Great video as always! I have the original version and for anyone interested in sharpening these, I found that once finished on my finest diamond stone, they were sharper than they came from the factory. Being somewhat crazy about my personal view of what hunt sharp should be, I pulled mine backwards down a super fine compound loaded strop. My use of the word backwards, I gently held one blade and held two blades on the strop pulling the threaded end down the strop with no downward pressure, just letting the broadhead basically just touch the strop. The tip of the broadhead is the trailing end of this method. This makes these heads SCARY SHARP! I hope this helps anyone interested. John, I absolutely love your videos and always find them helpful and extremely informative.

Nice video! Would love to see an angled penetration test. Something fairly steep, say, 30 or 35dg, that would help weed out some of the BH that are not good with angled shots. Really like your changes to the sharpness test, however, we need some type of scale to compare to, such as a razor blade on one end of the scale and, IDK, a butter knife on the other end.

Thanks Billy Lee. Yeah, I should have shown that. Since the 344 sharpener still keeps the bevel at 44 degrees, it's still very durable. And the broadheads weighed the same before and after sharpening--very little is removed.

Killed my first archery buck late in the season with a 150 XL. Quartering away, liver shot. He went about 80 yards and was down before I could even get down from my saddle. Upon removal of the intervals, you could see a defined wound channel through the liver, and a whole soup of blood in the torso. Can’t speak to the blood trail, because I could see where he fell, so I didn’t have to track him, but there was a lot where he went down.

In my opinion the previous testing methods were good. However, I think the changes made are a big improvement. The sharpness test looks more accurate and more repeatable. I think the previous accuracy test was very good at providing proof of long range capabilities of the briadheads. The average hunter is probably best served by the new method with the 40 yard range. Many archers can regularly hit targets at 70 yards but having the experience necessary to determine if you should shoot at an animal that far away is best left to the small percentage of hunters capable of not only making the shot but knowing when its appropriate for the given situation. The new broadhead battle convinced me of its ability to not only penetrate but survive penetration in hard mass. I've watched most of your videos and this one was one of my favorites. Great video

Best scientific testing, this is great. The cost of heads nowadays is very expensive and as a consumer this really helps. I don’t mind spending the money, especially after spending over 1k for just the bow. We should spend appropriately on the broad head as well since it is one of the most important parts of the killing process and as a hunter we owe it to the prey to do it effectively and efficiently. Cost should nit be the inhibiting factor if the broad head is built properly. Edit: use a chisel to remove your broad head from the cement, might save it.

In my opinion you should dip the heads in olive oil or any oil before you shoot them through the jell to simulate blood and get correct penatration results
@LuskArcheryAdventures3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I've tried different things like that--baby powder, oil, etc. There are two problems: One, most of it comes off in the rubber mat and the MDF, and Two, the rest stays in my gel and hinders the consistency/clarity when I re-melt it. As long as I am consistent with each head, whether I use a lubricant or not, it should still be a fair comparison between the heads.

I like the sharpness test. I'd like to see how many psi it takes for different broadheads to penetrate heavy leather or something similar .
@LuskArcheryAdventures3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I've seen that. Those machines are really pricey and the basic bathroom scales are pretty rough. But honestly, what happens when you push it thru slowly has almost zero to do with what happens when it flies at 280 fps or more. People misunderstand that. Same is true with a 3:1 ratio design--fine for designing optimum angle for a wheel chair ramp, but not very relevant for a high speed projectile.
@joemarra22403 жыл бұрын
Hey I wonder if you could repeat the penetration test after using the Stay Sharp Guide and see if there is a measurable increase in penetration?
@LuskArcheryAdventures3 жыл бұрын
Well, the sharpness of a head doesn't have as much to do with penetration as people think. I've taken a couple 2 blade heads and dulled one with a steel file--super dull, and the other was razor sharp. The penetration difference was .5" However, I'm sure the sharp one would cut that tissue it passes over much more effectively than the dull one. And that improves bloodletting.

Just purchased a pack of the 150XL based upon this review and others. Product is well machined and spins true, but all three broadheads were dull straight out of the package. Not a chance for shaving hair. Wouldn’t pick up on fingernail. Had to use a sawing motion to cut through a rubber band. Weight of the broadhead and partial arrow shaft alone didn’t even mark the rubber band. Will see how these sharpen up, but very disappointing for a higher than box store priced product. Hopefully this is just me receiving product that slipped past quality control.
@LuskArcheryAdventures Жыл бұрын
Well that's unfortunate. They are very easy to sharpen with that 60 degree bevel. But also, due to that bevel, they will only get "so sharp." If you use the Stay Sharp Guide 344, you can change the bevel to 44 degrees and get them much sharper.
@scottm22443 жыл бұрын
With the sharpener promoted do the edges stay as sharp at the new angle or does it dull faster. Also does it weaken the edge?
@LuskArcheryAdventures3 жыл бұрын
Great question. With it still be a 44 degree bevel, it's going to be very durable; especially with the steel that these heads use. And the cool thing is if you don't like it or are out in the field, you can still just sharpen them back to 60 degrees on any flat surface.

With the short blade it is difficult to do, so it’s possible that they are sharper than I think they are. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated!
@LuskArcheryAdventures2 жыл бұрын
Did you use the 344? The key is that you have to get a burr on the opposite side of each edge before you move up to the next grit. It can take a few hundred strokes on each side.
@upatree102 жыл бұрын
@@LuskArcheryAdventures yes, I used the 344, but I didn’t do as many strokes as you’re recommending, as I was concerned that it might remove too much material, and affect the weight of the broadhead. Maybe I’ll try again with an increased number of strokes. Thanks for the response, and keep doing what you’re doing!

I also have a SS 344 and use it on most of my heads. I just ordered the Annihilators and was wondering, did you bother to sharpen the back of the blades? How would you suggest it or isn't it necessary?
@LuskArcheryAdventures3 жыл бұрын
Not, that's not necessary at all; that's only of minor importance in pulling the head out of a target or it cutting as it backs out of an animal if it doesn't get a pass thru.
@motoxron12 жыл бұрын
Is there a spreadsheet anywhere on all the results? I just watched the G5 deadmeat video and this one. Am I mistaken or is the dead meat sharper than the annihalator after you sharpened it?
@LuskArcheryAdventures2 жыл бұрын
Yes, there is. On the last video of 2021, which is a Scoring Summary of 2021, there is a link to a spreadsheet of all the scores. And to your other question, yes, the Deadmeat with its thinner blades is "sharper" than the Annihilator even at the 44 degree bevel. The edge integrity will be MUCH better with the Ann, but the felt sharpness not as good.
@iamtheshaker Жыл бұрын
I'm really struggling to choose between the Annihilator XL and the 3 Blade Cutthroat. Do you have a recommendation?
@LuskArcheryAdventures Жыл бұрын
Just replied to your question on another vid...both are great, but I personally prefer the cut size of the Cutthroat.
@peterm.eggers5203 жыл бұрын
Getting the heads sharper is nice, but what does that do to the durability? If you are going to encourage sharper heads, you need to compare that to decrease in durability.
@LuskArcheryAdventures3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I understand that. But the bevel is still 44 degrees--and only for a small width of the blade. With any kind of decent steel and thick blades like most one piece heads have, it makes almost no difference in durability.
@peterm.eggers5203 жыл бұрын
@@LuskArcheryAdventures Didn't expect a complete blade failure, but with the thinner edge, it might be chipped, rolled, or noticeably dulled. If we went by the steel's reputation alone, there'd be no need to durability test in the first place.
@nicogladis55023 жыл бұрын
Do you find that sharpening the heads from a 60 degree bevel to a 44 degree bevel changes the weight appreciably?
@LuskArcheryAdventures3 жыл бұрын
Nope. On my grain scale, there was zero weight difference. It removes surprisingly little material.

Have concerns about this head deflecting. Broadside, good head, lost bull last year, limited blood trail, only minor quartering away. Shot placement exactly behind crease.
@justinjones28823 жыл бұрын
Interesting, it would be cool if he did a quartering steel plate test.
@jmyhre73403 жыл бұрын
@@justinjones2882 would like to see that. Wouldn't necessarily need to be metal plate, could even be some firm board. Would need to be multiple shots, how broadhead struck the surface would alter outcome. Especially the annilator.
@LuskArcheryAdventures3 жыл бұрын
I'm surprised it would deflect on a broadside shot. That's weird. But weird things happen in the field. I used to do angled shot tests on plywood, but it was VERY rare that heads did not penetrate it.
@MattMacKo3 жыл бұрын
Is there a comprehensive list, excel. Etc where your broadhead list is located?
@LuskArcheryAdventures3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I'm compiling one for 2021, and will post it soon. Each year I upgrade the testing procedure a bit, so it would only have the 2021 scores. But I also have the scores from 2020 too, for those tests. I'll probably share both in the vid and then also post them on my Facebook page.

I noticed you are shooting into a sevr target… how does the target hold up to the broadheads? And how easy or difficult is it to pull your arrows out?
@leekovarik29482 жыл бұрын
And can you re do the test with the sharpening of the different angle? Does it alter the edge retention?
@LuskArcheryAdventures2 жыл бұрын
I love those targets. I’ve put thousand of broadheads into them. About the same durability and remove ability as a Rhinehart. And no, using the Stay Sharp 344 works great. You still have a 44 degree angle on the blade, with 22 on each side. That’s much thicker than most broadheads already. Still very durable.
@leekovarik29482 жыл бұрын
@@LuskArcheryAdventures awesome. Thank you for the info. How do the arrows pull out? I noticed with my sevr target, that when I use field points they are hard to pull out, when I use the sevr broadheads with the lock screw, they pull much easier…. But just curious how easy it is to pull the annihilator’s?

Do Bishop arrows ship overseas!? Are they a local "store" brand!? What are their tolerances like!?

Yes they do. Just check them out online: Bishop Archery. Straightness is sub .001" at 35 inches. Incredibly well made...and very high priced arrows.

Have you taken any game with these or have you just tested them i have the originals but did not get to use them this year the XL are looking pretty tempting.
@LuskArcheryAdventures3 жыл бұрын
I have not taken any game with either of these models yet. I took the Original in my quiver a few times, but sometimes just feared it was too small and opted for a larger cutting head.

Man I wish you would go back and redo all broadheads you’ve already tested with the new format. That would allow us to compare apples to apples.

I know! That's the challenge of updating my testing protocols. I tried to keep the scoring system of 0-10 so there could be some semblance of comparability. But I will be testing some of the older heads I've already tested again.

Will this sharpening kit work well on the Tooth of the Arrow four blade broadheads?
@LuskArcheryAdventures3 жыл бұрын
No, that kit is designed for 60 degree bevel heads--which means they have to be 3 blade.

What grain broadheads are you testing? With that said what grain do you recommend for whitetail?

I don’t get how the XL wins when the original beat it at everything but cutting size. Love the new testing system tho
@LuskArcheryAdventures3 жыл бұрын
Well, you have the scores of each of the tests so you can make your own determination. But in my opinion, the extra size makes the XL more lethal--for my hunting purposes, as I explained in the vid. The Original penetrated a bit better, but the XL actually cut more "tissue." If you multiply the depth of penetration by the cut size, you can see that.
