Another Entrance Into the Great Pyramid of Egypt? The Funeral of King Khufu | Ancient Architects

Through all of my research in the past few weeks concerning the burial place of King Khufu, one thing I can't get my head around is if he was planning to be buried below the pyramid, what kind of funeral would he have, with men wedging themselves into the Great Pyramid's Descending passageway, dragging the body of the king down the tight, inclined shaft, where risk of slipping and dropping him was very possible.
Then they’d reach a crude man-made shaft, tie a rope around his remains before lowering him down, where there are further risks of dropping him. Maybe there are more sloping corridors that go further down but even if there are, it doesn’t seem like a funeral fit for a king, it feels awkward and unlikely. So, Matt of the Ancient Architects channel looks into another option.
Logically there has to be another way down there and I actually think there is a very obvious route we are all over-looking, something now lost in a book by Jean Kerisel more than 20 years ago. His work needs to be made public again and I’m more than happy to do so.
If Khufu is buried below the pyramid, his body would be around 40 metres below its base, which is a huge number, around 131 feet. For the ancient workers, getting to this position below the Great Pyramid is surely an incredibly difficult and painstaking task, working in narrow corridors with little air and light, with many dangers and hazards all around. It feels so difficult that it feels improbable.
What people forget is that the Great Pyramid is built onto a plateau, on its north-eastern edge, an area of fairly level high ground, higher than the valley to the east and northeast. But how much higher?
Well, just 100 metres to the northeast of the Great Pyramid, that’s less than the distance between the Great Pyramid and the Khafre Pyramid, you find yourself 45 metres lower than the pyramid’s base. Keep walking to the northeast and you get lower and lower.
Therefore to get inside the bedrock below the Great Pyramid some 40 metres below its base, you only had to burrow a straight tunnel through soft limestone for 100 metres from the northeast, which is arguably one of the easiest construction projects on the Giza Plateau.
This is exactly what I think happened and how Khufu's body entered the tomb below the pyramid and I believe it is very likely that there was a second entrance into the subterranean passages of the Great Pyramid from the outside. Watch this video to learn more and please like and subscribe.

When I was 4 I made my first trip to the library with my 12yr old brother who was doing a report on the pyramid. That's when I fell in love with all things Egyptian. I remember reading about the cave systems under Giza when I was in 6th grade because I was doing a report for school. I'm 54 and still love all content on Egypt. At 28 I sold the house I grew up in. I had over 300 books on Egypt , I gave them to my local library, I wish I could have kept them all. 0:27 when I see rooms like this, I'm reminded of old military forts. All made of stone with structural integrity in mind. You'll find tunnels, random nooks and crannies. Seemingly meaningless holes that go deep into the ground. Besides their modern facade, they resemble structures like that room in the pyramid. The stone was built to hold machines, tools, weapons etc. That's why it doesn't necessarily make sense if the metal or machinery isn't in place.

Are you sure that someone removed the coffer lid from the king's chamber by breaking it into pieces? Let's assume it was Al-Mamoon's men: Why would they dig an entire tunnel to accommodate a long/heavy piece of treasure being removed from the pyramid, just to break other treasures into smaller pieces? I think you are right about there being a second, larger entrance to the king's chamber. I think AL-Mamoon found it and used it to remove treasures from that room. One of those granite blocks is a door that needs to be opened to finally solve this mystery.

But the "door" is not open. why would Al Mamoon or any other treasure hunter go to such lengths to meticulously reinstate the stone to its current condition? For that hypothesis to be plausible the "door" or entrance block would have to be removed , and how would we do that even with today's technology apart from breaking up the block . You couldnt just jimmy it out with a crowbar and if you could ( wich yiu cant) there would be visible marks

@@doubleooh7337 That 20 year guess can't be accurate. There is no way the entire work force of Egypt could work 24 hours per day, for 365 days per year. Odds are the building of the pyramids was done on a seasonal basis, after the crops were done, And they probably only worked 10 hour days, for 4 months out of the year, at best. Considering the construction methods at the time, I'd say it took 100's of years to build even one of the 3 pyramids.

Hey Matt, great video. Just one question... Is there any reason the 'Osiris shaft' that is on the hill before the pyramids (as Herodotus described) could not also just as likely have originally been Khufu's tomb?... the bottom shaft does after all open into a sarcophagus on an island surrounded by freshly channeled water (not to mention the four pillars you describe also once existed but were sadly destroyed last century, but images of them do still exist). not to mention, the name Khufu also relates to so much more than just the one king whom we know virtually nothing about... just a thought!

Very compelling. This is significantly more plausible than the descending passage shafts. I'd argue that you still wouldn't need the shafts in the passageway because you could build the flood tunnel without connecting it to the waterway. Carve the chamber, decorate, etc, and bring Khufu in. Then after everything was set, open the end up to be flooded. It would be a fantastic find. Thanks for putting this together.

This theory can be supported by those who believe the GP was already existing before Khufu and only a tunnel was constructed for his burial, and also those who believe it was constructed during his lifetime can support it. A previous video about expanding the pyramid can illustrate its development over time, and then used by Khufu to place his burial chamber directly below the apex. I really appreciate the way Matt proposes but never becomes "locked into" a theory, but only discusses it in terms of evidence. He shows a willingness to shift his views as new evidence is uncovered. It would be a striking scene, the royal guard, and rowers, appearing to sacrifice themselves, to be entombed with their king? Maybe they then used the descending passageway(ascending in this case), and the hidden connecting tunnel you have already proposed, to escape the pyramid later. Perhaps even making camp in the subterranean chamber for days or even weeks after the funeral? Or even digging the last part after going in? Maybe that's too much, but it's something to consider. The optics of the play would be outstanding.

It's still interesting to wonder about what is hidden below that area. Knowledge is power, the amount of power hidden in the sand, under the sea, beneath the ice. Areas of this planet and the rest of the universe. Great mental adventures my friend

I agree . Under sand and below the waters off the coasts of todays continents , I am sure that new discoveries await us . Now, speaking of ice ... I have always had a fascination with Antarctica , it is a HUGE . Though explored , though nearly all of it is concealed under water ice . I think if any evidence of primate or homonid life existed there would be enormously huge discovery . I am not saying possible pyramid builders but a culture that either went to the continent or left there and traveled by land or sea from there . Once in a great while discoveries are made that add a preface to what we know is history

back in the 90s i think, hawass did a live fox show, he led them underneath something, and stood on the left side blocking what he claimed was the entrance to the flooded osiris crypt. We. watchers, did not get to see it, but he referenced it as the place like in the book of the dead. The golden Jubilee could perhaps, been done there. But it is really a separate place from what could be Khufus tomb. This is really an exciting piece of investigative information.

I am learning new things all the time from your videos. The extent of the waterways around the plateau explain how so many tons of construction materials could be moved. This theory seems to be much more logical to me than the idea of lowering him vertically down a shaft.

Another fascinating video, even more fascinating than the last! I have two engineering questions for anyone interested and knowledgeable. Two devices known to the ancient Egyptians and still used, at least into the 20th Century, are the screw pump and the surveying wheel. It seems to me that the screw pump is more complex than the siphon, so is there any evidence that the Egyptians knew about or used siphons. Unlike some parts of the world, where mechanical or motorized pumps are used, I've lived in places where gravity pumps are common. You need sealed pipes and a way to prime it. Could the strange channels, small shafts and tunnels have constituted elements of a gravity pump? The other question is about the suggested canal and tunnel into the pyramid. Could the tunnel have been constructed by the coffer dam method, with the blocking section removed to flood the channel and tunnel as the final pre-entombment action, and the evidence removed after the fact? There is a lot of evidence that the tomb robbers were the workers, guards, priests and even subsequent pharaohs. All of the theories about steps to guard the treasure seem to ignore this. Preventing knowledge of the details, in movies and stories, has the workers killed for security reasons. I wonder if there is any evidence for this. There are discoveries of royal tombs with "sacrificed" servants/slaves in China and the Americas, any hints that the Egyptians ever did this in reality seem lacking. Thanks again, Matt, for an enthralling and thought-provoking video!

Isn't Herodotus referring to Osiris Tomb located near Chufu Pyramid?
@AncientArchitects

Krzysztof Sykta Herodotus states that it’s the hill on which the pyramid stands, so I guess it’s how you interpret his words. I wouldn’t say the Osiris shaft is on the hill on which the pyramid stands, but others may say the hill is the plateau... so... 🤷‍♂️

With every video you make, you become even better!!! Congratulations for this one also. I guess you are right about Khufu's chamber. Two questions: what about the 2 new voids the scientists found with the muon tomography? Why does the king's chamber has these massive granite blocks above, (many layers) while the queen's chamber being lower than the king's chamber and more weight is pushing on it ,doesn't??

I remember reading somewhere about large vertical shafts outside of the Great Pyramid on the south and east sides. Images are difficult to locate on the net but I did manage to find some good ones on www.gizapower.com/Articles/door.html. The east side shaft appears to be only five meters in depth but could go down considerably further. Keep up the good work!

Unfortunately ancient Greek didn't have a lot of words, so Under and At A Lower Elevation used the same word, ῠ̔πό. Looking at the Osirion it has the general shape described by Herodotus, so Occam's Razor puts Khufu's tomb there.
