Those are conference officials trying to look out for their undefeated teams. They were using their power the way the conference expects them to. The Big12 want OU and OSU undefeated when they play so the winner is more likely to get into the playoffs.

Bro, absolutely spiffing idea. That is brilliant. Players and coaches get fined, and I know refs don't necessarily make as much as them, not even close, but a fine that is comparable to the fines players receive in terms of % of yearly salary is completely reasonable. Get this idea in front of the right guys in the NFL and NCAAF stat. Honestly though the refs probably have the equivalent of the nflpa and it's stipulated that they can't be fined.

The trouble is the rule as much as the ref. The call is based on part (e) below, which prohibits "obviously altering stride" when an unopposed ball carrier approaches the end zone, so it's a technically correct call. Yet any reasonable sports fan knows the call is garbage, and the ref probably should have exercised some discretion and not tossed a flag. Here's the official list of actions prohibited by the NCAA unsportsmanlike conduct rule: "Specifically prohibited acts and conduct include: 1. No player, substitute, coach or other person subject to the rules shall use abusive, threatening or obscene language or gestures, or engage in such acts that provoke ill will or are demeaning to an opponent, to game officials or to the image of the game, including but not limited to: (a) Pointing the finger(s), hand(s), arm(s) or ball at an opponent, or imitating the slashing of the throat. (b) Taunting, baiting or ridiculing an opponent verbally. (c) Inciting an opponent or spectators in any other way, such as simulating the firing of a weapon or placing a hand by the ear to request recognition. (d) Any delayed, excessive, prolonged or choreographed act by which a player (or players) attempts to focus attention upon themself (or themselves). (e) An unopposed ball carrier obviously altering stride when approaching the opponent’s goal line or diving into the end zone. (f ) A player removing their helmet after the ball is dead and before they are in the team area (Exceptions: Team, media or injury timeouts; equipment adjustment; through play; between periods; and during a measurement for a first down). (g) Punching one’s own chest or crossing one’s arms in front of the chest while standing over a prone player. (h) Going into the stands to interact with spectators, or bowing at the waist after a good play. (i) Intentionally removing the helmet while the ball is alive. (j) Dead-ball contact fouls such as pushing, shoving, striking, etc. that occur clearly after the ball is dead and that are not part of the game action. (A.R. 9-2-1-X) (k) After the ball is dead, using forcible contact to push or pull an opponent off the pile. (A.R. 9-2-1-X)" from cfoaref.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/FR21-Rule-Book.pdf

I mean if that’s in the rules then this wasn’t technically a bad call but it’s stupid that it’s a rule and it’s stupid that they enforced it. Just because it’s a rule doesn’t mean it has to be enforced

After watching every Big 12 Football game this fall, I’ve got to admit I’ve never seen one play like this. There has not been ONE TD called back due to a taunting call except the one called on ISU vs OSU. (I record every Big 12 football game to watch them later.) The worst thing that could have happened is if this Ref caused ISU to lose this game for a totally bogus call. Thus, it was a major win for ISU to overcome OSU and the zebras on the field. Kudos to perseverance to ISU players & coaching staff on their win.

Agreed I think the ref was trying to fix the game for the higher ranked team, OSU. Then realized he couldn't tamper anymore because of the crowd reaction, which is probably why ISU ended up winning the game anyway. Would have been a bigger story if ISU had lost.

What’s weird isn’t that they called taunting but where they think the foul occurred. The ball is spotted on the 18 meaning the ref said he “taunted” on the 3. He turns his head around on the 17 until the 9. Then starts to slow down and do, I guess, his taunting high step on the 7. Then puts his hands up 3 yards into the end zone.

Ridiculous call. I'd have to put it right there beside the call against Kansas State in their Pinstripe Bowl against Syracuse. The K-State receiver scores a possible game tying touchdown, gives a brief military salute to the fans in the end zone and gets the penalty. K-State is backed up 15 yards , can't make the two point conversion and loses the game 36-34. This kinda stuff happens a lot to teams like Iowa State and Kansas State.
