, my major problem with this is the same problem I've had with Hollywood for decades -- ENOUGH WITH THE FUCKING REMAKES!!!!! There are SO MANY great stories out there, and some damn fine writers, too; why the total lack of imagination and creativity exhibited by this consistent reliance on remakes and sequels -- most (not all, but most) of which are tremendously inferior to the original? Now and again, fine. but jumping jesus, people, let's do some ORIGINAL material as well, whatcha say? Put this cast in something original, of good caliber, and let 'em light up the screen in the best possible way; don't nail them down to something which has already been done....
@SNaKeYe355
@SNaKeYe355 10 жыл бұрын
ishtarian Dude, I completely agree with you that Hollywood needs to stop with remakes and focus on giving us new things. That said, I feel stories like "Little Orphan Annie" are timeless and are one of the few movies that should get its update. Not for my sake, because I grew up with the 1982 version, but for the sake of the children who know nothing of Annie. This is meant to introduce a touching story to the kids of the new generation. I believe it needs to be modernized because let's face it, I've seen people try to introduce kids to older movies and they look at them as "boring old stuff". Unlike our generation, in which my father showed me classics like Rocky or The Godfather and I loved them as a kid. I know Traditionalists/Purists will hate the movie for its changes but deep down, at it's core, the story is still about Little Orphan Annie and that hasn't really changed. I'll definitely be seeing this movie with my little ones and the fact that this new Annie isn't of my color or race, doesn't bother me at all.
@zesalamel22
@zesalamel22 10 жыл бұрын
ishtarian I completely agree with you. I would add though that there are many classics which are loved by people of all races and colors who also happen to think on-screen diversity is important. Tbh, Hollywood movies from 1910 to 1960 wouldn't have starred many minority characters not because characters of other ethnicities couldn't have played leading roles, but because the racial bias prevalent at the time wouldn't have let them. I love classics, but it's something that is hard to miss. I will say this though, remaking classics as period pieces makes a stronger case for maintaining the same race for the characters. For example Jay Gatsby in the Great Gatsby remake couldn't have been a black or asian or indian dude because the setting would have made the believability of the character impossible. But for a modern retelling... I can't see how the race is central to the story... As an aside.. 20 years from now when Hollywood wants to remake movies like Bridesmaids and There's Something About Mary, I wonder if we will be arguing that the race of the original characters is central to their story. Anyways, remaking some of the classics in modern day setting necessitates the modernization of our racial attitudes as well. This of course is a separate issue than whether or not classics should be remade at all. I've grown a bit tired of sequels and remakes myself, but I'm also a huge super hero fan, so I suppose it's more appropriate to say that I'm torn. I enjoyed reading your opinion. Enlightened and reasoned arguments seem a rarity on KZbin these days. Cheers.
@SNaKeYe355
@SNaKeYe355 10 жыл бұрын
Nathan U I completely agree with you. Some movies just cant be remade with a black cast because of the character or story. Like the Godfather. You cant have a black Vito Corleone because the story is about an Italian Mafia Boss. Some characters simply cannot be changed because it changes who they really are if you change their race. Stories like Little Orphan Annie however are a bit different because the Story is about an Orphan who gets a adopted by a billionaire who later falls in love with the child as if she were his own. An Orphan could be of any color just as much as a billionaire could be of any color these days as well. Specific characters like Jay Gatsby or Vito Corleone cannot be changed so easily.

I think all these complaints are coming from adults who watched the original. This movie is for the new generation. I'm sorry, but my daughter would not sit through the older movie, but she would watch this one. The race issue needs to be put to rest. Whether you like it or not the movie is finished and WILL be released. I can't wait to take my children. I really hope the children in this movie won't be subjected to the idiotic racist comments shared on the internet.

I am considered the "younger generation" (im 17) and this modern Annie makes me really upset. I love musical theatre and Annie covers all my go to audition songs. I am not okay with this new hip-hop pop Annie. Creative idea that they made her black, but does everything have to be pop these days?! Kids younger than me will start thinking that Annie is a movie about New York, Money, and Hip Hop! That is not what the original is about.
@paradise_corp

Summer Staley First of all do you even listen to hip hop? I challenge you to listen to Public Enemy, A Tribe Called Quest, Wu-Tang Clan, etc. and tell me if ANY of the songs on this trailer sound anything remotely close to the "hip hop" you're talking about. Second, how is it "creative" that they casted a Black girl? If I remember correctly, the original Annie started as a black and white comic strip in the 1920s. Black or White, the songs are still the same. You are an ignorant little girl and I hope that one day you grow out of this ignorance.
@summerstaley
@summerstaley 10 жыл бұрын
I am not talking about the lyrics or bass of a lot of hip hop songs. I am talking about the geberal beat and use of electronic instruments. Also, I said hip hop POP, not hip hop rap. Maybe creative wasn't the best word to use, but what I mean is that having Annie as a black girl is a good way to make the movie less discriminant. Annie may have started as a comic strip, but the original movie brought it to life. I am not ignorant and you have no right to say that; I am not personally attacking anyone and neither should you be.

I am black myself and I don't agree with black Annie, sorry . I would have reacted the same if the original actress for Annie was black and they made her white . anyways , all this shit with black captain america and a female Thor I find it lame and beside the point . If they want to promote black characters and female characters in general as heroes and super heroes they should create original characters for them . Sometimes I think this is made on purpose to put oil in the fire , to create a controversy that at the end of the day will not benefit the black community nor women in general . Let white people be white and let black people be black . and ps : Casting cameron Diaz as miss Hannigan = bad idea , she doesn't look mean and she can't act mean , period ( i have never seen her as a bad guy in any movie and now I know why ) . but i would love to see her as a super hero , she was bad ass in charlie's angels her vibe fits more a good character .

See, thats the thing about fictional characters like Annie, their skin color, hair color, complexion, eye color etc do NOT matter to the story. Annie is still and orphan, she still gets treated badly, she still gets adopted by a rich man who was originally using her as a publicity stunt. The story hasn't changed, just the appearance of some of the characters

People who are saying this will "ruin" Annie are idiots. I agree the music with the hip-hop and the urbanization of the songs sounds pretty lame (as does the characterisation of Miss Hannigan by Cameron Diaz, that's just bad casting) but that has nothing to do with the race of Annie. It is never specified that she is white with red hair, that was just the little girl in the 1982 version. This is a 2014 version, a new interpretation of a classic, and people who are stereotyping and making downright rude and narrow minded remarks are just being intolerant and stupid. Nobody is going to MAKE you watch it so stop complaining!

Alivia Darling The word "Turn off" can be used in a none-sexual way, is that hard for you to understand? Now who is being rude? you think it's not rude to suggest that I was talking about my sexual preference when I was really talking about how I would relate to such a story. Yeah, it's set in NewYork, you do know there are no go areas in NewYork, don't you? Was it not a few years ago a couple of british students were in NewYork and upon leaving the pub took a wrong turn into a bad area to which they were then forced to remove their pant's before being shot in the head? Yes, I will say "DA hood" and no, I will never find their culture endearing or a "turn on". So you can stop suggesting any sexual undertones of my comment, you imagined that in my comment, not me, and you only imagined it up to pathetically take the low ground and try to shame me into silence. The thing is, Annie is a timeless character who is very iconic in appearance. Changing anything of the appearance of such a character is like changing the appearance of the United states flag, you just can't do it without people getting angry. And changing a characters nationality is a huge step in appearance change. So yeah I don't think they shouldve changed her to a black girl. Same with Warbucks for that matter (and why'd they change his name...). And FYI, just because you don't agree with the race change does not make you racist.

youre completely wrong. The american flags visuals were made to represent things. Each star and stripe means something. Zach Swasta Youre racist because you believe the appearance of who is portraying. annie can in any way takeaway from the story, which is untrue. Like i said, the first annie happened to be a ginger, she wasnt "designed this way". Every character has to start with an appearance, it doesnt mean they are bound by it. Saying annie has to look a certain way is foolish,that is not in anyway what the story is about.
@zachzilla26

Gary Oak No, I did not say it takes away from the story. I didn't mention any part of the story. I said a well known character should not be changed in appearance. And yes, she was designed as a ginger. She started out as a comic strip character, not based on anyone in particular. And if she was supposed to be "not bound by it", they wouldn't have kept the look for the all Broadway versions and films.

The time period is changed to present day because the life of a black girl in the era of the original Annie would have made this movie a more serious and solemn film (and more expensive). Better to put her in an era where they can pretend she has the same opportunities as the other white girls in the orphanage, and unsegregated. The story could have been unique with the portrayal of a wealthy black man in early 20th century. Sadly unlike the original Annie, this movie will be quickly forgotten because it challenges nothing and crosses no lines. Cowardly producers. As for the bigots hating on this film because Annie is now a black girl: This movie sucks because of people like you. It was dumbed down for you. Happy?

(are there any I forgot?) There seems to be more and more of them coming out and I'm really glad to see that. Especially since we seem to be out of the "Horror Remakes" phase. It also feels like Comic books have taken over the big screen. So these musicals are a nice change of pace.

I love Annie! It's a wonderful musical! I loved the original one so I know I'm going to love this one. Though I have to say I enjoyed the era the original was placed in. But I can understand why they didn't. I think kids now a days will appreciate it since it's in this time frame and not the past. Can't wait to take my nieces to this :)

I honestly don't mind them making Annie black, and I have adored all the incarnations of the character up to this point. What I'm most concerned about is the music. If the music is made to sound less "Broadway", then I'll be disappointed. There's certainly nothing wrong with updating the story and sound, but don't change the classic Broadway style of the music.

To all the people that are getting mad because Annie is black in this film. I understand(unless you're just being completely racist). I kept saying the same thing "why is she black, she's supposed to be white with red hair". But then i realized that maybe it's not suppose to be a remake of the original Annie. If it was, everything else should be the same, like the setting. This is modern so everything should be like back in the days. Don't think of it as changing the old Annie that we all love, think of it as a new story that we could love too. :)

In the comic strip, Annie was characterized as a redhead. This is not the comic strip. This is a musical that was fabricated based on the characters in the comic strip. Even if the original musical was filmed again, what difference what the skin color of the actor playing her is? She's playing a character. Not a white character nor a black character, nor a yellow character, nor a red character, nor a blue character. A character. To think otherwise says that, indeed, black people *are* different than white people. Guess what? That is the perfect description of a racist. So, would you be up in arms if a Jewish actor played Jesus on the screen, or if a Jewish actor played the role of a priest? Or a homosexual played the part of a heterosexual? We don't seem to mind men impersonating women and women impersonating men, now, do we?

If it's just a character, then it doesn't matter. Although if they make Spiderman hispanic, i would be pist because they just changed his nationality. I thought Annie was suppose to have a specific nationality, i didn't consider her just a character, that's why i made my coment. Also, correct me if im wrong but, wasn't Jesus a jew? And a gay guy playing a straight guy doesn't matter unless they change the character itself. That would be dumb. But yeah i wouldn't care if it's just a character. And i don't care about what a man or a woman those, unless it's something bad, they should be happy. Im not a close minded, racist, bigot.

For those of you complaining about her race, just shut up. Annie does not have a confirmed race. Is the movie called " White Girl Annie"? No it is not. It us just called Annie, which is a wonderful musical about a little orphan girl, not about a girl that has to be white with red hair. This is America, there are races of different kinds, I myself, am mixed with 4 different races. Yet, none of us can get along at all, which is why people from other countries hate America. And for the people who are saying , well there's such thing as black entertainment, with an all black cast, why isn't there anything like white entertainment, with an all white cast? I honestly do not believe entertainment should be aimed to certain races at all. You can't act like a race, but a vast majority of your own race might just so happen to act a similar way. I bet if Annie's hair was brown, nobody would care, but once you change her race, all hell breaks lose.

It actually looks like a cute and touching movie in its own right, but it doesn't actually feel like Annie - it feels like one of those touching live-action Disney movies that have come out as of late, like any of the ones with The Rock. Aside from the Annie music, I would never have known this was Annie (and no, I'm not saying that because of race).

i see no difference between this version of annie and the older one besides how its more modern (which isn't even that big of a deal). -So what if annies black and has black hair? Should it matter? no -So what if the changed it up a little bit? Same plot line, and honestly if you pay attention to the minuscule details like how he's running for mayor and how she is overly sassy, you got yourself a problem. -These views are coming from a 14 year old girl, and yes this sounds stupid stating my age but the fact that all of you have a problem with her race and how they changed the film up a little bit obviously doesn't mean older is wiser.

It's perhaps a sign of the modern attitude among the big studios - their sole focus is on the bottom line and making as much money as possible, therefore they prefer to stay safe by doing adaptations of existing works or endless sequels rather than taking a risk on something more original which may not be so popular at the box office.

Annie was ginger in the original because it was implied that she was of Irish descent and that's part of the reason she was discriminated against. Since Irish people and redheads are universally loved now, it makes sense to make her black. Black people and African Americans face a lot of discrimination in today's society (just read the comments below) and that's why they've changed her.

When I look at all the racist comments about Quvenzhane Wallis, about how black girls can't be name Annie because it's a white name (lol) or how this new version is a "hood" version; I think about the phrase "post racial" society. Because people like to say that we live in a post racial society when we obviously don't. Stop fooling yourselves by saying that race isn't a huge factor today, because apparently, it still is. Anyway, I thought this movie was going to come out earlier, I can't wait to see it.
