Ha. That has always bugged me, too. Why would you spend all that time and money to create a realistic looking set or street scene then have a character buy a coffee, wave the cup around as they talk as if they're holding a car key, then plunk the cup down with a hollow thud? Drives me mad. The Law and Orders are really bad for that. It's as if none of the cast or crew have ever drank a hot beverage from a take out cup before.

I studied film music and we also did some sound design. I was shocked to find out how well our ears are trained to certain sounds, things you wouldn't even think about. For example, I had to create an ambient noise for an early morning scene in a farm, and I thought "OK, I can just go out and record some birds, bugs, the wind through the trees etc". But it was in the afternoon and very quickly I realised, my recordings sound nothing like early morning. It was obviously the afternoon. Now, if somebody had asked me before, can you differentiate between morning and afternoon bird noises, I would think "No way". Turns out, not only I and everybody else can, but it sounds very unnatural and weird if you use them the other way around.

Re editing: there is a story about the film The Eagle Has Landed (1976, about as topical as I’m going to get) that director John Sturges found a loophole in his contract that he didn’t have to be there for the editing and wasn’t. So the finished film was effectively created by editor Anne Coates (Lawrence of Arabia, Elephant Man,etc, although the directors were probably in the room then). But illustrates how infrequently the editor is just left to it.

@StealthBoyElite

I think some do try to fill their cups with dry/solid stuff but I still don't ever recall more than maybe one example where I'm convinced. For me, it's less the weight and more the way the actors drink from the cup, particularly that first sip. Anyone who has taken that first sip from those cups knows you do it with a very careful and deliberate action. I rarely, if ever, see that portrayed by actors. THAT is the answer I need :D The why to that. They're professional actors. Why is this concept so difficult for them?

Would shows with ever changing formats like the glory days of Running Man or Infinity Challenge work in the West? Minus the endless replays Korean PDs love. I would love to hear both of your opinions about an older case but still fascinating of Harper Collins publisher vs the BBC who requested an injunction surrounding the Stig from Top Gear's real identity Ben Collins when he wanted to publish his stories from his amazing career. I find it a particularly weird waste of licence fee payers money in court to protect the anonymity of a character who on the one hand people loved being anonymous but also the driver deserves to be able to write about his time as the Stig as there's some great behind the scenes stories to one of the most successful factual programmes ever made. Ben has a great KZbin channel and has a talent for content creation and presenting so it would have been a real shame for the BBC to have silenced him for the sake of character anonymity.

Empty coffee cups has long wound me up to distraction and I think understanding why they're empty (not containing liquid) is pretty straightforward (and if not blindingly obvious then easily explained as you did in this pod cast so thanks for that). But that's not what winds me up about it. It's the lack of acting ability to convey a cup with boiling hot liquid in it. With all the effort actors put into portraying realistic emotions and actions, why do they, almost universally, seem to have zero desire to even bother pretending that fresh cup of coffee has weight to it and must be handled with care, just so it's believable? That's the thing that gets me. It's not just the weight (which is clearly a problem highlighted in some of the clips you showed, which were hilariously bad), it's how the actor takes that first sip. Anyone who routinely drinks hot coffee or tea from those cups knows that first sip is an act of care driven by absolute fear of not knowing exactly how hot the drink is (as the actual heat is insulated by the cup). Why don't actors just... act that? If they're not waving it about as they talk (which is the worst example and makes me wonder if they actually went to any sort of acting school :D) then they're tipping it at their faces as though it's empty, or at the very least, filled with a cold soft drink, convincing me they're drinking anything but a hot drink. Also... if I was a production designer, I'd just have the cups be filled with something solid if actors can't simulate the weight themselves. Then all that's left is for the actors to learn the basics of acting so they're not throwing that boiling hot liquid at their faces like it's cold milk. But I guess no one thinks this is important (I think it is :D) Occasionally, you do see an actor do this right (and I don't think the cups have liquid in them, ever... it makes sense that they don't). If I was an actor, this would be the one thing I'd add to my resume at the top: Can actually act drinking hot coffee convincingly. I may not be an expert at acting but I am at drinking coffee from those cups and I'm 100% sure I could do this :D

The boxing thing is ideal for streaming services because they rely on gimmicks and people binging the new shiny to sell subscriptions rather than putting out quality content that will keep those subs running concurrently. Very little longevity in modern shows and those that do have the direction hijacked to maximise the audience rather than building something worth watching. The concept of ever decreasing sequels rules streaming.

The only problem I have with this podcast : I prefer the longer format but I love getting 2 episodes per week 🤷🏻‍♀️ you are great!

Usyk does use hate to sell his fights, nor does Joshua. I think others as well as myself find it a turn off when boxers engage I silly trash talk.

Oh god I hate boxing. It’s my belief that until we realise two people hurting, beating each other, is inherently, inhumane and anti civilised social behaviour. But I love you two.

One more thing about empty cups. You surely do not have to have them full of liquid. Fill them with something that resembles the weight of a liquid and your actors will carry them as if they have liquid in them. It's about weight.

Is this the best place to submit a question? I realise that in itself is a question, however, here goes. The Apprentice - do they actually get ready in 20 minutes? My wife is convinced there is no way that the boys, let alone the girls could manage that in such a short time. How many bathrooms do the houses have? And how come someone different answers the phone at 5:00am? Do they have a rota?

If there was a props company who made special "pre-filled cups" that didn't spill but still had the weight of liquid in it, using some kind of goopy gel maybe, would do very well. Also if all acting schools could give frequent lessons on fake eating, fake drinking, fake computer keyboard typing, fake musical instrument playing, and fake "texas switch" in-camera transitions from stunt person to actor, would be well worth everyone's time.

So DISAPPOINTING that when Richard was talking about Logan that there was no mention of him scamming people with crypto/nft, and that the opponents that he has had sofar have been small nonames

Any of us that are sensitive to are sound environments are not surprised by the boiling water factoid, and most of us could tell by Marinas demeanor and gesticulations that she would be an obnoxiously loud typer. I would be surprised if Richard actually is as most tall people are conditioned to walk on egg shells and tip toe through public situations. I think he’s just trying to make marina feel better.

I'm surprised that Richard didn't know that most of us can tell whether it's hot or cold water being poured. I thought that was perfectly normal.
