"Anonymous" speculates on an issue that has for centuries intrigued academics and brilliant minds ranging from Mark Twain and Charles Dickens to Henry James and Sigmund Freud, namely: who was the author of the plays credited to William Shakespeare? Experts have debated, books have been written, and scholars have devoted their lives to protecting or debunking theories surrounding the authorship of the most renowned works in English literature. Anonymous poses one possible answer, focusing on a time when cloak-and-dagger political intrigue, illicit romances in the Royal Court, and the schemes of greedy nobles hungry for the power of the throne were exposed in the most unlikely of places: the London stage.

I can imagine the real Shakespeare seeing this and thinking "Hmm... Now I know how Richard III felt when I wrote my play about him."

The movie is fantastic, the acting, the picture, the plot, just marvellous. It doesn't matter if it is true or not, or historically acurate, it's just a feast for the ears and eyes, good entertainment.

People who are interested in the Shakespeare authorship question may like to know that there is also a Jane Austen authorship question. In my book "Jane Austen - a New Revelation" I show that the true author of the Jane Austen novels was her cousin, Eliza de Feuillide. She could not publish under her own name because she was the illegitimate daughter of Warren Hastings, the Governor General of India.

I'm so exited for this movie. Finally another slice of tudor drama. I've been missing it since the tudors ended on showtime. :-(

Yeah they did question authorship even right after Shakespeares death. And this debate is been ongoing for hundreds of years and many different theories have arised. As for the movie, its just my opinion but it looks amazing if you know the topic well

I don’t know whether Shakespeare was a “fraud” or not..don’t really care. I like the plays! But I’ll say this: during these times, education was a privilege that favored the wealthy or those of noble birth. So the idea is not that far fetched.

Finally they made a movie with a very provable claim that the real author of Shakespeare' s plays was a never crowned English King.

He was royal and would have been the 40th monarch. Had help from another potential Royal - Francis Bacon - looks like James 1 Who was his half brother. It’s a rich story - makes the works more intriguing.

Who cares who wrote the plays - all that matters is that they've survived the test of time and been passed down through the ages, so we can still enjoy them today.

It matters who wrote them - it makes them much more knowing it was Edward de Vere - his life and the trials and tribulations come out in these works. People write what they know about. Adds so much more to the works.

The summary is so misleading. Theories of alternate authors for Shakespeare's work have arisen relatively recently in the span of Shakespearean scholarship. No one in the 17th, 18th, or most of the 19th centuries wondered at all about the authorship of the plays. This movie is all most people will ever hear about the debate, and will consequently give crazy theories much more weight than they deserve. Also this movie just doesn't look entertaining.

Wrong..while during the.time period it.was.well understood it.was anonymously.written for several.reasons..there is lots of .really good reasons a.person would not put their name on these plays poems sonnets...lots of deadly things in them..

Given the Elizabethan police state - yeah you would write under a pseudonym. Say hello to Edward de Vere - the true author.
