One thing we learnt yesterday was that if we had to lose one from Bruno and Tonali then I’d (very reluctantly) say Bruno. I know they are different types of players but the influence of Sandro I thought was marked. Bruno is great, mind, but Sandro Tonali just brings out more from the players around him I think.

Yes and no. The team struggled at times first half to progress the ball from back to front and Miley struggled in the 6 role. That Bruno couldn't get on the ball enough without coming deep

Tonali was definitely more effective in the second half than Bruno was in the first. Im not sure I'd use this game to reach the same conclusion as you. As you said, they aren't the same type of player, and each has a slightly different skill set. As others have said, our other substitutes also altered our team dynamic. Also, Birmingham approached the game differently in each half. There have been games recently where Bruno has been at least as effective as Tonali. I'd rather not lose either, as they seem to be developing a very good understanding as a partnership.

This was a very solid result for the Toon - I agree with panel that not long ago they would’ve lost this one. Good to see Wilson and Willock play well and get some game time. Osula showing solid development again. Also all those other players on the fringe of starting (like Pope, Targett, Kraft etc) also get some game time. All in all a good day of football. Well done Birmingham - you pushed Newcastle hard and played very well.

Osula was MOTM for me. If not for him we’re trailing at halftime. As if he was part Isak, part Joelinton. Could’ve taken on the entire Birmingham side at one point. Loved both his attitude and quality on the ball

I’d have a lot more time for BCFC if they hadn’t tried to kick the actual shite out of us, especially in the second. They need to learn that ‘physical aggression’ in the modern game does mean just repeatedly foul your opponent.

@@dompearson493did it though? We had utterly run them out of fuel by 55 mins. We could have stepped up two gears while they were breathing out their arses. Eddie had totally planned to drain them systematically. Their early goal was a shock but the fact the team stuck to their plan is credit to them. When we had the ball we made them work and then, remarkably, when they had the ball we made them work, too. We just watched them empty their fuel tanks.

Yer that was my thoughts exactly... an tbh he looked better on the right than he did through the middle. But he's an absolute powerhouse like Linton, so so strong an bullish but has some moves to back it up

We had 4 number 9s in the squad yesterday... I think Osula could reach somewhere near the levels of Wilson & Murph with the right coaching. He's a reet livewire like, canny exciting to watch with shades of Lua-Lua about his unpredictable direct play.

Backup players need to get some minutes in their legs so they're not completely undercooked when they're needed. Important to give them a game in matches like this. Wor gaffer got it right, said they should approach it as opportunity to compete for a first team place. This will make them feel more part of things, is good for everyone.

We've all got our opinions, that's what makes the game what it is. I think there is still something magical about the essence of the FA Cup, whereas the Champions League has totally sold out to the ECA in a desperate bid to stop Super League. Winning the FA Cup financially isn't amazing but it'd be more magical for me to see us win it.
