Another way to look at it would be all 1st gen b58 came in the f30 chassis (2016-2018), and the b58TU or 2nd gen b58 comes on the new g20 chassis m340i (2020-present) as well as mk5 Supra.

If you are talking only for the 3 series then you are right. Just to be clear the 1st gen B58 can be found in 1 series, 2 series, 4 series, 5 series, 6 series, 7 series, X3, X4, etc. The B58TU can also be found in many cars in the BMW range.

@@hefnerdon7462 Hi there, there's a carwow video of Supra vs M440i (which is similar to M340i), and the M440i generally beats the Supra except for the last rolling race where they stay even. Probably that Supra in the carwow video was fitted with the B58B30M1 (B58B30C) variant whereas the M440i obviously had the B58B30O1 variant. It might be different story for the latest Supra with B58B30O1 engine. However on a track my humble opinion is that any Supra is likely to be the best combination for performance, as both engine and chassis are tuned by Toyota for sporty driving. The M340i is likely to be very close but due to being a family saloon, BMW will build into it more practicality and comfort than the Supra (the BMW is certainly 200kg heavier). The Supra can't be as practical as the M340i no matter what the engineers do with it. The latest Supra with the high power B58 (B58B30O1 / B58B30B) further tuned by Toyota, is a weapon for sure. So the best performing B58 sports car is likely to be the 2021 Supra in my very humble opinion.

Right, the B58B30C is not unique to the supra. I work at BMW manufacturing in the U.S and we have been installing the B58C in the X5 and X6 vehicles since before the supra ever came out also x3 and x4 now. What I thought was interesting though is that the B58C only comes in the SUVs in the BMW lineup. The new z4 and supra are mechanical twins almost. That made it interesting that the z4 came out with the B58B30B and the supra with lower powered B58B30C typically used by BMW in SUVs. Now of course as of 2021 and up, the supra also has the B58B30B. keep a look out for the B58N but that's all I can say about that.;-)

There is another version of B58 which is B58B30C placed in X5 45e, PHEV, matched with motorized ZF transmission. That was de-tuned. Power is down from 340hp to 280 in order to increase reliability.

Hello, the B58B30C in the X5 45e is a pretty standard B58B30C so I wouldn't say it's a different version. However you are correct the output is reduced, and the car relies on the electric motor for around 100hp. The B58B30C in the X5 45e should be capable of producing the standard horsepower as seen in other models, so the car should be an absolute beast with a stage 2 tune. I'm not sure how the combined power output of the two powerplants is managed, so perhaps there are other limitations preventing such power gains.

@@livinglegacy8429 Technology can get better with time, but increased complexity and over-engineering can sometimes reduce quality, robustness and reliability. In my very humble opinion, the original B58 engine is one of the best modular engine designs (available in cars both affordable and very expensive, driven by all kinds of drivers, etc), which has become slightly messier with the TU1 (2nd gen) iterations. That's not to say that the TU1 versions are not good: they should be better as they are building on an already excellent design, however the 2-port version and 6-port version have different draw-backs compared to the 1st gen, so it's not a clear cut step up. Now there is the 3rd gen (TU2) engine, which has increased in complexity significantly, and is currently found in more expensive cars (i.e. generally likely driven less, and more gently, by older/more mature drivers), so it hasn't proven itself yet. For me, the 1st gen remains the best engine, the engine driven and tested by most drivers, the engine pushed to the limits more than the others by tuners, the engine which is simplest and cheapest to replace if things go wrong, etc. Again, just my very humble opinion, which some will say is totally wrong and that's OK...

Hi there, first the easy question: Yes, the 2020 Supra is fitted with a variant C (B58B30M1) engine and the 2021 Supra is fitted with a variant B (B58B30O1) engine. Now the difficult question, but starting from an easy point: The cylinder head of the B58B30M1 is aluminium. Now to the hard part: The cylinder head design of the B58B30O1 is more similar to the B58B30M0 in that it retains the traditional exhaust manifold and traditional turbocharger. However, the Part Number of the cylinder head is different for all three variants (P/N 11128482779 for B58B30A, 11127934495 for B58B30B and 11127934494 for B58B30C). The Turbochargers are also three different P/Ns for the three variants. This means that although the basic cylinder head design is retained between variants B58B30A and B58B30B, as the Part Number of cylinder head and turbo charger has changed we cannot say for sure that the materials used are the same. So in short I cannot confirm with certainty what material the cylinder head of a B58B30O1 / B58B30B engine is made from. The fact that the B58TU cylinder head P/Ns are so close (11127934495 for B58B30B and 11127934494 for B58B30C) personally makes me believe that they are both aluminium, which makes more sense as the B58TU has some weight saving modifications (and of course I could be completely mistaken).

Well, it's not going to be a 1st Gen B58 as those are out of production, so it will be a B58TU. I feel it's unlikely that the most powerful version of the engine as used in M340i or Z4 or the latest Supra will be used in an off-roader, so my guess is that it will be the B58B30C (i.e. B58B30M1) version. Just a pure guess. :)

Many of the B58TU improvements are related to reducing emissions, which are important, but have added some additional complexity to the engine (different potential issues and unknowns). At the same time enhancements have been made to the internals so that the engine can cope with more power. I don't think the word "inferior" can really be used for the 1st Gen, because it is a really capable and efficient engine. However the M1 (C) and O1 (B) variants are further developed versions that until now are proving to be just as impressive as the 1st Gen.

The F series only had 1st gen B58, whereas the G series have 2nd gen B58 (and now very recently 3rd gen B58). The same principle applies, early production 2nd gen B58 will have issues that will be sorted in later production.

Hello, the B58B30C (or B58B30M1) is almost identical to the B58B30B (B58B30O1), except that the cylinder head of the B58C has an integrated exhaust manifold, whereas the B58B retains the same type of exhaust manifold at the B58A. The exhaust manifold is what takes the hot gases from the cylinders (after fuel combustion) to the turbocharger turbine section. In the B58B and B58A the exhaust manifold is outside the cylinder head, in the B58C the exhaust manifold is part of the cylinder head itself. The reason that the B58C has this feature is so that the hot exhaust gases are used to warm-up the engine cylinder head faster , and a warmer engine means a more fuel efficient engine. More fuel efficiency means less emissions. So this was done purely to reduce emissions of the B58C compared to the B58A and B58B. However, as the B58C has been made artificially warmer even though its cooling system is identical to the B58B, it also means that it can reach temperature limits faster in heavy operation conditions. The ECU is monitoring the engine temperature (through e.g. the component temperature sensor and coolant temperature sensor) and as soon as the ECU detects or projects that the safe limits are exceeded, the ECU will reduce engine power to maintain safe operation. In other words, the B58C and B58B are likely able to be tuned to the same power output (they have the same components except the cylinder head and beyond), but in heavy operating conditions the B58C is likely to reduce power faster than the B58B as it gets hotter, to protect itself from overheating. This is just my humble opinion. :)

Just like the 1st gen B58, the B58TU design seems to be easily capable of more power than stock. I believe the only difference will be how quickly the B58C reaches excessive temperatures (compared to B58A and B58B), but that should really not be a problem outside a race track.

But I do plan to travel and push it on straights and in the mountains every once in awhile. I might look into cooling solutions and possibly aftermarket bolt on parts like intercooler to help keep the car at low temps and heatsoak. (If you have any recommendations) Is it the engine or the manifold the components overheating?

@@kevin22duong-_- It's all connected, if the engine block or turbo heats up inside the engine bay, it will heat up pretty much everything around it. Measures to keep engine temperatures down include cooler air coming into the air intake muffler box from outside the engine bay (in the case of the 1st gen B58 this is called the "hot climate mod", opening up any blanks to allow cooler air into the engine bay (sometimes blanks are found behind the kidney grilles at the sides) but I would hesitate to do this personally without a grille protecting the opening, replacement intercooler radiator/heat exchanger as you said, checking coolant is at the correct levels at both the expansion tanks, that kind of thing.

Hi, the oil consumption of your 2021 M340i is technically within limits but I would agree that it is not usual experience for the B58 family in general. You do have the B58B30O1 and a higher level of oil consumption has been reported for this engine, so you are probably experiencing "normal" oil consumption for your engine type. The root cause has not been established as far as I know but this engine does have different pistons that the B58B30M1 (I will make a new video soon to explain) and there is alot of discussion on the oil consumption issue being the result of running in the engine. It would make sense that different pistons and maybe piston rings, combined with maybe more boost to accomplish the higher power, might result in different running in behaviour between B58B30M1 and B58B30O1 and this might explain why the oil consumption can increase on B58B30O1. I intend to research this further and make a video comparison soon.

Hi, the 1st gen B58 was mated with a manual gearbox on some models, the ZF8 was an option. The B58TU is only available with ZF8 but Toyota is soon releasing the Supra with 6-speed manual option. So it's possible BMWs will have the option again soon.
