Its so good to see you and your colleagues repairing and fixing things. Something I've had the privilege to be able to do and enjoy most of my life. If only youngsters today were encouraged to repair and refettle things, the world would be a happier place.

I'm sure it was Geoff who ran a small repair shop in Camden years back. It was in the corner or a photographers studio where I turned up to install a phone system. Pinball machines that had been fixed were there to 'test' - I was in heaven. The phone system went in quickly, I didn't tell the office and spent a day playing pinball for free and also making tea for everyone. I'm not sure if I've ever played on such well sorted machines.

Hi, again Dom. When I was about 16 I bought a D1 bantam from my then school science teacher, mr Haines. It was made in 1950. The same year I was born.! Original green in colour. I painted it two tone blue, and went to work on it after getting a M.O.T. Did many upgrades to it including fitting a competition engine I got from somewhere? Changed the front forks from an henAriel colt 200 4 stroke which was all original (must have been mad at the time) but the law only let you ride on L. Plates 125 cc. Went all around Wales camping on it with a mate at the time on his James 197.cc great days.! Had for a while a Douglas mark 5. In need of a lot of work at the time,also a triumph tiger 100. Which used to scare the c@£p out of me it was so rough held together.......?? Cars came and the bikes went! Bantam reg No KOE 702. Is it still around..? I think I may still have the D1 workshop manual somewhere. Pretty rough though.

Hi Dom, the girder forks look like the ones I had on a 1952 James Comet (98cc 2 speed) it took me every where, North Wales was a regular jaunt, it was always good practice to carry at least one gear shift cable because they broke with amazing regularity. I could change one in about 2 mins after the first dozen broke, I eventually bought a heavier Bowden cable and the cables would last a couple of months. Love your Repair Shop Vlogs and your You Tube channel. How does anyone get something done on Repair Shop? Cheers George.

A little possible lead: in 2001/02 I was staying in the Post Office cottage in Bampton, near Cote & Whitney, in Oxon. In the grounds was a forge, workshop and store room left as it was on the last day it was used: coke in the grate, bellows, all tools, cart wheel ready for the steel rim, and several ancient bikes in the store next door. Worth exploring?

@howdymartin62583 жыл бұрын
Dom - my guess is it was used in grass track racing. Bantams were raced on track but the tank and general layout suggests off road but not trials.... so my wet finger in the air guess is Grasstrack. Interesting thing is that Bantams have symmetrical porting so if you get the ignition timing wrong you can start it, let out the clutch and it shoots off in reverse.... The actual engine is a DKW unit which the allies took from Germany as part of war reparations and was built in the 100's of 1000's by Villiers.

An ex-GPO Bantam; first bike ridden by many of 'My G-G-Generation'! After seeing 'Easy Rider' I put Apehangers on mine, didn't fit a longer throttle cable though so fell off with engine roaring at first left turn of the handlebars.

Absolutely love what you have done with the BSA Bantam , I had one as my first bike as well many years ago . On the racing front I know of two types of racing class for the Bantam ,one was road racing and the other was grass track so may be your bike saw action in one of these ? or maybe both ! On a serious note about safety on another film you were cleaning up a rusty hammer on a wire wheel wearing rubber gloves which would not protect your fingers if you accidently touched the wire wheel . I think it is great that you show everyone how to do practical things but emphasizing safety and showing safe working practices is essential ,rant over .

@DaimlerSleeveValve3 жыл бұрын
It all depends on who you deal with. I have had a couple of long to-ings and fro-ings with them, usually over problems at their end which could be sorted out bu having a real human involved. Typical was the time they issued a fresh V5C with the taxation class as "NOT LICENSED" instead of "HISTORIC VEHICLE". So that's what the chap at the Post Office wrote on my new tax disc. DVLA insisted I return the disc to them AND NOT DRIVE THE CAR until they sorted it out. Refusing point blank probably speeded up the replacement paperwork by at least a year.
