Clickable description for mobile: Anno's Article: diamond.jp/articles/-/224881 E-Kon's Tweets: twitter.com/out_sall/status/1211474824335429638 Who Is Hideaki Anno?: kzbin.info/www/bejne/a5_Xi5uQgLSsZ9E My Evangelion Analysis: kzbin.info/www/bejne/emeyXpyabtp_rLc Other Videos In Which I Talk About Eva, Anno, & GAINAX: kzbin.info/aero/PLw6UBKuaMyFCnCBgKerOXnxZ1-vc9sqSG **CORRECTION: I at various points state that the "current president" of Gaina is the one who was running Gainax beforehand, but I believe it has changed hands. One of anime's most influential and beloved studios has finally closed its doors after having turned into a shell company when literally everyone left, putting a new president in charge who quickly found himself arrested for sexual misconduct. With the Japanese news reporting that the "president of the studio which produced Evangelion" had been arrested, Anno felt the need to disambiguate the situation in stunning form, with a lengthy expose about his entire history with the studio. In it, we learn of how Anno loaned the company a massive sum of money that went into the ether with the GAINAX shell; how they were meant to sell Khara the rights to FLCL and Gunbuster, but then hiked the price up and then suddenly went behind their backs to sell them elsewhere; and how the management has been so bad for so long, that Anno hadn't even wanted the studio to produce Evangelion in the first place! It's a hell of a story rife with gems that cast potential new light on history and Anno's work--including indications which spur my speculation that the changes to Eva's story in the Rebiulds were the result of the original project which Anno cancelled in order to take a responsible course with Evangelion. www.excite.co.jp/news/article/E1380729604652/ This is an article in 2013 from one of the lesser know Gainax guys/Trigger founders Masahiko Otsuka. To Paraphrase the part that is most relevant to Anno's involvement, apparently Otsuka and Imaishi decided during the production of Panty and Stocking that they no longer wanted to work with Gainax for what would become KlK and everything that would come after and it was Anno that advised them to make their own studio and pull all of the talent out of Gainax to get out of that sinking ship. They may have fucked him with the IP shuffling, but he essentially served them their just deserts in advising the Trigger team to leave. I do wonder if we'll get a new statement from them regarding this now that Anno has laid his cards on the table.

I actually just did a research paper on Gainax, and throughout my research I just got a very weird impression of Hiroyuki Yamaga (who I believe is who you're talking about as president of Gaina). Including that when Toshio Okada (who kinda started the mismanagement thing but seems to have been less money hungry and more just chaotic) was president and before the production issues of uru in blue, Okada had literally said he wouldn't allow Yamaga to make Uru in Blue because it was essentially just Streets of Fire. Then Yamaga later on keeps saying he'll make it or write a book series and he never really does either. Then like after no word of it for 10+ years he showed up at Fanime (convention in San Jose) and announced they were still working on making it.

Hiroyuki Yamaga also attended Connichi (con in Kassel, Germany) pretty much yearly alongside some Gainax staff to advertise their Matsumoto Leiji movie trilogy (technically just a Gainax panel, but everything but these three movies was shot down as a topic). Basically a 30 minute product pitch that felt like a business meeting, definitely the strangest ones I've attended. Though not nearly as strange as the Uru in Blue story.

Another nitpick: As well as animation production, I.G co-financed FLCL, as they were part of its production committee with Gainax and King Record (Star Child). They were even the master licensor for the show's overseas rights. The English adaptation was co-produced by Synch-Point (who at the time was a subsidiary of Broccoli) and Production I.G, LLC. (aka I.G USA). They put just as much love and care into that series as the other two companies. Also, I.G Port is a power player, I highly doubt they were hurting for money. Their output of anime is higher than most other studios (with their subsidiaries: Xebec [who up until early 2019, before being split with the actual studio going to Sunrise and Xebec's IPs and the Xebeczwei animation studio remaining with I.G], Wit Studio, and a few other studios whose name escape me at the moment. That diatribe aside, my point is that I.G was more heavily involved with the original FLCL OVA than you let on. Can't speak on the Progressive and Alternative as, outside of Progressive's 1st ep, I haven't seen them, but I do know that Kazuya Tsurumaki was credited as a supervisor for the series, so you can't exclude him from blame on that one lol

It’s just ironic that the people of Japan have this stigma of being respectful and having family-like morality, but when it comes to business they’re just as corrupt as businesses run in America. Kojima wanted to do other things, but Konami coerced him to stay and make more and more MGS games by granting him his own production company. Little did he know that he’d arguably waste a decade of his life just pushing out more MGS content. Death Stranding is a weird game, but it goes to show the kind of creativity Kojima has. We could’ve gotten some really great IP’s from him. Anno fundamentally went through the same shitty business practices of Gainax but was smart enough to leave early.

I like 3.0 so much that I sometimes forget there are Eva fans who have trouble with it. It is the most Eva film out of the first three. You can't have the effect NGE had by repeating NGE. If in NGE Anno was playing with expectations for mecha and anime in general, he is now playing with Evangelion itself.

@@fernie-fernandez I mean honestly it is impossible for an anime to even get close to what the manga looks like but there a bunch of well known studios that could do a way better job than what we got. @jambott55204 жыл бұрын
Fernie Fernandez digital animation is only a good thing for the anime industry. It makes every frame cheaper and quicker, meaning that it is possible to draw higher quality and better animated shows with the same staff and budget. Censorship is a bitch, but it wont stop berserk in all its glory. Maybe some of the worst stuff will happen off screen, but a lot of it will stay. There are plenty of examples of completely fucked up shit going uncensored in anime.

Bless Anno for not being a sellout asshole and actually wanting to help make good anime. Though it sucks that to do so he needed to make the Eva Rebuilds the way they were. I love Eva and don't particularly like what the story and characters have become, but it makes sense if this theory of yours is true. At least we will always have the originals and the Manga (and some fanfics but don't quote me on that).

the real problem with anime studios is they pay too mucho and have too many producers and bureaucracy, what they could do with less than 20 people mostly animators and a few audio engineers/seiyuus they hire over 80 people for and that's why a lot of the time most animators/screenplay writers get paid too little for the kind of work they do forcing them to even hire unexperienced workers ruining the quality

A lot of strangeness just starts to make sense now. The Anime industry really is a harsh mistress, from the grueling hours of underpayed work of the lowest ranks to the insanity of the upper echelon. Maybe Anime truly was a mistake. Maybe it should just implode and let the survivors rebuild the industry correctly from the ground up.

Right when everyone is expecting Gainax to slowly sink into obscurity and eventualy die, out of nowhere, they implode and go down in flames but not before splitting into many smaller creatures that'll probably refuse to die for some years. It's as weird as some the stuff they made.

Digibro I've heard that most of Evangelion was actually made over at Tatsunoko, Gainax only having a few people working on it.
@montajedelespectador4 жыл бұрын
But was produced at in (money and animators) or like a subcontraction only animation?
@CornishCreamtea074 жыл бұрын
That's a bit complicated, Anime in general is made by multiple studios. And Eva was handled by other companies aside from GAINAX and Tatsunoko. GAINAX staff obviously did the directing, writing and planning. Aside form that they did, a small amount of in-betweening and Computer Graphics Production. Tatsunoko are listed as Animation Production alongside GAINAX. They are listed as doing most of the cel painting, but I don't know if they did Key Animation, most of that seems to have been done by Production I.G, with a few notably people like Anno and Yoh Yoshinari from GAINAX. I sadly can not remember where I heard this from originally, and it is hard to find info as I could not find translated end credits, so I'm going off second handed sources. This would be better for Digibro to research.

Ok very dumb story. I started Eva for the first time the day it came out on Netflix and got 10 eps. in before I stopped because I thought it was stupid and overdramatic and fanservice-y. I have a very weird relationship with anime because I hate basically all of it but the 7 or so shows I love are more important to me than any other tv ever made. Me and my friend have been going through ALL the Ghibli movies in chronological order (first time for him, I've seen all 22 of them at least twice each) and out of the blue I decided to try Eva again. Start over on episode 1 but subbed this time. Now I'm on 16 and I feel like I've unlocked the universe. There's something in literally every shot and recontextualizing this knowing Anno was Jiro in The Wind Rises (my favorite thing ever made) brought me to tears on a few occasions. The reckoning with parental figures, the struggle of sexuality and arbitrary repression, it's kind of crazy this came out before 2001 because it really is this amazing post-9/11 tapestry. But I feel like all of this is just scratching the surface and I want to write a full paragraph about every other couple of seconds while I'm watching it. IT'S LIKE I UNDERSTAND ALL OF IT NOW. I'm not done of course and all I know is people say the ending blows your mind or some shit. But yea I've only know Anno through the Miyazaki connections and I've never looked at anything Eva related ever or even searched anything up but I guess KZbin looks at my Netflix and decided to show me this video of a guy with sunglasses indoors talking about Anno doing something or something. But yea that's my dumb story.

@@Smurfkobain10 I think the main problem is the fact that Aniplex (I think) required Netflix to go with a more literal translation as opposed to the more poetic original. Social media really changed the landscape for animators; I have the feeling that to some degree almost all the studios have similar problems (well anime nowadays is pretty much just glorified ads for other products), but unlike in the 90s and early 2000s now not only the community is huge but the staff can contact fans directly with info. That are was always know to deal with things on shady ways and slip it under the rug, but now more and more we see scandals in politics, different industries like anime or Kpop, big companies can't just do their shit and expect nobody will call out their bs anymore. I hope the next decade brings more power to creative teams and less to higherups that only see numbers.
