My brain is tired of researching. I just finished my turntable build. I'm really confused with something. Currently I'm going against what research is saying shouldn't sound good. I have a MP-110 on a low mass tonearm (ADC LMF-2 Tonearm) researchers are saying it's a mix match and you will not hear good bass. However, my sound and bass is amazing. Is this a myth?

Dear Mark!!! Yes :-D ... regarding the subject on Tonearm-Cartridge matching: Most important points, most important factors are…. SO MANY!!! The cartridge engine, internal wiring, shielding, magnetic flux densities, control, wiring angles, wiring workmanship, and the tonearm tube material, shaping externally and internally, wiring, bearing quality. If calculated compliance deducing tonearm-cartridge matching is so important, why is it that the same cartridge can sound SO DIFFERENT with different tonearms with the same gimballed/unipivot design and same tonearm effective masses? IT IS because different tonearms have different qualities of build, different materials, different tapering designs that can reduce hugely tonearm resonances (outcome totally different from our grossly calculated Rf), different shielding, different manufacturing repeatability and integrity, different tonearm base wiring quality, connection and workmanship, THAT ALL affects the cartridge’s performance :-DWe elucidate more:A) the SAME TONEARM playing TWO DIFFERENT cartridges can sound so different despite both cartridges having the same compliance figures! ProJect fans say that Ortofon cartridges have compliances figures that match their low-effective-mass-ProJect-tonearms rather than Technics SL1200 tonearms. BUT THE TRUTH is here: how come the $100 Ortofon 2M Red, which is supposedly a much better cartridge than the ubiquitously distributed and heavily mass-produced $30 AT-3600 series cartridge, actually sounds SO bad when matched with the ProJect Debut Carbon (9g tonearm), so much worse, than a $30 AT-3600 cartridge installed on the Rega Planar 1? B) AND also, the 2M Red on the Technics SL1200Mk2/3/5 (medium-high mass tonearm) sounds so much better THAN the AT-3600, AT-95e WITH the Technics SL1200Mk2/3/5! The 2M Red also sounds better installed on a P1 than installed on the ProJect Debut Carbon. Compliance matching is but a small factor amongst SO MANY HUGE DECISIVE FACTORS. Compliance is but a small matter in the overall performance of a cartridge. Let us say that a cartridge is matched very well with a tonearm to effect in a Resonant Frequency of 9-11Hz, but yet the tonearm bearings are poor:- case 1: rough (not smooth) action of tonearm, resulting in compliance issues being thrown out of the window, as a tonearm with unsmooth action, is likened to a heavy ponderous tonearm with "high effective mass", - case 2: poor bearings tolerance that result in FREE PLAY, and that EQUALS TO SLIPPAGE of the stylus (during actual music play) in 10-20microns across and within the groove modulations, which again, THROW compliance matching out of the window!!!!, and such free play and slippage results in loss of fidelity and is MUCH worse than any compliance (calculated) mismatch issues. My friends and I, have all the thesis and papers from magazines discussing compliance but we all threw them away in the end. They proved to be not worth exploring and calculating to the extremes like a religion. There are many more huge, factors involved in the sound quality of the system :-D…and slippage/freeplay of the tonearm bearings during actual music play will throw all the calculated figures out of the window. :-D We will be wiser using our ears always.Warmest Regards Buddy Mark :-D!! p.p1 {margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 12.0px 'Helvetica Neue'; color: #454545} p.p2 {margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 12.0px 'Helvetica Neue'; color: #454545; min-height: 14.0px}

@@HiViNywschannel thank you for your response. Your very smart. I'll be doing a video on this and I'm basicly going to say your best to match what your ears like. I hope I'm not wrong in saying that. I'm sure alot of people are going to leave negative comments. Lol

Dear Mark, yes.... we have to always stick our heads out to say the right things. They may not go down well with a certain sector of people who are dogmatic and idiosyncratic in our hobby... but Brother Mark, i think that people who are vinyl users, would mostly be people who are warmer and places people above music, music above calculations and 1s and 0s :-D.... thus yes, although you may encounter some comments, you know that the silent majority will stand by you. You can quote my message above too, if you deem fit. My friends and i use our ears, that formula to calculate Rf, is just but a small factor really, in the end, taking into account SO MANY factors that influence sound quality and fidelity of audio reproduction :-). I have your back, go ahead my friend. Warmest Regards, and May the Force be with You, ~ ian.

Brother, we shall see how a stock P3 performs against a stock Technics SL1200Mk5 very soon!! I am currently doing the auditions with the MP-200 cart, and will soon move onto utilizing the Goldrring 1042 for the auditions (after the 1042 has been thoroughly runned-in). :-D I can't wait to know and discover!!!!! You've blown my cover, Ian! Over the last 26 years I've used over a dozen different cartridges but I always seem to be drawn back to my 1042. It's a bit like the first girlfriend - You never forget. I'll say no more until you produce the next shoot-off. It's going to be epic. I've never used or even heard a Rega deck before so I await eagerly. Once again, many thanks for your help and advice for us addicts. It is hugely appreciated by the vinyl community.

Good morning Ian, Always a pleasure spending some time with you and enjoying the ride to the Adelphi Mall. That Avid turntable that they have on display looks to be a nice one. Also the Technics Reel To Reel at the 7:00 mark is beautiful. I cannot wait to see the Rega P3 vs the Technics 1200 Mk5. I have a new 1200 that I will be picking up in December. Long story but I finally found one that will replace the one that I ended up giving to my brother. I am sure that with your incredible knowledge of all things audio you could have fixed it. But it was really bugging me. So I gave it away and tracked down another one. Thanks again for taking us along with you to Coherence Audio to pick up the new cartridge. You were very happy when you got it in your hands. I was smiling also and very happy for you. Have a nice week and I am definitely looking forward to sharing some more time with you in the next video. Talk to you soon Brother Ian~ Rob/Boston

HiViNyws channel That’s a very interesting comment. My cart collection at the moment is: Goldring 1042, Nagaoka MP-11 Boron (an eBay used purchase) and AT95E. Turntable is a Technics SL-1210GR, with a choice of Gram Amp II (which I rate higher than you do) or Schiit Mani. I buy quite a lot of used vinyl, so having the choice of carts is helpful. The Nagaoka is usually best with worn vinyl. The Goldring is only for albums that were bought new.

Hi Ian! First of all, let me congratulate and thank you so much for all the great research you have done and are doing. Your work and videos have made it possible for many of us to get great results with vinyl, after so much frustration and wasted money it really is a breath of fresh air! Thanks to you I have been happily using a Goldring 1006....but as many of us, I have also got the upgraditis lol!! I'm thinking of selling my 1006 stylus and upgrading to the 1042, and this would cost me an extra €100. At the same time, I have been testing a Nagaoka MP30 (NOS) and I find it very refined. Certainly a better cartridge than the 1006, particularly for jazz, classical and acoustic music. I can buy this MP30 for €250, but I have to make a choice: either I upgrade the Goldring to the 1042 or I get the MP30, but I can't afford both. Since you have had the 1042 for a while now, do you think it is at least on par with the Nagaoka MP200? And what would you do in my place? Also keep in mind that the MP30 can be upgraded in the future to the MP500 by simply buying the JP500, and from Japan it's not as expensive as it is when buying within Europe...please let me know your thoughts asap, as I have to make this decision within the next 4 days. Thanks and best wishes to you and your family! Roberto

Coz it was my very intention to give you guys a treat and having a look at part of the track, the one drive past before the City Hall building in daylight :-D... I am happy to see you and other friends' messages that you guys are delighted to see it. About month ago, buddy, you asked about the "There's A Time" vinyl album by Doug MacLeod. Gosh you are right....it is still out of stock and awaiting repress. I have just checked musicdirect and it is out of stock as well. Apologies Brother. I really hope it comes through soon. I am sure it will be repressed and the good stocks will be out, as it had happened about a year or two ago too, and it did receive a repress. Warmest Regards my friend :-D great to see you.

Hi Ian, thanks for another super video, especially showing the behind the scenes of the organisation of the F1 GrandPrix. I got the notification of your latest video yesterday but was so engrossed in watching the race live that can only manage watching it now :P I hope to watch this particular race live in Singapore hopefully sometime in the near future, before which will most certainly meet you in person. It was fun window shopping with you as well. Look forward to more such window shopping videos in future from you. PS: My friend just bought 2 Revox RTR's from Germany recently. Am looking forward to hearing the tapes along with his Brinkmann Audio Integrated Amp & Bardo Turntable. Thanks once again :)

Oooooh.... Revox RTRs!!! I almost got one but decided to drop it because of the rather much hassle with (hardware) maintaining a tape deck: azimuth, etc, etc, etc... and (software) tape wear that sets in within 200 plays, and that music material is limited, and good audiophile ones are too expensive... :-D of course i will give cheers to anybody going the RTR route and we need people willing and able to go that route to preserve this analogue playback artform :-D Kudos to them. Brinkmann Bardo TT and amp?! You have a lot to feast your eyes and ears upon!!! Yes Brother, if you are in Singapore next F1 GP in 2019, let me know, i will meet up with you :-D! Best Regards Buddy!

I live in such a rural area that I am very literally stunned by how much you have available in Singapore! Beautiful place, very clean and modernized. I had to drive 3 hours to buy a Rega P1 from a less than reputable dealer because it was my only shot to buy one at a fair price haha. Very excited for the turntable shootout. I about had the Sl-1200 mk5 but it sold before payday, very sad about that but if I am lucky I might get an M3D for the same price as long as it doesn't sell before Friday. Every time a good Technics deck appears I am halfway between paychecks but I can't complain, as a young civil engineer I don't know many other people my age who can even think about buying turntables.

I am using this as my primary cartridge right now. I found it had a long break in period (stiff suspension) and that it works better (verified with a test record) closer to 2g VTF than the manufacturer's stated nominal 1.75g. Additionally, the output of the cartridge is high and it optimally needs something like 34db of gain. Depending on what records you are playing you may have trouble with it if your phono preamp has more gain than that.

How neat to see city streets being turned into a racetrack! These kind of stores are just non-existent anymore here in the States - even in the big cities... very neat to see this gear in a retail environment, Ian. I am excited to see the turntable shootout - I predict there won’t be a huge difference, despite the legendary love for the 1200.

The update I gave on the Spatial M3 TM in your last video still holds. I will say that the trial period is up in a little over two weeks and I do not think there is anyway I can go back to my old Paradigms. I have been buying so much new music lately that my wife had to do an intervention and ask me to slow down a little bit. It is really a testament to how much I am enjoying music with the Spatials. Especially classical music which was the weakest part of my old speakers. There are many speakers that just do not satisfy when it comes to classical music or acoustically recorded music in general. Spatials satisfy with classic so much I find that I am listening to it more than ever. That said they still do great with rock and jazz. Played a reissue LP of Pink Floyd Wish You Were Here and it had a 3D soundstage like I have never heard before with Floyd. The only exception would be a pair of very large and pricey Martin Logan electrostats I once heard which also sounded open and 3D with Floyd. Will keep you posted and let you know how the Spatial room sounds at RMAF2018.

Hello Ian:Thanks for the video. That is a very impressive audio mall to walk through, looking at MBL and Avant Garde speakers through the windows; would love to see this as well. Its getting harder and harder to find independent high end stores in the US and basically impossible to find anything like this. On a separate note; may I suggest a recording for listening pleasure or testing (if you haven't already heard of it). Its called Die Rohre ("the tube" in German). All recording and mastering is done on analog/tube equipment. The sound is simply amazing. Available on Amazon.

Hi Ian - hello to you fellow vinyl fanatic! I love all your reviews and off the back of them have purchased a Goldring 1006 to fit on my Rega P2 - I really love it! I'm really looking forward to your review of the 1042 (and possibly with some thoughts regarding the 1022GX?) as I plan at some point to fit an upgraded stylus. I'm also interested in whether you think the Schiit Mani would be a better phone pre than the one in my new Cyrus One amp...? Happy listening!
@HiViNywschannel
@HiViNywschannel 6 жыл бұрын
Dear Buddy!!! Heh yes!!! The 1022, the 1006....the 1042!! I have just finished intensively running in the 1042 over a week...and i must say yes it is a brilliant cart indeed!!! Especially if you are staying in the U.K. where the prices of Goldring carts are the cheapest (by a long mile) than the rest of the world where we have it. Your 1006 body is the same as the 1022 and the 1042, and hence once your stylus/cantilever wears out...you can easily get a superb upgrade with the 42 stylus or 22 stylus... Brother, I have not heard the Cyrus One phonocircuit...but I am confident the Mani would beat it. If one factor in the fact that schiit sells direct, and that if the Mani had not been sold direct from manufacturer to customers online, the Mani would be marked up 2-3 times to pay for the stocking fee in the distributor/retailer from various countries, plus to pay for the retailer's profits, plus to pay for the retailer's shop staff salaries, plus to pay for the retailer's rental fee for his shop space. The Mani would hence easily cost a US$600 if sold through the "normal" business route. In any case, one friend called "Saul Hyman" had concurred with me too, and had written his comments, that his Mani, beats his Lehmann Black Cube SE2 (US$1,100) phonostage. His message was posted on my chief Schiit Mani review :-D Happy listening to brother!!! Thank you for your kindest comments and words of support!! ENJOY YOUR P2 + 1006!!!!!

I feel honoured my brother with your reply! Thanks for your wisdom - Schiit Mani has been out of stock here recently, but the distributor says they should be back soon.... Agreed on the Goldring - I think on my system there would not be a huge difference between the 1022 and 1042. Thanks so much for introducing me to the soldering family :-) If I can help you here from the UK at all, please, please ask. Thanks again for your reply. Blessings, Irve

Hi Ian. Wow -- I was never on a F1 course before! Thank you for the tour and the peek at audio stores there. I miss that type of retailing here in the US -- to come even close to seeing this level of equipment, I have to drive an hour to Philadelphia or hop on a train to Manhattan. I look forward to the upcoming shoot-out, most reviews are saying the Goldring is a very solid cartridge. I had to think of you earlier this week -- I scored an Electro Research A75 amp to go with my (favorite) EK 1 preamp, both were made in Singapore. I'd been hunting one for several years. Ian, I picked up two new phono stages for a second system, the Audio Alchemy PPA-1 and the newer version of the SimAudio 310LP. I'm keeping one and it's probably the Audio Alchemy due to the price drop. If you ever get the chance to try out the Audio Alchemy, I think you will like it and right now it's priced from $1795, down to $799 at an online store called Audio Advisor. It's a simple design with no OP Amps and it has a different way of adjusting the Impedance with a Multimeter and adjustment knobs so that you can fine tune in the Impedance, but it's 1-1000 and 47K as the default. Moving magnet is 45db and MC is 66db with both RCA and balanced XLR outs. The settings for the gain are either 45db or 66db, period. The SimAudio is more of a neutral sounding unit with an extra 6db of gain if you use XLR and it has the typical plastic pin adjustments. Michael Fremer reviewed the Alchemy and used it on Analog Planet. The price drop made the Alchemy a steal and when you go to your local dealers see if they have one the parent company is Elac.

Ah, the 1042! You know, i was a bit disappointed with mine at first. I had some sibilance issues, but a bit of time and patience compensated in the end, and now i'm becoming a fan of this old (and a bit ugly) model. The sound has enough "family resemblance" with the Eroica to make us recognize the Goldring sound, but each one has its own character. Looking forward for that P3/Technics duel. 👍

I like the aesthetics of it (and the 1000 series) indeed!!! Let us toast to our vinyl love :-D!!! Thank you for indulging us with your 1042 and Eroica LX!!!! One of my subscribers said the 1042 looks like a duck! LOL Well, it's the 80s aesthetics. In a certain way it's sober than today's models like the ATs with their brash colours, or the Ortofon Bronze with their diamond shape lines. I actually like the Eroica style with its simple vertical lines, and the plain body with no features. In fact, i like it so much that i used it on my channel's photo. 😄 Generally speaking i prefer sobriety, too! Speaking of sobriety, yes, i like to listen to Madeleine Peyroux very much! 😉

Hi Ian! What I find very interesting about your visits to Adelphi Mall is that when I see all of the audiophile equipment and so many small shops under one roof, I wonder - are there so many people wanting high-end audio equipment in Singapore? Of course, there are audiophiles everywhere - but are there enough consumers for 38 stores under 1 roof to survive? Can't wait to see Rega and Technics fighting here... Really interesting. In one side we have the minimalist style against that solid rock dj kinda thing turntable. The SL1200Mk5, in my opinion, has the advantage of having a lot of features, so if we add that to the final decision, the P3 has to win in all those "sound-quality" categories... and that may be a though fight for Rega... Anyways, both are legendary tables, and they were supposedly designed for different costumers needs and preference. That wont be an "apple to apple" comparison in my opinion, but I'm really excited to see the outcome. Cheers

Hi Ian! I am really impressed by your thorough tests and reviews. Great work! I would love to know what you think of the Goldring 1042. Have you had time to listen to it yet? I am just about to purchase a new cartridge for my Edwards Audio tt1 mk2, which is essentially a tweaked Rega planar 2. It has an At 95e cartridge but I want to get something better. I am considering either the G1006, the G1042 or the Nagaoka 200, or perhaps the AT VM 740 or AT VM 540. I currently have the basic Rega Phono mini which you have reviewed. Just wondering which cartridge you would recommend as you have tested most of the equipment and cartridges. Many thanks! Anna

Does Technics still make reel to reels, or was that a refurbished unit??
@HiViNywschannel
@HiViNywschannel 6 жыл бұрын
Dear Buddy from SF ocean now!!! :-D Yes you are right, it is a refurbished unit. Reel-to-reel has interested me a year ago, but that interest has dropped, because the amount of maintenance that has to go into tape decks are just too much. And software wise, those new audiophile quality ones go for a few hundred dollars each. Each tape reel can only last 200 plays or so before tape wear sets in. Hardware wise.... need a lot of expertise to adjust tape head azimuth, etc, etc...just too much for me to stomach. It may be the holy grail of analogue playback, but it comes at a cost, a big one, and lots of headaches to go along with :-D, unless i myself is a very technical person with all the tools. Correct me if you think otherwise and enlighten me :-D
@batman.darthmaul
@batman.darthmaul 6 жыл бұрын
HiViNyws channel I used to own a Nakamichi DRAGON cassette deck back in the day and even that required a fair amount of maintenance. I think reel-to-reel requires even more, but I've never actually owned one. Always been curious, though. I agree it would be the ultimate in sound, at least for material that was originally recorded in analogue. The weather is very cool up here in SF, even during the summer. If you are near the coast, 70 degrees Fahrenheit is about the hottest it gets. It's great!

@@batman.darthmaul Thank you Brother....that's nice to hear your reply, your experience with the Dragon!!!.. gosh...then that R2R machine must require even more... luckily I stayed away. 🏖🌈great weather then in SF and enjoy the cooler weather now my friend!

@batman.darthmaul 6 жыл бұрын
HiViNyws channel Well, with R2R, it's actually easier to clean the heads and other things because everything is so much bigger than a cassette deck. It's easier to get to everything. I don't really know how much maintenance would be required though since I never owned a unit.

Ian.. fab, but I am lost; can't see any review you have done with the Nagaoka MP200 VS the Goldring 1042, yet you do use both with the deck shoot out? So, I have the Technics SL-1200 MKII, and never used by a DJ. I bought it as old/new stock (never used) about 15 years back, so careful play, and always used Nagaoka MP200 (did try the MP150 and found that fine, too) didn't like the MP300, ad way over priced, but what about the Goldring 1042? I note you compared the 1006 to the MP150, so would you say the 1042 is better or as good as the MP200? My main complaint with the Nagaoka range is they wear out fast! 100 to 300 hours max, whereas the Goldrings are more like 500 to 800.

One more thing: if you are going to set the SRA using a microscope, be aware that you can't just draw a line down the center of the stylus tip with your software. The geometry of the Gyger stylus is different than most and the line should be drawn at the back of the stylus.

Hey Ian, you guys have a ton of Audio stores there, how much does it cost to just lick the glass, but for real, you are one of the few guys on KZbin that has truly earned your viewers. You are around some of the finest gear in the world, how many stores are in that mall alone and are there enough stores there that could take up a whole day just looking around. I truly hate that Avid doesn't have any US online stores that I could find to do business with. Technics Reel to Reel, stop it Ian, just stop it, I'm about to faint over here, we only see reel to reel in the movies or at The Audio conventions or trade fest, type of places. That looked like MBL equipment there, wow, just wow, that particular pair of speakers, I would love to here. The gray cloudy day and the fact that it is situated on the waterfront reminds me of the old industrial grain silos on the waterfront of my old hometown of Buffalo, New York. Nothing new on the vinyl front, just enjoying the sound and the music- collecting some great vinyl. A local record store had a sealed Art Blakey album from 1960! Great music and sound! Enjoying lots of jazz and rock. Art Blakey, Dexter Gordon, Charles Lloyd as well as the more famous players- Davis, Coltrane, Rollins. Also discovered a record by one of my favorite artists Sonic Youth- even though I have most of their CDs i did not have "Jet Set Trash" and just bought the vinyl- sounds awesome!
