When this series first started, the most technological thing you would see was an office phone. The cops had to ring into places through pay phones on street corners. Now here at the end (or at least the end at the time), they're using mobiles and laptops and they could find the bomb site with the power of technology. It's honestly amazing how quickly technology advanced over those twenty years.

Well you know, the more technology advances, the faster it will continue to advance. We went from the steam locomotive to airplanes in about 100 years span. And now in just the last 50+ we’ve gone from having software to launch space mission to having more software in a average phone we keep in our pocket. Just imagine what we will have in the next 20 years. I bet dollars to donuts we’ll have phones that are HUD contact lenses by the end of the century.

Eventually they found out that the teachers the blogger alluded to in his rants were all being punished in a place called the "rubber room" which is where teachers are forced to stay for several hours a day while they are under investigation for various offences, no matter how bogus- they start to realise that the blogger is not a kid but a teacher, who was wrongly accused of sexually assaulting a student (the student pissed in a bin in the middle of class and the teacher tried to stop him) and it cost him his home and his girlfriend. They manage to track him down at the last minute and get the school evacuated just as he is about to start his killing spree, and they manage to arrest him after he injures but before he kills anybody. Aslo, Van Buren gets engaged and her cancer is in remission, and everyone chips in to pay for her medical bills. Happy ending overall.

There's a school where teachers are assigned once they get accused of doing something improper towards students, no matter how minor or lack of evidence, the titular Rubber Room. The culprit is one of the teachers, who was assigned there for something very, very minor and had his career ruined. He wanted to get revenge on his original school for ruining his life. Lupo and Bernard manage to stop the guy before he does any lasting damage, but IIRC, the guy is sniped dead before he can be arrested. Also, early on the detectives overhear Van Buren struggling to pay for her cancer treatments and that her chemo might not be working, so they organize a rally to raise funds for her. Originally, Anita is incensed and tells them to call it off, but her husband convinces her that it isn't weak to let others help, and even the higher ups at the NYPD chip in a bunch of money. In the final shot of the series, Anita gets a call from her doctor that her cancer is indeed in remission.

The gas station and park are not in Staten Island. They’re in Queens, near and across the street from, respectively, the school where the climax of the episode takes place.
