The AN-2 was conceived in the same year, 1946, which first US computer -ENIAC -booted up, so has overflown entire computation as well as sim history.

I recently befriended a retired Soviet/Ukrainian Air Force colonel. He mainly worked with Sukhoi Su-17s (and their nuclear payloads), but knows pretty much all of these old Soviet planes inside and out. He told me the AN-2 earned the nickname 'Corncob' due to its extensive use in agriculture. And you can drink the de-icing alcohol so long as you mix it with 2 parts water.
@IntotheBlueSimulations
@IntotheBlueSimulations Жыл бұрын
Haha, thanks for sharing Ruben - I’m sure the Colonel has some great stories to tell! It’s always amused me that Russian aircraft seemingly often use alcohol for cooling, de-icing etc, given the locals proclivity for drinking it. I’m sure one or two “Corncob’s” were flown by pilots who had just a bit too much de-icing fluid before flying haha! XD Cheers and all the best : )

@@IntotheBlueSimulations My father was a meteorologist in the Soviet Union. He once told me about pilots entering his office for preflight weather briefing. It was a short stop before flying back to their base on a sunny day. The captain did kindly ask my father to write down that there are icing conditions to be expected during the flight. My father replied: "Guys, look outside. The sun is shining, there is not a single cloud in the sky." The captain responded: "But the booze is already gone!". :)

@@IntotheBlueSimulations "Supersonic alcohol carrier TU-22" It is not strange if this is not due to the alcoholism of the pilot, although such a problem existed, but with the fact that the main currency of the USSR is not the ruble, but vodka. 2 principles worked "The hardest currency is liquid" "You are the master here, not a guest, take every nail from work" Theft of state property was not considered something bad from the point of view of citizens, since the USSR stole from people more than 1 of their property 2 of their friends and family 3 their time 4 their health

Thanks for the insight Leo! I didn’t appreciate that vodka was quite *that* pivotal in the Soviet economy / way of life at the time. I hope I didn’t cause any offence by the way, my previous comment was just a little bit of a joke (though a half-truth, as I have come across videos of Russian pilots having just a small “tipple” before flight). Regarding the soundscape, and especially the startup, I just checked with a personal recording, and my experience being near these beautiful beasts, and it matches perfectly in my opinion with the in-game startup. However, I would like to see pops and bangs added during idle or during prop control checks. Edit: also from my experience and verified with a recording, she does tend to just takeoff really short and climb like a helicopter.

Uses (basically) a license built R-1820 so should sound very similar to the C47/DC3. They can fly backwards relative to the ground under full control in a 35mph headwind, apparently fly quite well until about 30mph with no apparent stall characteristics. I'd love to have a go in one, awesome aircraft.
@IntotheBlueSimulations
@IntotheBlueSimulations Жыл бұрын
Thanks very much for the info Boggy, that’s great to hear! Some pops and bangs would be brilliant, if that’s true to life of the aircraft. The short takeoff roll and “helicopter climb” didn’t really surprise me (she is a STOL biplane after all), I had just thought that the aircraft might be a little trickier to control on the takeoff (but I could be wrong on that one of course). . . Much appreciated! All the best : )

From my research on the AN-2 and looking at the POH, the mixture lever is very rarely touched. Sometimes in the real airplane it is sealed in the rich position. I am completely intrigued by this airplane. It maybe the most ungainly, monstrosity, rumbling through the skies but I love it. Watching real-world startup videos, in my opinion it may just have the best sounding radial engine.
@IntotheBlueSimulations
@IntotheBlueSimulations Жыл бұрын
Hi BPK, I believe you’re correct. From what a couple of other people have said, the AN-2 actually has an automatic mixture control unit and the lever is only there as a backup / in case of failure (so it makes sense that some operators wire-locked it to the rich position etc). I never paid all that much attention to the AN-2 ahead of this review, but having subsequently watched a number of videos featuring the aircraft, I actually think it’s quite a beautiful airframe in its own way haha (it’s certainly a bit of a beast mind you!). Cheers for you feedback and all the best! : )

Love it. A friend bought 10 of these IRL when Latvia left the Soviet block for just $10,000 each. They ended up being sold around the world doing stuff like cargo in Africa and parachute jumps in Bali - and he still has one of them. I've had my eye on it for years! I've always wanted to fly it - reckon the sim is as close as I'll get so this is a definite buy for me.

@IntotheBlueSimulations
@IntotheBlueSimulations Жыл бұрын
Haha, well it’s hard to look past the 737-600, given the price. The 600 retails at $35 (a fairly “wife-friendly” price I would say haha) and is every bit as good as the rest of the bunch, one just gets the stubbier airframe (which I know isn’t aesthetically to everyone’s tastes). Each variant has its own advantages / disadvantages, but unless you’re hellbent on recreating real-world flights (in which case the 800 seems the obvious choice), I’d say the 600 is a great deal and it’s also more capable in and out of smaller runways etc (if that’s of any interest, though I guess the 146 would also have you covered there). Each variant has its own unique charm / capabilities though, so if you have some free time, it’s best to research what best suits your needs. I hope that helps a little : ) PS, I guess your wife is rueing the day Microsoft fixed up the WASM issues on the console! Enjoy XD

I completely agree concerning the "instant on" engine sounds, and utter lack of shakes and quakes. Would add so much especially to radials. Back in the early nineties I owned a '58 J35 Bonanza and even that 260hp flat 6 played a sweet little symphony starting up and shutting down both. To the ears, feet and hands, and seat of the pants. Whether it's a little 105hp Grumman Yankee trainer or a big AN-2, all vintage metal combustion engined aircraft share a common trait, they all carry a relatively punchy and torquey power unit which by design will make it's presense very well known tied to a relatively light weight and feathery airframe. As I go back in FS to the most primitive days of the original Bruce Artwick creation, I feel almost criminal in making any complaint at all. FS has become nothing short of miraculous, really an astonishingly achievement. But one just has to ask. How much disk space, program code and time would it take, do you suppose, to engineer in "study level" startups? That old Bonanza could be a bit challenging. Firing it on a 50 degree rainy morning at sea level Tacoma was a bit different than 80 degrees, zero humidity, 6000-ft Ruidoso. It came to life differently, sounded and felt different. Can't expect a computer sim to get that deep, alas, but seems to me that putting in the small library of sound files and coding to create as close to real startup/shutdown, individual to the aircraft powerplant, with the subtle shakes and feels to go with it represents the final frontier in getting MSFS truly "as real as it gets."
@IntotheBlueSimulations
@IntotheBlueSimulations Жыл бұрын
Indeed Gary; my first flight was in a piddly little 115hp Grob and I was still taken aback by the sheer amount of noise and vibration haha, especially during the start - I’d imagine a 1,000hp radial might have something to say for itself ha. You’re correct of course; flight simulation has come an incredibly long way and it’s perhaps a little bit sad that we will never be fully satisfied with our lot, but I suppose much of that comes from being passionate about the subject matter. If I can’t fly an AN-2 in the real world, I want to be as immersed as I can in the virtual version ; ) It might not be easy to fully model engine behaviour within a sim, but if you’ve ever flown any of A2A’s stuff, you’ll know that it’s certainly possible to do a much better job than we currently see in MSFS (their aircraft really do feel like a working piece of machinery - it will be interesting to see what they bring us with the Comanche). Fingers crossed for the future! All the best : )

As you said, great to see that the Famous Flyers/Local Legends are getting more feature complete lately. I love the variety of sometimes stunningly odd planes in that series. Yes, it’s been great to see how much better some of the offerings have been of late. I feel that previously, we were getting a few addons that other devs almost didn’t want haha, the last two (DHC-4 and the AN-2) have been really rather excellent though (they really feel like full payware modules, that we’ve been able to pick up on the cheap). I’d almost given up on the series around the FVII / Do J period, but I’m back to being excited as to what Asobo is going to bring us next! Cheers, all the best! : )

I believe it's the old variants that have the drag/flap bug. The modern variant slows down nicely. As per Wikipedia (I know, not a POH, but still...), in an engine out, you can set full flaps, pull fully back on the yoke and the plane just parachutes to the ground. I tried that and it worked, with a -600fpm descent and hard-ish landing.
@IntotheBlueSimulations
@IntotheBlueSimulations Жыл бұрын
I believe you’re correct William. It’s a shame, as the old variants are all I’m really interested in flying, but at least it should mean it’ll be a quick / easy fix. I’ve heard from a couple of people regarding the “parachuting” AN-2, that did make me chuckle. It does seem as though AT Simulations simulated that pretty well though. very-very good review. I was of course not waiting for your video as it was a no brainer for me because of the personal bonding. in my parents house we have that clock on the shelf (and it’s working the same in the sim), and there is an An-2 propeller blade on the wall… 😃 in my university city there was even a pub named “Propeller” and there was a whole An-2 propeller fixed on the wall. 😅 I agree that this is a stunning add-on, I’m also enjoying it very much. and I’m also struggling bleeding of the speed. hopefully they will fix it and the startup sound also. I’d like to have more liveries too and a spraying version would be also great. to simulate crop-dusting would really be fantastic! btw is this your new hardware?? your sim looks breathtaking. improved a lot! and as I remember the reference FPS of the Cessna was also lower before. 🙂

Thanks Péter! Great that you now have your beloved AN-2 in the sim! ; ) That’s awesome that you have an AN-2 prop blade on the wall at home - those things aren’t small XD Apparently the GPS version of the aircraft doesn’t have the same lack of drag. I don’t whyyy you’d want to fly an AN-2 with a GPS hehe, but at least it means it’s an easy fix for the retro version. A spraying version would be very cool actually. Maybe some 3rd party will be able to make a mod for that (I would be surprised if AT Simulations make any drastic updates, now that the aircraft has been released). This was indeed recorded on my new PC (you were the first one to notice haha)! I have pretty much everything cranked up now. Still only running at 1080p for now, as I haven’t had a chance to test everything yet / dial it in. Very happy with my new toy so far though, just waiting for some time off, so that I can really sit down and enjoy it haha! I should have a couple of hardware videos / reviews coming up also. . . Cheers and happy flying! : )

Great video ITBS! Excellent music and editing. Oddly, the GNS 530/430 variant has a lot more flap drag modeled to where you can fly around 50-60kph and put in some seriously short landings where you have to be extremely shallow on approach to get down to 100kph in the classic cockpit version. Seems like an odd lapse in QC to have different flight models on the versions. Also, will MS ever give us the same liveries across the variants? Thanks for the review - always comprehensive!
@IntotheBlueSimulations
@IntotheBlueSimulations Жыл бұрын
Thanks very much once again Tickle! Yes, I’ve heard the same from a few other people, regarding both the different flight models and the livery issue. Quite peculiar that we ended up with two different flight models, there must have been a bit of a lapse in quality control, as you say. At least that should mean it’s an easy fix though. The livery issues is a bit silly. I can’t think of any good reason, not to have all livery options, spread across the variants. . . I’m really glad you enjoyed the video! Cheers and all the best : )

Nice review of an interesting aircraft!😃 Last time i flew in Afghanistan in the sim it was a lot, or mostly generic scenery. And from what I read somewhere then, it was because of the military activity there. The satelite imagery was simply not available due to security reasons. Don't know if that's the case, but I would like so see full coverage there some day. 🙂
@zOMGREI
@zOMGREI Жыл бұрын
More comprehensive coverage is definitely possible in the future: what you read was correct, a lot of imagery in the country was edited per request of the US DoD while active operations were going on there. With that no longer being the case, I would expect uncensored imagery to slowly filter into the sim over the next few years as new imagery propagates through the various imagery providers.
@IntotheBlueSimulations

Thanks very much ToB, I’m glad you enjoyed both the review and the AN-2 itself! That makes sense. Asobo are very careful when it comes to military locations within the sim (most airbases etc having no coverage for example), I’ve just never come across an entire country in that state before haha. Hopefully now that things have wound down in Afghanistan, we’ll see more comprehensive coverage, as it certainly looks like a place worth exploring further! Cheers and all the best : )

Great video as always. I bought this on release and did a few short flights. I tried landing it on the Burj Al Arab helipad (as you do..), but the lack of drag was really frustrating for extreme stol attempts. Very pleasant to fly though and hopefully they’ll get the drag sorted out. I’m impressed with the An-225 as well. Looking forward to your video on it! I noticed you didn’t use the tail wheel lock on takeoff and landing. What condition would you use it for on this aircraft?

Thanks very much once again Øystein! Haha, an AN-2 on a Dubai skyscraper - makes perfect sense XD The lack of drag is annoying. For what it’s worth, apparently the GPS version does not have the same issues, so perhaps worth giving that one a try (at least if the flight model is correct on that one, it should be an easy fix for the retro version). I suspect the tailwheel lock should be used for pretty much every takeoff and landing haha. The only reason I didn’t use it was 1) it wasn’t in the checklist (so far as I recall) and 2) as I didn’t find myself needing it, I sort of forgot to turn it on ha. Happy flying sir! All the best : )

Haha, well I’m happy you’re happy Jo! ; ) So far as I can tell, there’s no trim gauge, just the green lights indicating the trims are all set for takeoff (this seems odd though, since the checklist recommends setting a certain degree of trim for the takeoff, so perhaps I have missed something). No VOR gauge either from what I can see - NDB’s (which most of the world has given up on) all the way haha! I hope that helps : )

Great video as always, I must check out Afghanistan's scenery indeed, I guess it's one of those countries that you tend to exclusively associate with negative things so admittedly I never bothered to take to its skies. The lack of flaps drag seems to a common criticism, I agree that engine sounds are a little bit muted as well, I would expect a bit more roar and it would indeed have been nice to have a few more ambient sound effects originating from the airframe during its stages of flight and overall manipulation in general but it's somewhat nitpicky indeed especially given its pricepoint.. Other than that it's still a very immersive aircraft, love its night lighting as well, similar to the wilga that UV illumination creates a really nice effect, on the whole it offers a lot of atmosphere. On a side note and not wanting to take away from this review, have you checked out the "Flying Flea", that was a very unexpected albeit positive surprise, I can't stop flying those thingies around burning blue's airports, great fun especially in high wind they are a great challenge.
@IntotheBlueSimulations
@IntotheBlueSimulations Жыл бұрын
Thanks very much once again Stefaan! Yes, Afghanistan is well worth checking out, although you will have to be a bit “careful” with where you fly, as a lot of the scenery is not covered by photo imagery sadly. The drag issue is apparently only a problem on the retro version of the aircraft, the GPS equipped AN-2 is just fine I hear. At least that means a fix shouldn’t be too tricky / too far around the corner. I’ll hold off until then, as I can’t bring myself to fly an AN-2 with a GPS : P Haha, someone else mentioned the Flea also. It sounds like great fun and I would like to check it out, but I have a long list of other projects to clear first - I might save that one for a rainy day ; ) Cheers again Stefaan! Happy flying : )

Thanks very much once again Lior! Oooof, that’s a tough one! Just to muddy the waters a little bit though, if I could only choose one, I thiiink I might go for the Caribou personally (it’s a really tough call to make actually - I’d probably buy both and justify it to myself that it costs the same as a typical single addon XD ). I saw this plane last year at my small local airport when I went flying our Cessna 152, It was noisy as hell and looked weirdly majestic against other small GA planes. It picked up skydivers and took off. It was OK-JID for anyone curious. I knew I'll buy this plane when it comes to MSFS no matter what. I was quite skeptical (low price and famous flyers category, which are not best quality possible aircraft in my opinion), but this implementation did not disappoint. For 10 euro it might be best value for money in whole MSFS. Some files are unfortunately still encrypted (I hope this habit will disappear very soon), but there is already improvement mod which fixes low flaps drag and adds basic autopilot, which is frankly mandatory for me (yes, I'm lazy heretic). All in all I can recommend this product. Thanks for the review. Thumbs up for environment choice, now I have to visit Afghanistan some day (in sim). Cheers

Fortunately, not at all! That’s two excellent aircraft in a row also now (the DHC-4 as well), which is great to see. I might have to check out that mod, although since the drag issue apparently only affects the retro version (and not the GPS version) of the aircraft, presumably the official fix should be fairly quick. It would still be nice to have an autopilot though (whyyy not ; ) My pleasure on the review! Happy flying : )

There is a but report open for the lack of flap drag, making descent & deceleration very difficult like you observed. It was found that the GNS 530 variant of the plane does not have this problem, even though the flight model should realistically be the same. It's true though, if you fly that version you'll find you have no problem slowing and descending. I was able to easily go slower in the GNS version than I was able to under my most extreme idle-power stall tests in the base plane version. You'll also notice the GNS version's cruise speed is shown at 20 knots higher than the others, which doesn't make any sense. The plane definitely seems to have been released with significant flight model bugs.

I had heard the same thing en0n (after recording the video). Funny that the more draggy airframe can go faster - I guess the it must have been given a more powerful engine in the flight model. . . My pleasure Andy! Indeed, I was expecting a fairly decent aircraft, having owned AT Simulations products previously, but I was also expecting that things might have been “dumbed down” somewhat, given that the aircraft was to be a “Famous Flyer” - I was very pleasantly surprised! Yes, not the easiest cockpit to get figured out (unless you’re fluent in the Russian language) haha. I basically ran through the in-sim checklists a number of times and used the little “eye symbol” to find out where all of the associated controls were. Once I got familiar with their location, I was able to find them from memory (as you would with any aircraft really). Another little trick that I found useful; I took a picture of the entire cockpit and the in-sim checklist on the screen at the same time, I then drew arrows from each checklist item to the associated switch. I hope that’s of some help. Cheers and all the best : )

GREAT review and walk-through...thank you! 👍 I'm a relative newbie to MSFS on Series X console (lol...be gentle, please!); as such, most of my time (so far) has been on smaller GA models. The AN-2 is such a...visceral...flying experience, especially compared to western planes. She may not be fast, she shakes a bit, is probably a bit smelly and is certainly not the most beautiful aircraft out there...but there's simply something very appealing to hop in, fire her up and go for a "low and slow" trip! Question for you...at one point, you showed a shot out over the right wing through one of the "porthole" windows in the main cabin. I use my Xbox controller for drone/slew on the exterior but am not quite sure how to do this INSIDE the plane. I can do a stationary pan and open the cabin door but how do you get to where you can go move through the aisleway, look around the cabin, etc. Thanks again...subscribed and I'm looking forward to additional content! 😀

Hello Neil, Thanks very much, really glad to hear that you enjoyed the video! Haha, welcome to the hobby then (or the sim at least)! It’s great that you’ve been enjoying yourself thus far and the AN-2 is certainly a different, but thoroughly entertaining option for the sim. Now that the WASM issue has been fixed up on the Xbox, there should be whole load of other great addons arriving onto the console soon as well. The answer to your question is both simple and also a little bit tricky haha. On the PC, one can move the cockpit camera around (as you would the drone camera), ordinarily using the keyboard arrow keys. You would simply need to assign some buttons / axis to the same cockpit camera controls however, being on a gamepad, I’m guessing you’re a little bit limited for spare buttons. At any rate, once you have figured out the best way to assign some buttons, you’ll be able to move around the cockpit and on most aircraft, hence move into the cabin etc also. I hope that helps a little. Thanks very much for the sub and welcome aboard! : )

It sure seems to work that way in the sim, so if true IRL they managed to get that characteristic right! Maybe the lack of drag at approach speeds is a software-dictated trade-off, anyone care to speculate?

It's an amazing aircraft for the price and I have really been enjoying it. It's a shame that the mixture control doesn't seem to have any function other than killing the engine when you reduce it fully. I set up a fuel flow gauge and an EGT gauge on one of my Air Manager panels and reducing the mixture has no effect on either parameter.
@IntotheBlueSimulations
@IntotheBlueSimulations Жыл бұрын
Completely agree HMR, I’m glad you’ve been enjoying the aircraft also! As you may have seen during the review, I said the same thing about the mixture. Another viewer pointed out that apparently, the AN-2 actually has some sort of automatic mixture control and the lever is only there as a backup, in case the main unit fails. So, it sounds like AT Simulations probably have that one correct : ) I hope that clarifies things. Cheers and happy flying!

Hi Ben, I don’t use any of the Nvidia filters currently, though I have tried them in the past. I actually just got a new PC, so everything was pretty much cranked up to Ultra here and I generally spend a lot of time tweaking the weather / lighting before each video, which can make a huge difference to how the sim looks. I’m glad you thought things looked good anyway! Cheers and all the best : )

Not being a sim guy myself, when you get a new aircraft to fly, do you get all the checklists and like some sort of NATOPS book? You can’t possibly fly this without something like that, can you? How would you know all the various settings and switches?
@IntotheBlueSimulations
@IntotheBlueSimulations Жыл бұрын
Hi Hunter, It rather depends on the product: Provided documentation can range from a full set of manuals, right the way through to receiving nothing at all (a trick that Asobo keeps on playing, somewhat annoyingly). The AN-2 didn’t come with any documentation and whilst it certainly means a lot more work is required to become familiar with the aircraft, I find it is still possible to get up to speed, using online resources etc. I hope that clarifies things a little. All the best! : )

I am a Sim Racing freak myself, Prob coz it is an easy option for simulation lol, I loves my rig an those few hours a day I get to jump in my sim rig and bust some laps on either Raceroom or AMS2, I been on ACC last night and a bit later on, As ACC got a new update too, lol.. I am seriously thinking of getting myself a used flight stick, I started Sim Racing on a PS4, I loved Air Combat 2 I think it was called, Fighting jets, I remember the PSVR or VR part of the game was great fun, Gut turning that is for sure, I can't seem to find that game now either, I got to find it as it is still a bit of fun for if a visitor calls, But after watching this bro, I am properly thinking about getting a flight stick and this simulator I got a sim rig to use, Only got to take my steering wheel off.... Is it as expensive as Sim Racing to do this Microsoft Flight simulator, I might have a look, But it be great if someone could drop me some advice on price and that...... Hi MAD-B, Well thanks very much, I’m really glad you enjoyed the video! Flight simming is very much like sim racing; it can be pretty cheap, if you just stick with the core game / experience, but once you go down the rabbit hole, it can end up becoming pretty pricey haha. MSFS actually has a decent selection of default aircraft (and a couple of high quality options at that), there are also some very reasonably priced addons (like this one). If you find yourself wanting some of the most in-depth addons, then you’re starting to look at +$50 though. I’d say it’s well worth picking up a cheap flight stick and seeing how you go; it shouldn’t set you back too much and you’ll be able to make use of some of your existing equipment also. If it turns out that the hobby isn’t for you, you won’t have lost out too much in the process. . . I hope that helps a little? Happy flying and / or racing! All the best : )

At a guess, as the pitot heat is potentially harmful to any ground crew etc when switch on, it’s guarded to avoid inadvertent activation. As I say, that’s just an educated guess though. . . I’m glad you enjoyed the flight! Thanks once again Rahman : )

Is this using the stock MSFS / Bing data, or using the Map Enhancement tool? If so, which source was used for this? I ask because the last time I flew over Afghanistan in MSFS it had almost no high definition satellite imagery.

It is indeed Stwutter! I saw AvAngel mention the same thing in her video and I completely agree; it’s nonsensical not to offer all liveries on all variants, if there’s no drastic changes to the texturing required etc. I’m sure some repainters will take care of things, but it would an easy thing for Asobo to fix. I hope you’re keeping well. Happy flying! : )

My motherboard is on the verge of dying, so as I have to stop stressing it at all I can't do any further testing, but from the brief time I've had in this I quite like it. As usual it's too stiff although somewhat less so than a lot of Microsoft releases, and it really struggles on the ground in a crosswind, but otherwise, nice. Correcting stiffness is usually a simple job if there's a cockpit video around ( ideally a fully instrumented flight test, but so far I've only ever found a Spitfire one ) the crosswind thing is a bit less so and I probably won't bother & just not fly it in a strong crosswind :p nice price, too.

Ahh no, sorry to hear that RD! As you say, the price is right and the AN-2 is a very enjoyable effort overall.
