We have had some frustrations of late with the quality of cars being brought to use for sale or return, so after a somewhat badly presented announcement we wanted to fully explain why we are doing this.

I totally agreed. This gives me even more confidence in buying through Thorney. A smart move by John! I have serviced and sold a 720s with them and although I was lucky that my car (purchased elsewhere) did not need a huge amount of money spending on it, I wouldn’t buy a secondhand McLaren from anyone other than Thorney. McLaren - maybe you should consider bringing John in to take over the production line so that you can start building them properly in the first place!😂

My thoughts exactly
@spikyone794 ай бұрын
Same boat here, giving serious consideration to replacing one of my cars with a McLaren. The level of engagement and transparency from Thorney ought to be a lesson to McLaren themselves, never mind an independent specialist. I've seen Thorney criticised on certain forums for selling cars priced higher than elsewhere, but if a car from elsewhere might need £10k of work to get it into the condition that it should be in, it becomes a no-brainer to buy a properly inspected, fixed, and warrantied car from someone that obviously cares about their reputation and the quality of their work.
@staninator88274 ай бұрын
@@spikyone79Yeah, I guess that's the lottery of it. How much can you trust the dealer you're buying off. I bought from McLaren and had an inspection from Thorney. There was not a huge amount that needed doing, and McLaren sorted it under their warranty. There ARE good McLaren dealers out there, there are also bad ones. With Thorney you'll know that a car you buy from them will have been prepared to very high standards, that's why they're a little more expensive.
@marklee75454 ай бұрын
Completely agree (as another non-McLaren owner). Outstanding video. If only all used car dealers were as honest and transparent. If I was considered a McLaren (and yes, I’m tempted!) Thorney would be one of my first points of call.

John - you have been the best advocate of McLaren since the start , my own dealings with you selling my Mckaren 720 s last year were excellent .. Yes it needed wing repair , but everything you did was excellent and puts the dealers to shame . The price achieved was excellent and to achieve a £155k price point without the new owner even seeing the car based on your name and warranty says it all . Spot on John . Mike

Unfortunately Thorney motor sports is getting hit with the toxicity in general that comes with the car community. I agree with you guys 100% since it's your name and warranty you cannot simply let broken things slide as in the end you will ultimately pay for it one way or another. Cheers from across the pond. Great job guys keep up the good work. Wish you guys were here to service our cars.😊

Very well said John :) To be clear, I am only in a Mclaren because of you guys - I'm more in the 'over-extended enthusiast' category than the 'casually comfortable'... so I couldn't risk the Mc-dealer network (which is quite an indictment) and damn certainly not any generic sports-car outlet! If a seller is unhappy their car needs work, I'd tell the buyer the work that needs to be done and how much it would cost to bring it up to standard. Your reputation is not worth ruining over a cheap seller.
@Eastbarn13 ай бұрын
Unfortunately, he can’t do that unless he refuses to sell the car without doing all the work. The buyer who says, no problem, I will get it done usually won’t bother and then tells everyone that he was sold a crap car. It is surprising that these cars get in such bad condition though, surely most only do Sunday morning mileage?

This is the issue when people buy an entry level or used super car. Many lack the understanding that limited production cars like McLarens come with limited production inventory, which means really high prices. Many used super cars, McLarens included, are poorly maintained once outside of the factory warranty because of the high cost. This is why it is important to do PPIs, to have customer sign forms like the AS-IS NO WARRANTY, have them acknowledge that this is a USED CAR and things can fail even if all the inspections and precautions have been taken. But many people still fail to understand that when they buy their first used super car. Super cars should be treated like boat ownership. Expect to pay 10-20% of the MSRP a year in upkeep and maintenance. If that sounds like too much money, you should probably just buy a new car like a C8 Corvette with a warranty instead of a used Super Car.

I've had 2 McLarens now. My current 650s just hit 23k miles only 1 issue ever and it was a hose clamp. Cost me 3 hours time & $12 for a hose. The smaller one by firewall. That's it! But I also keep it on charger 24/7/365, I don't leave driveway until oil temp is grey on display(very warm) then I drive like an old lady first 10-15 mins shifting easy to allow gear and trans temps to come up too. I don't get it imo it's people like you guys say that beat shit up. Also the motorcycle industry is the same! It's our 27th year in the USA & we see more and more complaining about the bike or how long it takes to do. Why this video appeared in my recommendations I’m not sure as I’ve got no interest in McLaren at all. However, the approach John expresses here is spot on. Whilst my profession is a little different, it’s a service industry. When (potential) customers expect a top notch service for not a lot and get told to go elsewhere if they don’t like the fee some have become difficult. They seem to think that because they have requested assistance then you have an obligation to help them, I think not. It’s sometimes as though we should be honoured to have them as a customer 😂😂😂😂👍

I’d sooner pay £5-£10!more with your warranty knowing it as no faults and could be in the workshop for weeks than get one and having find out it needs £10k or more spending on it . The key thing here is keep them maintained fixing any issues along the way and take out a warranty mine had 13 months warranty remaining had just a few door opening issues which was all done under warranty I then took out McLaren extended warranty for another 2 years . I’ve had no major issues in 2 years of ownership but there’s peace of mind there just in case , you can’t beat a McLaren spider they’re fantastic to drive

I fully admire the sentiment but I am trying to work out the true underlying message. Is it that the quality of incoming SOR McLarens is so poor it is causing capacity issues in the workshop? Or is it that owners who want to sell are moaning about the amount of money needed to get their car into a saleable condition? Or both? Ironically the fragile/unreliable build of McLarens is something Thorney Motor Sport benefit from - i.e. their USP is how they turn a potential dog into a good trustworthy car. I've just sold a McLaren and in the market for another - videos like this make me question my sanity!
