Awesome awesome awesome TrainLover 03. I have all three of our locos, 2 in Ho scale and 1 in N scale and 1 car. Know this if you got the original Ortner hopper cars that were painted blue with the USS insignia on them, our original cars here were numbered 1 to 30. If you got cars numbered above 30, and they are out there for sale, we never had cars above #30. Those were all steel cars and have been scrapped. Really appreciate your taking the time to watch the video and may you have a very good day.

When I worked on the section crew for C&NW in Milwaukee in the 60s and the rail moved up and down when a car went over it we called it "Breathing." Caused by a bad tie or a muddy or washed out place under the tie. Keep 'em rollin'. Fred.

Man, dave, thank goodness that hot wheel worked for you. I had a tie crane, and the bearing came out , I had a push cart with an air compressor on the the deck, and that bearing came apart. Those side frame keys are doing their job on our cars. On a walking inspection, look for that dirty grease coming out, and that is how I found the boxcar inbound car at work. That's how I made my video on it. At least car made it back safely to you shop. Great video. Thanks, dave.

Thank You, for the kind words on Veterans Day. I like the practice of changing out the truck. All those bearings have run the same number of miles. Replacing all four has xx downtime. Replacing them one at a time and waiting until they each reach the end of their individual service life would be multiplies of that downtime. Plus all the other little things that did not get done because people had to deal with this unscheduled repair. It costs more but how much does the downtime cost the company?
@ccrx67002 ай бұрын
Excellent observation on that The Write In! We do not have the needed equipment here nor the knowledge to rebuild truck sets. We are a coal mine that has a RR, not a RR company. So putting an entire rebuilt truck set under a car that was rebuilt by a professional shop only makes quality sense. We are lucky they do that instead of trying to keep patching truck sets with inadequate knowledge. So you are right, we are extending the life of the trucks and actually saving money from major problems causing derailments by replacing the whole thing. I like the way you think! If I was in charge of hiring here, you can start Monday at 7 AM. Downtime and derailments cost huge dollars. Thanks so much my friend for watching and may you have a very good day.

So great to have the bearing failure located on time before it got worse. I tried to locate info regarding where Brenco get's the steel from but sadly that seems like top secret info since I can't find any. The only similar info I found was a Brenco Bearing company located in Russia which supplies to the United States and other countries.

I’ve seen and replaced more of these burnt up bearings than I care to remember working for Southern Railway- NS for 41 years, but I don’t recall ever seeing one that had all 3 cap screws (never understood why they don’t refer to them as bolts!) sheared off! That might have something to do with the speed at the time of failure. I’m not sure what speed your line typically runs, but most of our failures tend to happen at relatively fast speeds, + or - 50mph. Our mainline detectors are spaced fairly close together, seems like it’s 10 miles, and it never fails to amaze me how fast a bearing can fail. Most cases I saw had the bearing pass a detector with a normal reading, then set off the next detector and stop. In that short span of time the bearing has often disintegrated so badly that it’s actually cutting into the axle, and red hot! Something I’ve noticed on your cars is the presence of an Alemite fitting on the end cap of the bearings. That is a rarity on class 1 railroads now because years ago the FRA -AAR approved “NFL”, or Non Field Lube bearings. We used to have to degrease the old style bearings every so many years but it’s been so long ago that I’ve forgotten how often. There was a mandated number of ounces of grease for each size bearing, and this procedure was mandated by the FRA. I’d guess that some of the bearings on your hoppers are very old! Truly love your videos!
@ccrx67002 ай бұрын
Thank you for the very good comment Tom, I love to read and find out stuff like that. Our track speed is 25. We do not rebuild truck sets here, all are sent to pro rebuild shops. Thus when the end caps are put on they just have a pile of old ones laying around and use whatever is in the pile. Some of our caps have the button head fittings on them, some don't and that's why. We had a bearing pass the detector at 140 over ambient, and within 6 miles after chewed the axle in half, set off several brush fires on the ROW along the way too. Glad you are enjoying the home movies. Really appreciate your taking the time to check out the video my friend and may you have a very good day. @ When you say “truck sets”, I guess you mean the wheel/axle assembly? I’ve never heard them referred to as that before. We always called them wheel sets, but different companies might have different terms. NS quit doing their own wheelsets years ago, farming the task out to contractors. Our sets, when still done in house, were delivered on flatcars with specialized decks that the wheels sat in. Our shop typically got our wheels stacked two high, the upper level wheels sat in the valley between the lower level wheels. We’d go through a load in a week or so. The NS wheel shop was in Knoxville, Tn. Long gone now!

If you figure that car axle rolls around over 5,275,000 times a week when they are running 6 trains a day, 7 days a week, then figure that times 52 weeks, having only 2 or 3 failures a year for how many years those bearings were in service isn't too bad. Just like where I work: "We Run To Fail!". My company gave us T-shirts that said that after getting rid of the last of our preventative maitenance programs. When dealing with something overheated I spit on it first and if it doesn't spit back it's usually safe to touch. Acoustic profiling has been around for decades and works great. We have a contractor that comes around doing that yet but when my company gets a bad report they just tell us "Run it 'til it blows!". Great video again, enjoyed it much. Thanks Dave!
@2xKTfc2 ай бұрын
Run it until it blows - at that point they might as well save the money for the acoustic testing contractor, makes no sense to pay for it when they don't act on the results either way. Unless they need to check a box for certification or regulation only.

What's left of this one is really "boogered up" as you say, "there ain't nothin' left of it" as an old shipmate of mine would say.
