Nice of Andy to think of you and you for reviewing it! On your video about the Olympus 60mm Macro for street, I mentioned the LX-5 , the successor to the LX-3 and using my LX-5 often for macro and macro street photography. With the small sensor and macro Leica lens, when stopped-down you can keep a lot of background in macro shots discernible. One my favorite images is of a Honey Bee on a flower in a field of dandelions with a waterfall in the background. Small sensor cameras can often rival high-dollar wide-angle Macro lenses. I also like the Panasonic LX5 as it's 10 megapixel or the same as the Leica M8 and I believe the Sensor in the LX5 and likely LX3, like the full-frame sensor are made by Kodak. I had an M8 Leica and the images from the LX5 could easily be mistaken for the M8. I recently up-sampled some LX5 raw images through Topaz, some higher ISO and with the In-camera noise reduction and sharpening turned off got lovely Leica M8/M9 looking images.

I decided to get one of these a bit before your video came out, and I'm not exaggerating when I say that it's reinstilled in me a love for photography. There's so much to love about this little thing. A note about ISO: I personally keep mine on intelligent auto iso, with Max of 200. It actually rarely uses 200, but with the stabilization, I don't really run into issues with low light. As you mentioned, low light performance falls off pretty quick over that!

I have a couple of these and the one I use the most has been beat to hell but still works. These take fantastic in camera black & white photos. No editing required. You should try the film settings as well as making your own film settings. You'll find there is a lot more that these cameras have to offer the more you dig deeper into them.

I have the LX5. LX is a good GR substitute... zoom lens, no dust on sensor, but not quite as sharp. Dynamic Monochrome is a great film sim in the LX line... great street cam.

Before my love affair with Olympus MFT cameras my main tool was the Lumix LX7. Super compact and very capable in view of the wide aperture. I added the optional EVF which was very handy in strong light and the fact that I prefer to look through a viewfinder to compose images. I only shot it in jpeg as at that time I did not edit images but looking back over those I took they are quite acceptable to my eye. Really enjoy your videos David keep them coming.

Indeed! I just posted above about revisiting my LX5 after not using it in a couple of years. I upgraded to the LX7 from the LX5 for the 1080 video but sold it after getting the LX100, and kept the LX5 for macro photography and it uses a smaller version of the CCD I believe was also made by Kodak I had in my old Leica M8 produces M8 looking images.

I have both the LX-2 and LX-3 but need to buy new batteries so I can play with them again. One feature I also loved is taking 3 pictures in a row with different settings, though that only works with jpeg.

Your last comment rings so true with me David, if I take my old 5dMKII out I expect myself to get some good images, where with a compact camera, they are just so much fun.

I had a little Nikon for years, I finally got rid of it when I started noticing more and more hot or dead pixels but I've missed having a pocketable camera. I wound up ordering an LX3, it's not here yet but I'm pretty excited about it. My go-to is an EM10 mkIV, and in lieu of a point-and-shoot pocket camera, I use my S22 a lot but it's really not the same, now, is it?

It is the CCD sensor that was in them up through the LX5 that people desire. The old sensors had a film look and are not overly sharpened like the newer CMOS sensors. I got a an almost new LX5 about 3 yrs. Ago for just under a couple hundred. I am sure it is worth way more than that now, but I won’t be selling anytime soon. Imagine a film camera without the cost of film. Now you know why they cost more every year. Film goes up every year!

Yeah I recently bought film and regretted it. I’ve had a love of ccd cameras since my Nikon D70 and I doubt that’s going away any time soon. I suppose us KZbin monkeys showing off these cameras aren’t helping matters either, but they’re so much fun. Thanks for watching and have a great weekend 🖖

Watched this vid for mental health reasons. I've got one of these little Lumix things, different but similar, bought new (and really only because i wanted GPS). It doesn't do RAW and it's sitting in my box of unloved curiosities that will one day fund a new lens. I used it as a sort of convenient notebook on wanders, but every time i got a good image with it i ended up filled with self-loathing for being too slack to carry a camera that would give me a file that i could really do something with. And in case that sounds like i've got some sort of elevated opinion of my value in the photographic universe, i mainly shoot original 4/3 on native and vintage glass. There, i've got that drivel off my chest and i feel better. Thank you, as always, for your therapeutic video and for keeping it real. All the best from a cabin in a swamp in a rainforest in winter in New Zealand. PS: City 3 - Inter 1... you read it here first.

Great channel David, just subscribed. I've been hovering over the buy it now button on a D-lux 4 at £250, then spotted an LX3 for £49.95 !! I'd like to think i've saved myself £200 but in reality it's money for something else as well 😂😂😂

Another cool one David, and a big woohoo to Andy for sending you the camera, that was very kind of him. I can't believe how expensive things like the LX1 are now - those have really shot up. Great set of pics, I guess as ever, the thing I'd miss the most is an EVF - certainly on sunny days anyway. I was inspired by your last video and actually went out shooting with my Zeiss Contaflex last weekend - I'm now tantalisingly close to finishing the film so that long awaited demo video might actually happen one day soon. Following that inspiration I figured I'd put a film in one of my other cameras - naturally you'd think I'd pick one of the ones that worked, but no, I wanted to use the Soviet KMZ "Start" camera which had a few issues - "that'll only take a couple of hours to fix" or so I thought - many hours later, including crawling around on the floor to find the tiny screw that I dropped and I now have a more or less fully functional camera ready to take some film (it had been seriously butchered by the person who tried to repair it before, completely missing the thing that was actually wrong and tampering with everything else instead). I guess the demo of that camera will come out in about 2 years, once I've finished that film!!!

Yeah an evf is way better in bright conditions. I’m planning another film shoot soon and I might feel better about it now I know the praktica works with no issues. I almost bought myself a Nikon 50mm for my f70 to avoid some of the clunkiness but decided against it since it’s unlikely I’ll ever shoot film again unless the prices sort themselves out lol. Thanks for watching, Tim🖖
@GrumpyTim Жыл бұрын
@@DavidFlowerOfficial Yeah, I hadn't looked at processing prices for a year or three - with the cost of the film and the processing it's a bit off-putting now. Many years ago I used to do a bit of home processing - it's far more fun if you're in control of the whole process, but I have way too much stuff to dedicate some space to set up a dark room these days! It was always very relaxing and therapeutic doing black and white dark room work.
@DavidFlowerOfficial Жыл бұрын
My wife covered that side of photography when she was at college, dark room work etc. I think it’s something I’ll look at in the future but on medium format (providing the prices don’t continue to rise at stupid rates). At this point though, I’m happy shooting with the old compact cameras or vintage lenses on my other cameras to get a different look🖖

@@DavidFlowerOfficialI just found one today in excellent condition. 150 euros is crazy but I needed something to replace my TL500/EX1. The Samsung is absolutely gorgeous but has super low speed at continuous shooting. This is the main reason. The second reason is to hold a secret Leica in my hands:) Why do people pay so much more for those second hand red dots? Everyone knows it's absolutely identical..😂

If you had to choose between the LX3 and the G10, which one would you go with? I love my G9, thinking of trying out the LX3! Excellent photographs!
@DavidFlowerOfficial Жыл бұрын
Oh man, I do love that G10, but for the last month it’s sat on the shelf whilst the LX3 has been in my bag every day. The extra reach on the G10 is super useful for the way I like to shoot, but there’s something about the quality of the images from the LX3 and the fact it’s absolutely tiny that makes it a bit more attractive to carry everywhere. Thanks for watching 🖖
