ANNIHILATOR Word Salad w/ Solos - Ol Drake Evile

Jeff Waters is still my main influence, and favourite metal guitarist. I've jammed to this song for years, absolutely love playing it. I spent years ('99 - '05) learning and tabbing Annihilator's albums. You can check out the tab at www.annihilatormetal.com (a lot needs revising but I don't have the time!).
If you're a guitarist into metal, you should get into Annihilator, if you haven't already. My camera can only hold about 2 minutes 50 on it so it cuts off halfway, luckilly just before the solo haha.

Waters is an animal. He is from the same town and neighborhood i am from. 🇨🇦 The local paper, Ottawa Citizen, he grew up right behind their building. They haven't written a fucking word about him. But he is one of the most respected guitarists in metal and with good reason. By the way, amazing cover, that song sounds like an absolute nightmare to play.

Man, that was inspirational... I `ve always said AIH was Jeff`s best album, and best writing and I stand by what I said. He has never equaled it, In my opinion. Excellent work deciphering all the leads!! My only disapointment was you had no whammy to do the outro solo.... Cheers man \m/ \m/

@Alchohollica it's a lot of alternate picking, the only string skipping is from the D back to the E. Only advice I can give is never give up and put 100% in all the time. It took me years to learn just a handful of annihilator stuff

@Ouijack170 self taught sat in my room for years. best way is to listen listen listen. the more you listen and try to figure things out (even if you get it wrong) is the best way to train your ears. Getting into music theory and intervals reaaaally helps too.

Yeah, I agree. Mustaine is a fantastic rhythm player and song writer. And he has written a couple of great solos. But there are no better thrash leads than Jeff Waters, Alex Skolnick and Marty Friedman.

@zakkara1 It's nothing more complex than practice. Just like doing weights to gain muscle, picking a lot to make your muscles used to it. I couldn't do fast down picking for years but the more I played the more it just became easier to pull off

@borredaniel do you mean pinch harmonics where you actually pick the note, or dimebag style ones where you descend the string and hit one on the way back up? for both id say some high gain pickups help (bill lawrence, dimarzio etc), high gain amp, maybe a compressor/sustain pedal, something like a tubescreamer pedal, also try laying your picking hand pinky on the string as you pluck it.

The hardest song I've tried to play, tried at my zenith of guitar dexterity, 20 years ago. And I say "tried" because that was all I got. I didn't even be able to play it, that diabolic riff at the chorus was a hell for me and I gave up. You play the whole song like a master but not even you play that part with the same sound as the album. It's impossible to play all those notes at such speed while going from the top of the neck to 12 frets up without missing notes along the way. Many times I have thought that it is something that is done like this in the studio but that it is impossible to do live.

which part do you mean exactly? the one that goes 10-12-14 etc. on all strings up and down? Im learning this right now and I have no clue how to pick it at that speed haha. It seems jeff alternate picks it too if you watch his performance.

That's an awesome goddamn solo, I love how it just gets better at 3:35. =) I wish I could learn to play that stuff, but I'm afraid I might be too lazy. It must take 10.000 hours of practicing to get up to that skill level. =o Anyway, I've never seen that guitar before, do you still have it nowadays? I've only seen the red Moser, the red/black Moser and the BC.Rich you showed on Facebook some week (?) or so ago.

agreed, but even Megadeth can be too technical for starting out. Metallica are a good starting point. for solos id definetly look at Angus young.

Hey, I've noticed a lot of people ask you if you learned by tab or ear. You say you learned by ear. Do you think you can give me a list of bands/albums to start off with ear training? Because I want to stop using tabs to find everything but at the same time I don't think that trying to ear out the really difficult stuff is going to take me anywhere since I need to start off small and work my way up! So I kind of just need a starting point. Thanks if you could help out!
