This was my first PT song too. Then I was like "now I know what to expect from them" and listened to 'Arriving Somewhere But Not Here' and 'Anesthetize'. It was an ordinary day: A cloudy overcast Tuesday. I remember going on a walk after listening to these both and repeatedly thinking "Did my taste in music just change forever?"

Ugh, fantastic explanation. I don't remember the day for me, but I hope it was similar.

As the train moved toward the Himalayas, I sat there in the stillness of a 3 a.m. night. It was freezing cold outside. I had a cigarette in one hand and a beer in the other. Then, this song began to play. The moment I heard it, I knew I was in love. I was completely captivated. I know almost every song by PT now and also all other SV projects. I recently saw them play live in Oberhausen and it was best thing ever.

I got into Opeth by pure luck (I read a newspaper article about them), as a 27 year old nu-metal fan in the late 90's. Opeth turned me on to PT (and all things Steven Wilson) and Katatonia. Thank you Opeth.

Ah man Porcupine Tree is amazing. On of the few bands I can name that legit sound better live than in studio.

I love Porcupine Tree! Please do the live version of Arriving Somewhere but Not Here, the Ledones channel one from around 2005-2006, it’s awesome; and the live version of Anesthetize ( please do the Tilburg concert version!) is 16 minutes of a great prog journey. They sound incredible live in both performances. They have so many great songs.

Porcupine Tree, the band that broke up for 12 years and came back more popular than when they broke up. The internet has given bands like them so much more space than radio or television stations ever had, but the people out there knew they existed. They are AMAZING live! Every recording they always sound EXCELLENT, even now almost 14 years later. Highly recommend the live versions of "Anesthetize", "Hatesong", "Don't Hate Me", "Fear of a Blank Planet", or "Drive the Hearse".

A friend recommended them to me, I heard them and was like "my father must know them". And he does, he even got Arriving Somewhere But Not Here on the radio. I am glad I discovered their music.

They didn't exactly "break up". 😅 Steven Wilson just thought it would be cool to do solo stuff under his own name and didn't really tell the other guys.

Brilliant band. Steven Wilson the primary writer and singer always says that they don’t have any hits, it’s not what they are about and therefore they can play any part of their repertoire as an encore at concerts. That said the closer was almost always Trains and even when returning after 13 years with a new album and tour it was ‘Trains’ that wrapped up the gigs. Hearing their long term fans mimicking the clapping pattern is something amazing to behold given the out of time clapping at most gigs. ‘Arriving Somewhere but not here’, Anesthetize’, ‘the sound of something beautiful’, ‘Hatesong’ all well worth a follow up. Also consider looking into his solo career which is what was happening during the 13 year break.

Porcupine tree - where do you start - Trains is an amazing track, but it's just one flavour of the band in a massive bag of flavours. Anyone who takes the time to enjoy diving down the Porcupine Tree (and Steven Wilson) rabbit holes, are in for a treat!

Great reaction. Always good to see people discover this amazing band. Like other commenters have already said: best served live. As always I suggest one of their best live performance of any of their songs: Cheating the Polygraph live at Tilburg. 👍🏻 And Anesthetize live at Tilburg is a must see/hear.

I love Porcupine Tree. Twenty years ago I went from never having heard of the band to owning half a dozen albums in the space of a few weeks. The band is fronted by, and the brainchild of, Steven Wilson; along with his many solo releases they comprise some of the best music of the last 30 years - indeed, his/the band's discography runs to many hundreds of pages! I'd suggest ... Porcupine Tree tracks to try: 'Arriving Somewhere But Not Here' from 'Deadwing' [2005] - kzbin.info/www/bejne/gaHImqNod52faKcsi=ccRl6qzaFEEndlci 'Dark Matter' from 'Signify' [1996] - kzbin.info/www/bejne/qn3dmKiAr72seMUsi=w73kqFxLtLycCGS8 'The Sky Moves Sideways Phase 1' from 'The Sky Moves Sideways' [1995] - kzbin.info/www/bejne/qKiugKV3Yp6XZ5Isi=hSDJ4wGolkq74XY2 'Buying New Soul' from 'Recordings' [2001] - kzbin.info/www/bejne/gYfMiYWklMhlpKcsi=WviXXgIfzdPaEa-j 'Open Car' from 'Deadwing' [2005] - kzbin.info/www/bejne/rqayg5R9ocd1pbMsi=L6bPiaUaWvr1ysV9 ... and solo releases by Steven Wilson: 'Impossible Tightrope' from 'The Harmony Codex' [2023] - kzbin.info/www/bejne/p5OqnI1pZqugpposi=9bJ4v0sYPu_z1Xrm 'Home Invastion/Regret #9' from 'Hand. So glad you got to it and enjoyed the song. Trains is a fairly simple song in their discography, but I believe it's completely timeless music. I'll second that watching the band live is a real treat and Arriving Somewhere but Not Here is indeed a great journey you wanna be extra "braindead" for ;) ;)

If you like the way the song rocks out then listen to "Arriving somewhere but not here", Steven Wilson is the best kept secret, a guy that has never sold out but continues to change styles regardless of what anyone thinks ,but continues to produce superb and challenging music. Some amazing video's too. Best of all. He absolutely defies classification.

What is this about? Maybe a joke?? Because I can't believe you haven't heard one of the best progressive rock bands to hit the scene in the last 30 years..especially since drummer Gavin Harrison is currently one of the best living drummers in the world and Steven Wilson is one of the strongest composers out there today. ..unbelievable!

I can believe it. Until a couple of years ago, I had not heard of them either. Once I was exposed to a few songs, I began to listen to more, and then was able to see them live, when they toured for their new album "Closure/Continuation". Also, as others have mentioned, their drummer, Gavin Harrison is phenomenal.
