Try using a big circle hook, the fish won't swallow it. And they're protected. Also a rod belt to prevent getting a hernia. Gloves are good, too. Wearing flip-flops in the rain? No way.

I'm not the salt water expert but a buddy from Florida told me years ago how he used to watch people doing this exact same thing.
