The vita was way ahead of its time imo. It still has more features then the switch, which feels very basic in comparison. Would love to play all my old games again and smaller ps4 titles on a sony dedicated handheld.

Agreed, the PS Vita is an incredible gaming machine. Killed by Sony through lack of international support outside of Japan and expensive memory cards.
@TheDeathmail4 жыл бұрын
I think that's exactly where the Switch went right. They didn't add a lot of useless features for the system since most people would have a SmartPhone anyways. Why raise the price of the system for features people don't need? That said, the PSvita had too many issues. They probably should have started with the cartridge during the original PSP instead, which would have allowed backwards compatibility. They also should have just made the memory card able to use any memory card and found ways to make the system cheaper. The Switch, while limited, is limited because Nintendo wanted to make the system affordable and great. If they made it more powerful, it'd also be more expensive.
@alanlee674 жыл бұрын
Max G I got one at launch and honestly it is not that impressive. The uncharted game was extremely low res. For a system that touted its "power" it was far outclassed by smartphones very quickly. Only fanboys consider this thing "underrated". It's actually highly overrated.
@shiroshnur4 жыл бұрын
I also bought it at launch because it looked impressive. I then did nothing with it for years. Now I've hacked it, since its a lot easier in comparison to years ago, and mostly use it to play Super Nintendo games and gameboy advance games. While I enjoy it more today than I did when I first bought it, the Vita deserved to fail. The vita library is lackluster, P4G is a good game, but it being touted as the best vita game should indicate how meh the catalog of games as a whole is. Back in the early 2010s, everybody said that the best thing about the Vita is that it was basically a portable PS1. Now, the best thing about it is that it's a portable emulation machine, and you can use it to play your PS4 games over Wi-Fi. All those extra little things like youtube and Netflix are pointless to 99 percent of people because mobile versions run better and the battery drain on a phone from those apps is much less impactful the the battery drain on a dedicated gaming handheld. They're fine on home consoles because you could use it to watch them on your TV. However, with the introduction of smart TVs and casting devices like Apple TV or Chromecast, it's becoming even less relevant to be on a video game console. Ever since I got a Chromecast back in 2015, I haven't used Netflix on my PlayStation. The last streaming service it was good for me was Amazon Prime video, but I could cast that now too, so they're even more useless. When the PS5 comes out, I'm not even going to bother downloading any of these streaming services on it. I don't agree with the sentiment that it was ahead of its time. In its first few years, the most ahead-of-its-time thing it had was the shotty PS3 link play, which became much better with PS4. In every other sense it was kind of behind, because a lot of its features were competing against Android and Apple phones, and those blew it way out of the water. A lot of its unique features like the trackpad, touch screen, and Gyro controls were underutilized. And the camera wasn't anything to write home about, even for its time. To add to that, its proprietary memory cards were created with the idea that they would increase the speed in things like loading times and whatnot when compared to MicroSD cards of the time, but it only served to increase the price and we're quickly outdated. There is so much stuff in the Vita that only served to increase the price. 3G was useless unless you already had an AT&T plan. It was also kind of dumb because 4G had already been a thing for like a year. If you didn't have AT&T, it came with a SIM card and you would have to pay $30 a month for 3G if you wanted it. That means that the $300 3G model was actually 330 with a extra 30 every month, or it was just a wasted $50. The base $250 model was cheaper, but the PS3 super slim would be out like less than a year after, and that was only $270. Now, if you didn't have a PS3 at this point, you could decide to buy the brand new expensive machine whose advertised games were watered-down versions of games on the console, or you can wait a little while and pay just a little bit more 4 way more stuff than what the Vita was offering. today, I would say get one if you could get it for under $100 and already have a PS4 or are willing to hack it. otherwise, I still think it's a mediocre device with a premium aesthetic.

Mistakes were already made because the PS Vita is named as Vita from the Greek letter Vita that is the second letter of the Greek alphabet. And is for obvious reasons since the PS Vita was the second handheld device of Sony. It seems Americans have hard time figuring this out since their pronansuation of the letter is usually Beta(yes this is were we get the alpha and beta versions of things), but Greeks actually call the letter as Vita.

It's a shame Sony will likely never make another portable again. They will never admit that the memory cards single handedly killed the Vita. Smartphones did actually stole the market for handhelds. I can't believe people are still in denial of that. Before smartphones, Nintendo DS sold over 150 million and PSP sold 80 million. Today even with zero competition from the Vita and the expanding gaming market 3DS only managed to sell 70 million. So if you do the math you can clearly see the huge amount of lost customers there. Switch is successful because it is both a home console and a handheld system and has the support of the entire Nintendo first-party line-up so I don't know how you can compare it to a dedicated handheld like the Vita.

I got a Vita because I already had a Switch. Definitely worth it. A Vita makes much more sense as a companion device than a Switch Lite in my opinion. If an easy way to hack Mariko Switches is ever discovered, a Switch Lite would be a great option for homebrew, but for now the only hacking method for a Switch Lite is to solder in a modchip, which I don't think most people are willing to go through the time and effort of doing.
@mbphilipblack89933 жыл бұрын
@Some guy on the internet The only reason I'd get a Vita now is solely for the remote play feature and the added collectability there's only a few good titles but when it comes down to it, for me I'd just get it for remote play with the ps4 although I'm pretty sure you can use your phone but I'd prefer the dedicated handheld. All in all I would rather just buy the Switch Lite due to it still being supported and 90% of switch games are playable on it through handheld and I like it more.
@Some-guy-on-the-internet3 жыл бұрын
@@mbphilipblack8993 Makes sense. I wanted something different when I chose to get a Vita but I can see how the Switch Lite would be more appealing, even to those who may already have a Switch. The fact that the Switch is a supported platform is definitely a point in its favour. If a new hacking method is found, the Switch Lite will definitely be a better homebrew and emulation handheld compared to the Vita since the hardware is far more capable.

Their refurbs also have a huge failure rate. MVG is also a bit misleading here because the bag it came in on the video said "preowned" which is a completely different distinction for gamestop and you are vastly more likely to get something in working condition if it was preowned vs refurbed. Preowned means it was at a store at one point and tested/etc, whereas refurbs barely ever seem to be tested and generally end up lying around their warehouses for who knows how long.

The handheld with the most potential ever failed. That means one thing and one thing only. The games just didn’t keep coming. It’s so powerful and so slick. The fact it’s gone kills me. Also, to have a dedicated portable. I got a switch lite. My first thought after feeling how effortlessly comfortable it is to play full console games on the go, it reminded me of my first time playing my vita. The reason the lite will live on. Library. Sony for whatever reason made devs jump through hoops because of many things, one major one being compatibility with PS4. If they just made the dev kit more manageable, and supported it with more first party titles, it would have been and would still be the greatest handheld ever made. Next to the Dreamcast, I’d say this was one of the biggest missed opportunities in all of gaming.

The dev kit and software was actually pretty manageable (as a dev who worked on a launch game). They even made some of those tools available to developers in 2013 I think? Sony just didn't want to invest in more first party titles and when the PS4 hit big, they threw all their chips in with that.

In the early days, Dreamcast started off as easier to port for since the Dreamcast was meant to be easier for the developers... but as they got used to the PS2, the PS2 was actually the stronger system over all. 6:55 "It's a shame that the Vita is no longer being developed for" That's not true. New Vita games are still coming out every month. And by that I mean official releases that are being sold through the Playstation Store. It goes to show that despite all their neglect, Sony still considers the Vita a plattform to generate software sales on. And without a successor to the console things will remain that way for quite some time.

They should try again, but this time, make a GAMING PHONE. Hear me out, first of all the Switch's success alone should make them want to try for mobile again because it's quickly becoming as big as regular consoles. Another thing is that Sony already makes phones, and *Gaming Phones* already exist (I mean take a look at this Razer phone: kzbin.info/www/bejne/foi7imWBjMysars ), so Sony could easy make a new brand of Playstation Phones, they could be sleek, and take some queues from Switch by adding attachable joysticks and buttons. Then they could have their own original Playstation Phone Operating System (as opposed to using Android or Apple OS) with access to their Playstation store, with their own PSPhone exclusive games (as opposed to just crappy Google Play Store games). One of the reasons why I don't want a gaming phone right now is that there aren't high end brand name games on the app stores, so if a huge name like Playstation started to make games for phones with high end 4k graphics (better than what PSVita did) that would be huge, because everyone has/wants/needs a phone, and being able to play huge games on it would be awesome, especially if it's at a console's price.

I still think the Vita did the Nintendo Switch better. So many things on the Switch still need to catch up to the Vita. One feature I really liked was how every game had a digital manual that you could switch between while still playing the game. Really neat feature. The Vita had some great things going for it that Sony just abandoned: the "Near" feature was pretty cool in that it let you track down anyone nearby who's using a Vita and is signed into the Playstation Network. Plus, before Microsoft took it over, the Vita was capable of running Skype, and even Google Maps. Having said that the console can still do some pretty cool things, such as PS4 remote play (I know most smartphones support that feature now, but you have to hook up a dualshock 4 to get decent physical buttons) Media Server connectivity, practically everything the PSP could do, and cross controller functionality (this feature didn't get much airtime, but there were some games for the PS3, like LittleBigPlanet 2 for example, which allowed you to use the Vita as the controller for the game, and there would be elements from the game that would show up on the Vita screen, such as your character jumping from one part of a level on the PS3 screen, and landing on another part of the level that would only show up on the Vita screen). The console could've done well, but it was a mixture of declining interest in portable consoles mixed with Sony making some very odd decisions that lead to the consoles decline. But as a homebrew handheld, it's an absolute beast. I don't know how it fairs against the Switch in the homebrew world since I've sadly got the currently unhackable Switch, but I know that it still does an awesome job.

@@selforganisation Some homebrew developers theorize that we could get full speed PSP games (with the built-in PSP CPU, instead of an emulation core) with upscaling to PSVita rez (via the PSVita's GPU) using PPSSPP. It wouldn't work well through Adrenaline because the PSP's GPU just wasn't made for it. That's why I'm waiting for a release of PPSSPP which uses the built-in PSP CPU. @@PistolRcks I don't quite understand, do you mean some advanced upscaling? Adrenaline already has some basic shaders, if anything more is desireable I would imagine it'd be easy to add new ones. And anyway, Vitas has exactly twice the resolution of the PSP so you get perfect 2x upscaling to a screen of similar size, so I don't see any point in anything else (now for PSX there is because that has a lower resolution of typically 320x200).

Those proprietary memory cards is probably what held back the Vita more than anything. I think I had to pay $69.99 for my 32GB card back in 2013 or so, with the 64GB retailing for $99.99 if I remember right. Also, probably didn't help that the 3G models were locked to AT&T in the United States. If they were unlocked and you could put any GSM SIM card in, then it might have been more appealing, especially if you could have used it as a phone as well. As far as games on the system, and the hardware in general, it was top notch. I still use mine quite a bit, either Persona 4 Golden or with the Remote locally with my PS4 when I don't want to get out of bed or just feel like laying back and being lazy. I still have tons of PS+ games on there including Gravity Rush and Uncharted, back when Sony really gave you multiple AAA titles every month for free. Also have a few PSone titles on it as well, played through Chrono Cross and a few others on it where I might have not have finished them on console otherwise.

Also having to source out MS Visual C++ 2008 to install Content Manager was a pain in the arse from CNET. Outside of that, downgraded from 3.73 to 3.60 took maybe an hour of poking around, but once done I was happy with the result. Running something like Moonlight Streaming was an excellent test --- what I wanted to do initially so I could basically pocket my PC games on the go -- and while there was some latency, I could still play and enjoy the game. Mainly Monster Hunter where some of the movements are already a bit exaggerated. While the Vita may have died with its overpriced memory cards, modding it definitely breathed new life into it!

I just picked one up a few days ago on a deep sale from a GameStop that is closing. I haven't been able to play it yet because of sparse availability of these expensive ass memory cards. However I'm looking forward to getting some entertainment out of it soon, thanks for the video.

I've had my vita for about 3 years and its still my fav handheld. It's great for remote play with the PS4 , I've been putting off modding it for a while but after watching this vid I'm going to take the plunge. Still a great system IMHO.

its funny how sony released a vita patch a few months back but they didnt even try to stop the hacking, so now any vita even on any firmware can be hacked

I had one near launch, but my son who was 5 years old at the time screwed it up a year or so later by destroying the charging port (it was too easy to insert the charger backwards). I recently bought a used one for cheap and replaced the OLED screen with a new one I found on ebay. Good as new. Although the Vita is "old", it comes in tied with the Switch for me. It holds a very special place in my heart since it was originally a gift from my wife.

The PS Vita has been my favourite and most used console for years now But I was forced to play only by myself because no one else has it/thinks it's relevant Later this week one of my best friends agreed on buying one so we could be PS Vita buddies but ended up spending the money on other stuff, so this giveaway is quite convenient

Best handheld console ever. I still choose this instead of my switch lite when I’m on the bus to work.

@NINTENDO_SONYFAN SOLDIER says a lot of people, the older cheaper handheld is a better option for travel for many people. Certainly better than carrying around that shiny new handheld.

Agreed with Kyle on this one. My Switch is too big and expensive to even consider carrying out of the house when i don't have a backpack on me (which is, most of the time). My Vita on the other hand (that i paid 70$ for) , hell yeah!

I love my vita so much It’s my favorite handheld ever, well minus the switch because that one is cheating by being a hybrid, but vita is my absolute favorite pure handheld I initially bought it for Persona 4 Golden but now i love the system as a whole

Deon Denis oh yeah that too, and it sucks Nonetheless, i still love both systems, but the vita is my favorite pure handheld
