On this day 80 years ago , 8th July 1944, 2130 hours , two C-47 Skytrain transport aircraft carrying Paratroops of 1st Independent Polish Parachute Brigade collided midair at 1300 feet adjacent to the village of Tinwell, Lincolnshire.
All 26 Polish soldiers died in the collision along with 8 USAAF aircrew . Only one USAAF crewman parachuted to safety immediately after the collision.
Today as a result of a conversation with my friend Shaun Noble we met at Newark Polish Military Cemetery with Witek Pogoda Laurence Goff Gregos Jez Paul Trickett and Christine Bojen along with representatives of Tinwell Village and British Parachute Regiment veterans to pay our respects , placing flowers and crosses in their honour. Thanks too to Friends of Newark Cemetery for opening the Chapel and sustaining us with tea and biscuits!
