However unlucky of a situation this may be, You’re extremely lucky to have a guy like Bryan helping you through this process! It allows you to actually have laughs about it all because you know it’ll turn out better than it was! Wish i was able to document this process with my F30. 6,200 for 65k+ miles for a 2017 b58 with no core is an AMAZING deal! Good Luck

Oil weight is crucial depending on your application and how you drive . Also tuning , always check your logs for corrections anything can get triggered and go when your beyond stock. I drive my b58 like a nascar daily but I also change the oil every 3.5-4 I’ve changed coolant fluid maybe twice along with trans and diff , coils and plugs . Also a walnut blast and I only got about 35k miles now yea I know it’s maybe early and unnecessary to most but to me it’s necessary, car runs so good and smooth you don’t even see the motor shake with a cup of water on the top of it.

Yes oil is crucial I use 0w40 in my stage 1, I have taken it flat out around the Nurburgring and Autobahn and in general give it a hard time with no probs at 30k.

If i had to take a guess to what happened, the center bearing in the turbo failed. this allowed oil to flow into the intake system, through the throttle body down the intake valves. of course oil doesnt compress it caused a increase in compression since it was blocking the piston rings. assuming you were running higher than stock boost+increased compression from blocked rings, caused damage to the valves that you saw with the borescope. due to the leaking valves, and oil fouled cause the misfires and well engine failure

I feel his pain. My 440i has been down 10 months now due to a busted piston skirt on #6. I decided to build the motor, new pure turbo, etc. Motor was installed about 2 weeks ago and NOW I’m getting faulty installation faults for both the intake and exhaust cams. The shop doing the removal/ installation can’t touch it as they didn’t build it and the engine builder is in another state…So frustrating…I’m so sick of this car man…I’m literally $20k out of pocket and almost a year into this repair and still can’t drive my car. It just seems to be one thing after another. He’s very very VERY fortunate to have you as a resource in this very unfortunate circumstance.

Ouch, a Blown bullet-proof B58. Hard to believe the B58 piston rings failed like a crappy Audi 4-cyl. I guess if the Big Turbo failed, there would be oil in all 6 cylinders, not just No. 1. When you use Liqui Moly's Ceratec, it is the same color as a Cafe Latte. If you get your oil changed at an BMW Indie Shop, the tech will freak out when he sees Starbucks Coffee coming out of your engine oil pan.

I had the same thing happen to my G32. Cylinder 1. The only thing the logs before the engine went out was a drop in fuel pressure and fuel cutting off cylinder 1.

Sorry to hear. Remember that the oil cooler has a ton of shavings in it. Also that piece of valve went through the turbo as well :(

Nice vid guys, keep up the great work! Liqui Moly make great products; I'm keen to see how their trans fluid goes in the ZF 8 speed... I've got a trans fluid change coming up, but I've only had experience using either ZF fluids in the 6/8 HP's, and also Motul fluids in the 6HP. FWIW - with regards to oil and meeting BMW spec (LL-01 / LL-01 FE / LL-04 etc.)... this generally only applies if you plan on extended mileage intervals (eg. similar to BMW's suggested oil change intervals). If you're a real enthusiast, and are changing the oil far more frequently (eg. twice a year, or every few thousand miles), you really won't notice much difference between the different specifications, as things like the SAPS levels and viscosity are still going to be within acceptable ranges at the time of oil change. You'll find most areas with higher sulfur content fuels (eg. US; Australia) will recommend along the lines of LL-01 or LL-01 FE (higher SAPS) for petrol engines, while in European countries with stricter fuel quality (lower sulfur), you'll find BMW recommends LL-04 (low SAPS) even for petrol engines. That being said, I don't suggest people go buy some nasty cheap oil. As for the weight of oil you've chosen... given the application, a 0W30 or 5W30 would likely be a better fit if you're planning to push the new motor a little harder than stock. The 0W20 will give marginally better fuel economy, but the 0W30 will give you more headroom when you're running higher boost and ultimately higher engine oil temps (ie. viscosity drops). Case in point - I run 0W40 or 5W40 in my N54, as in the summer we have temperatures in the 40+ celsius (104+ F), such that the higher oil temperatures I see compared to cooler regions of the world means the effective viscosity of my 40 weight oil is actually closer to a 30 weight during running conditions. Our B48 gets 0W30.

I am pretty sure Kies and FCP Euro have done ZF 8-Speed Auto Transmission Fluid Change videos. - You need a new plastic ZF pan, since the filter is built into the pan. And order new bolts. Go OE ZF. - Use ZF fluid - You have to pump the fluid into the side of the ZF transmission.. - Top off the fluid at a certain temp, so you need to run the engine and read the A/T temp with a scanner.

With oil in the charge pipe, would that not indicate the turbo burst and leaked into the intake first. Increased temperatures from burning the oil with the fuel caused the piston ring and valve to fail? Looking at B58 teardowns, they are made for tuning and taking lots of HP on stock internals. The turbo being the weak point makes the most sense.

Hi , i have a 330e f30 and it has this grinding noise whenever it is on the "Save" mode (petrol and idling. do you know what is the cause of it? the noise doesn't come on whilst driving fast and not coming up when it is using electric

@@gxp99 that is not what happened what so ever, 90% piston ring failure. When that happens, it allows oil to BLOW by the piston and get into ur Intake, charge pipes, intercooler, turbo, etc.

@@ST.G8x even if that’s the case I personally never heard of only 1 ring failing like that. That’s a premature failure on a pretty low mileage bmw ma boi so no one will now unless they fully tear it apart which would be a learning process for both us and them.

Once there is a little metal in the oil, stop, and pull the motor. It does not get better by looking at the oil filter.

Random question, I recently brought my car in for some maintenance and my shop noticed the oil filter housing gasket on my 2014 428i xDrive was leaking. After getting it replaced the next day my car went limp and was told the engine needed to be replaced. This has to be the garage's fault right? They're tiptoeing around it saying they dont know what went wrong but now I'm out almost 8k getting a used engine replacement. What would you recommend in this situation?! Any help would be appreciated @Kies Motorsports

I forgot who did the work but thic whips’ B58 failed back in February and they pulled and put a new one in and that job is probably still kind of fresh in their minds so you could probably ask for guidance from them

Had a similar issue with mine but not as detrimental. I believe their was a tear in my pvc so at first my rpms started rising at idle out of nowhere then black smoke came out of the exhaust then turned to white smoke had it towed to bmw they said the had to replace the head Also I believe he charge pipe had oil and the spark plugs I believe one more thing but I forgot … apparently the problem I had was cause to excessive idling which I had no idea coming from an si my 340 is my first turbo car .. just something to be careful of if anyone else might have an issue like mine

Seems like I’m not the only one wondering what exactly happened to the B58 engine. All I’ve heard was how reliable and bulletproof they are. Did Gary push the car all the time? What were his engine oil change intervals? Any bolt ons? Pretty important info to avoid this type of issue.

I've seen too many of these videos at this point. I think the B58 will have the same curse as the N54 and it will be worse for owners because the B58 supply will be half of the N54 production. It sucks but I'm calling it now

Valve cover pcv probably took a dump and let oil all in the chargepipe into the top of the pistons. Happened to me. Missfire was probably from oil covering plugs. Bet engjne was good

maybe the oil is from PCV fouling the spark plug? Or it is actually fuel from leaky injector? Could have at least checked all other cylinders and maybe do a compression and/or leak down test.

Looking to purchase a 540I with the B58. Did a ton of research on these engines and also would like to know what failed. Saw another video on KZbin with a B58 in a 340I and engine was replaced under warranty with 7,000 miles on it.

You probably have metal shavings in the oil cooler. Attempting to clean it out is typically a fail. Should do another oil change right away. Could have saved your Ceratec for the 2nd oil.

In the UK the B58 has a reputation for being very reliable when looked after properly. They tend to blow engines when run on poor/high ethanol fuel and when badly mapped. The injectors fail which causes more wash then bore and piston damage, I bet that has happened here...

Crazy blow-by because of a failed ring. The noise is the piston slapping the cyliner wall.

The b58 acts a bit different. These cars get almost no blowby, obviously that doesn't cover blown motors like his lol.

🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷👏🏻, So much work wasn't it, but the result was worth while I guess. Are there problems with these older B58 engines? And not the B58TU? BMW's B58 engine received quite a few important technical updates beginning in 2018. The new variant is dubbed the B58TU1. It is also available in "ML" and "OL" versions. ML represents the "middle output" 335hp version, while OL is the "high output" 382hp engine. Given the B58 is still a new engine, only time will tell how much of an impact the revisions have.

Engine just blow up sometimes! Plenty of other capable engines have blown up like 2JZs Audi 5 cylinders, EA888s when tuned, the B58 isn't the only one!
