London taxi fares are consulted on each year. Whilst this is one of the largest meter increases seen in a long time, is it enough in the current climate?

Train driver here, totally agree with your sentiments. Theres a lot of headlines saying how greedy train drivers are demanding the world, but the reality is, im effectively on a 14% ish pay cut since my last pay rise. My headline wage is quite good, yes, but because I'm on a decent wage i bought a slightly nicer house (upon request of my family) we bought the first new car we've ever had, all things that are good for the economy, then the cost of all the things around that spiraled, remortgage time came and interest rates definitely aren't what they used to be. My spending power is probably half what it used to be, this cant be good for local small businesses, only aldi and lidl etc. Good luck to everyone with regards to getting a pay rise! Remember, both labour and the conservatives voted for THEIR payrises in the depths of covid whilst the rest of us worked, remember that most of the big companies have been recording record profits whilst we're punished! I don't believe there is anything wrong with profits, but don't take the piss. And the government should consider that payrises aren't necessarily a bad thing, remember to every NHS staff member they give a payrise, almost half of that will come back to the government in form of income tax/national insurance, then everything that person spends gets a 20% tax on it, more if its cigs and booze.

Agree with everything you said here however I believe its most jobs that are experiencing real terms pay cuts recently, and even not so recently. I believe the public sentiment is more negative towards train drivers becuase those lower paying jobs (eg. carers or healthcare assistants) feel it more because they weren't on a comfortable amount to start with. It doesn't invalidate the others who are taking a pay cut because their quality of life is still going down, but the focus should rightly be on those who are in more vulnerable positions financially (who are very close to minimum wage or at minimum wage) because they feel things. You might not be able to afford a new car, but for some it means they cant afford the Electricity or food. Defintely a bit of a tough situation, as the only gain from times like this are from politicians and big companies, I think we should be in solidarity accross paygrades but the sentiment is negative because the media is causing division on purpose, divide and conquer as per usual, and of course it is those with a level of education who are easily fooled.

in Indonesia ( including Bali) the taxi meter rates haven't kept up with inflation and are too low for the market so cabbies just refuse to use the meter - they quote a fare before you get in and you take it or leave it. "sorry boss, meter not working" if you ask to use the meter before getting in. i hope london never gets shitty like that. i think our cabbies are too professional to act like that and the meter isnt out of line with inflation.

Low traffic neighborhoods have been shown to cut crime significantly and pollution, improve health (physical and mental) and improve social cohesion. The traffic congestion does not substantially increase on surrounding roads because people decide that it is no longer worth it to drive and they thus stop driving in the area so much, which in turn makes the areas more pleasant and helps local businesses, too.

@@itsdougslife, The vehicles licensed to ply for hire in London are not subject to the London Taxi Cost Index, therefore, the rising costs which Tom adequately explains are not added to the cost index and therefore have no effect on the fares charged. Why this is I don't know, but I am reliably informed that national figures are used. 46% of London taxis are LEVC vehicles and their costs are rising as Tom has explained. The costs used for the TCI were taken in May 2022 so will be 12 months in arrears by the time the tariff starts. If Tom would like to give me his contact details I can forward the tariff information to him.

2:56 How does this "minimum fare" business work? When you turn on the meter, does it start counting immediately from £3.80? In that case, wouldn't it be better to call it a "starting price" instead? The taxi company that I work for has a starting price of 4.95€ from 6AM to 6PM on weekdays (8.95€ at other times) AND a minimum fare of 10€. For example, if the meter has counted up to 7.65€ at the destination, the fare will jump to 10€ when the meter is turned off. This way every fare is at least 10€.

London cab drivers are competing for many of their fares against the tube and buses. As that improves (the addition of the Elizabeth line for example) life for taxi drivers gets harder and harder. Each time that happens the pool of people using taxis polarizes more and more to business people (who can expense the ride) and tourist who are less aware of the transport options. Another problem is that if black cab numbers decline, they become harder to find and people use other alternatives. In reality cab drivers need traffic reduced in London so that cabs can move more easily and efficiently. However finding a cab driver who supports the Mayor of London’s efforts to do that isn’t easy.

I might be a personal assistant, and occasionally, I'm someone that knows when to keep quiet. I'm a helper to the physically less able, and I'll wait while someone vulnerable gets into their house and waves to show they're home and safe. It's about customer awareness and service, and most of the time, I'm trying to do that. Many drivers would deserve a tip for suggesting a better route for a customer when heavy traffic would delay them. I've searched cheaper alternatives when people have a long journey to make and have missed a train. Both of these would mean I would get paid a lot more if I just stuck to the route expected, and in foregoing that, maybe enough to get a drink is a bargain for the customer. Some tip. Some don't. But good service has never been a reason to stop using that cabbie, whereas bad service often is.

Bus fares shouldn't go up, because Londoners can't afford it. But taxi fares must go up, because... And picking out Pret with 19 %. How about nurses with 5 %? 7,6 % is pretty much the average for the whole country, across all of the private sector. I don't see how cabbies are getting a worse deal than pretty much all the rest of us.

Wish I'd been offered a chance to "recoup my losses" from the pandemic. Jesus. Wish I had any pay rise resulting out of the cost of living crisis. Tube, NHS, Royal Mail... down tools and get action. Lucky them. Sympathy low on this one I'm afraid. We're all struggling.

Difference is the tools and costs to complete my job are going up. Unlike pret, restaurants or other self employed people, I can’t raise my prices. Only bow down to what the meter says.

@@TomtheTaxiDriver I get that mate. My argument isn't really with you - more the strikers who seem to think a pay rise (with no noticeable increase in cost of work) is something owed to them. And I think Pret is an outlier, although their honey granola pot is an absolute winner. Ultimately it's all supply and demand innit, and the market will find its price in the private sector.

@@aldhous ‘no noticeable increase in the cost of work’… so petrol, train fares, food, clothing, energy haven’t gone through the roof? Really struggling to understand where you’re coming from here. Out of interest, what industry are you in where you cannot recoup your costs or expect any kind of pay rise to keep your living standards in line with where they were before

@@miniaturesteamnick Name me the increase in the cost of being able to work (not the cost of living) for a tube train driver. You're missing the point anyway - in a recession or economic downturn, if a wage keeps up with inflation it's a privilege, not a right.

@@TomtheTaxiDriver Try a food intolerance test which checks immunoglobulin G (igG) response against numerous food allergens. I had one in 2015 (Lorisian Laboratories which tested 150 allergens) via a qualified nutritionist and the results were very revealing and more systematic than hit-or-miss dietary elimination. This could be a reaction to something you're eating.
