Lets talk about Derik decision and what he did wrong that might have helped him continue on his path of becoming a Bass Pro Tour angler. It's not only about catching fish, but the BRAND that you portray to the fans and audience.

It's the fishing industry as a whole. They have made it completely unaffordable for the average angler. And there are a lot of great anglers that just can't afford it. It's sad......$5k graphs.....motors are $25k.....trolling motors are $5k. Give me a break. I used to love fishing local tournaments but the price of everything has pushed me away. I just fish for fun now.

Yeah, when trolling motors cost $4-5 thousand, and electronics cost thousands and thousands, they have screwed the pooch. These business sales are supported mainly by it by average and weekend anglers, not the Pros… and they’ve lost that market

Yep, too expensive for me. I bought a trolling motor not long ago, big name brand, it cost over $3500 and the spotlock quit working after 2 years, it sucks up weeds to the point where I should charge lakeside homeowners for weed removal. The $5000 graph would work better if I could afford the harness and dedicated battery for electronics. Don't get me started about the cost of batteries🙄. Used to fish lots of tournaments on the Great Lakes and did well, retired, moved to Florida and now I just fish for fun. It's a rich person's game now, no longer for the average angler.

I read a comment recently that tournament angling isn’t a sport, it’s gambling. Your entire assemblage of gear is your ante, and most risk it all for the chance to make a few hundred grand over a career. There are way more losers than winners and the “house” (the league, the fishing corporations) are the only guaranteed winners. I’ve followed tournament fishing since the early 90’s and it never dawned on me that this is what’s going on. But it’s true.

The #1 thing about a 'Luxury Sport' such as bass fishing , . . . it's entirely economy dependent. But #2 is the 'industry' as a whole has completely cannibalized itself. Sadly they've 'legitimized' social media platforms by putting such a strong emphasis IE marketing / and sponsorship dollars there . . . dividing the pie to snack size bites where no one benefits. Gone are the days where a touring angler can simply devote his or focus on the job of catching bass, show up for some seminars, and write a few articles over the course of the season. Now they have to be a 'traveling circus act' and pretend to be some 'video star' making shorts that have already been made a thousand times over. I know tournament bass fishing has always been a bit of a struggle . . . . but I've never seen it circling the drain as much as it is now.

A couple of points I want to make. First of all sponsorship money is hard to get and keep. This I feel is largely due to the playing field being completely leveled. The top anglers are the ones that drop the foward facing sonar transducer on the right group of fish. This could be a rookie or a seasoned pro angler. Anyone can win. Companies have to find it hard to sponsor anglers the place 3rd one week and 80th the next. Im certainly not taking anything away from any angler but this has to be frustrating a well known and seasoned angler to lock onto a group of fish in practice and get whooped by a 19 year old that found better fish on a transducer just across the lake. Who gets the money when the best angler this week is 80th next week and 100th the week after that. The anglers are being taken advantage of fully. Companies are pushing them to have youtube channels as well as social medias, only to give Companies free advertising. The elites should not be paying entrie fees period. They earned their way there just as PGA pros, NLB pros etc... Back off on the technology, smaller tournament participants. Cut the field down. Break up B.A.S.S and the MLF. Spread out tournaments into divisions. What happen to tournaments on California delta? Pro anglers stay in their divisions based on where they live. Things have to change. The pro anglers are severely taken advantage of by B.A.S.S , MLF, tech companies and lure,reel and rod manufacturers. Its a complete mess. Whose making all the money? Its not the anglers and its certainly not those of us on lower levels. We are just left with the bill.

Let me say right now, this is one of the best, well thought out comment's I've EVER HAD ON THIS CHANNEL. I can not agree more with you. Couple little insights.... California Delta.... few years back they had something on the schedule to go West and the anglers didn't like it and they had to change it. To far, to much money etc etc etc. I do think their could be some changes soon in terms of organizations, FFS and more, but they need to make it a sport more than a PAYING HOBBY. Again AMAZING comment. I don't give hearts out but once in a blue moon and your getting one. Cheers and tight lines!!

Social media should be their side hustle, but they need to work on it. The money is drying up these days, from what I can see and tell. It's still strong, but you have to be able to show it's worth the companies marketing budget. Thanks for the comment. Cheers and tight lines!!

Is the person making $$ - do they get TV time? Not everybody does and its hard to justify sponsor $$ if you are not. Having a KZbin channel that has a lot of subs and fun content also helps spread your brand. Some guys are really not ready for the big leagues after having tried it. We'll have to see how this impacts the first round of cuts - guys who want to leave should say early enough so that bubble boys are in if they want to try the 2024 BPT

Love this, and your right. If your not in the hunt for the win, your not getting TV TIME. Getting subs is hard, well for me it is anyways. Cheers and tight lines!!

I'm not here to bash you but your giving bad advice. Social media and tournament fishing are to different jobs. If your struggling to place in tournaments . Social media not going to make you a better fisherman. And when are you going to find time to concentrate on both. It's not the finance that's the problem. The problem is everybody who fishes as a pro thinks he has what it takes . And that's just not true. If everybody could make a living at fishing we wouldn't have enough tournaments or big enough tournaments for everybody now.
@GetUrFishOn
@GetUrFishOn Ай бұрын
No bashing and thanks for the comment. While it is two different jobs, when you are paying to play, and your a pro angler and marketing angler, social media must go hand and hand. They don't 'need' to do it, but they all admit, it's something they 'must' do to help sponsors recoup the funds they shell out for sponsorships. It's unfortunate, but it's the way the industry is right now. Again thanks for the comment and knowledge. Cheers and tight lines!!

Pro fishing has fallen off my radar as well. I do watch just a few particular anglers on youtube, but not bass fishing as KZbin, It's become a joke at this point. And now ffs has exposed the entire industry. Now it's hard for even angler to lie sell the lures anymore

Why don't you just tell it like it is. You have to WIN before you can sell yourself. And the reason people are struggling financially is simple, they are not winning. Until they do, they are going to live in the minor leagues of the bass fishing world.
