An abandoned baby bird, in urgent need of food, warmth, and shelter, was brought to me on the evening of May 22. While I always recommend putting the bird back in the nest, so that the adult birds will raise it properly, it was not an option in this case: no nest, no adult birds, plummeting nighttime temperatures approaching, and this nestling had been screaming for food all day long, with no assistance from other birds.
Watch this video to see his progress over the next ten days!
And then, watch part II.

OMGosh! that makes sense, thank you for the info. I just rescued a baby starling & I was confused as to why this one looks so different from the one I have. (My baby starling has a bright yellow mouth inside, as opposed the the red-ish mouth of this baby bird).

We did this when we were kids in the mid 60's in central Massachusetts. One time we had three birds. Elm trees were removed due to disease and when the tall tree came down so did the nest of birds. My Mom, when she was feeding them and they would chirp, she would "beep" back at them. Before they could fly they would run along behind us in the backyard, fly a little run a little. They would take a bath in a puddle on the picnic table. As soon as they could fly we let them be outside all the time. We could walk out on the back stoop and hear them chirping and when we would "beep' back they would fly down to us and land on our finger. The neighbors were amazed! Everyone in the area knew who to bring lost birds to. We raised many birds this way. Even today at 72 years old I'm still feeding birds. Only now I'm in central Florida and they're semi wild hawks. Never captive, always free, but they will sometimes come if I call to them. One will fly down and grab food off a plate that I am holding in my hand. This level of trust took years to develop. The neighbors are amazed.

Hi I have a question for you Mike. I have a momma sparrow living somewhere in our roof area. She keeps kicking the baby’s out or they’re just falling. But I have one that is still alive I’ve had him for almost 4 days. Eating and poops are good. He’s energetic and all but only leans on his right side. When he eats his little head is so bent. I’m not sure if maybe he was injured from the fall or sick possible. Which scares me- I don’t know if I could get sick from him. I can’t find any information on line about this. Please is you have any answers. I can’t morally stop caring for him at this point. 🥺

It’s nice that he’s trying to save a bird, but he’s saving the WRONG SPECIES of bird. Starlings are an invasive species in the United States. They kill native songbirds, including purple martins. Purple martins can no longer nest in the eastern United States because of starlings and other invasive species out-competing them for nesting sites. This guy needs to quit saving starlings. Kill them. Spend your time and money saving native species of birds.

@@romyhernandez7811 An educator, that's who. Try to educate your own dumbass about the balance of nature and things such as starlings that are destroying native species in the United States. Here's another animal you can research: The Burmese Python, imported by stupid people, and got loose in the wild, are now multiplying in Florida and wiping out many species of animals. Here's another: Check out KZbin channel: Purple Martin Conservation, and see how European Starlings and House Sparrows have out-competed the Purple Martin for nesting sites in the US. Here's another link for you to check. EDUCATE YOURSELF: www.purplemartin.org/purple-martins/competitors/64/non-native/ Also, trust that I have helped many people and animals over my lifetime, certainly more than you will ever do, you pompous asshole. "Leave him in peace?" Hell no, I won't do that! I will always fight to save billions of native species of animals in the United States. You can go to hell with your rude comment. You probably leave your cat roam outside, to kill native species of songbirds, just for sport. That's another pitiful situation that has killed millions of native species of songbirds and other native animals, as well. Cats are largely responsible for 33 species of songbirds going extinct. Hi Mike. Chris and Sara Bellore from Staten Island N.Y. We just adopted a Starling yesterday evening. My wife brought him home from a strip mall where she found him on the ground along rhe wall. He must have fell out of a nest that is above the roll down gates of a pizzeria. Anyway, there he is; "Brooks," as we named him, after the character from the movie, "Shawshank Redemption." We are very grateful for your supportive video. Thanks for the pointers. He's sleeping now. He's a bit older than the one that was in the beginning of the video. I suppose in 30 days he'll be fluttering around if we can keep him healthy. I noticed that you had a Yankee AND Mets shirt on in the video. Cardinal Ring TOO! Baseball Bird Man! Again, thanks Mike, and God Bless you as you are a gentleman and a kind soul.

Very good lesson. I rescued two naked woodpecker nestlings still with closed eyes following a storm. Followed your examples with feeding but also gave them live mealworms. Got in some tree branches for them to peck and jump. They grew so fast in three weeks abled to fight each other and flew away like rockets. One thing I found out about woodpeckers, they have strong sharp peckers with wriggly tongues coming out like serpent. They also attacked their mealworms as if they were snakes. Beautiful experience raising them.

Bird Rescue Reminder: Whenever Possible, Put The Bird Back In The Nest. This is job one, because no one can raise the bird better than the parent bird. I never take a bird if there is a viable nest, or any way for the parent to feed it. Honestly, it is best to stay out of it, and let the adult birds do their normal work. Only intervene, when there is no nest, no parent, or if there is immediate urgent need to save the bird's life. Knowing when to help, and when NOT to help, is the hard decision we all make. Encouragement and gratitude to anyone who cares, and anyone who helps these beautiful creatures. Great vibes everyone, fly on! :-)

I couldn't agree with this more. I tried to save a baby bird I found on a canal path, its a LOT of work, and it will most likely die, mine did, and next time I find one I will put it in the trees nearby. The moral of the story is, your good intentions will only get you so far.
@mikeyfranz
@mikeyfranz 5 жыл бұрын
The statistics say that most birds that need intervention, do die within the first 24 hours. But if you can get them stabilized, fed, and sheltered, and they last a couple of days, it can actually be a positive outcome.

I wouldn't know the statistics, but I am agreeing with you that most people that don't have the time to dedicate to a baby bird should put it in the tree undergrowth. What you do is admirable, and a great deed, but most people that take on this task, no matter how good their intentions, most likely it will die... sometimes just through stress. Oh and one more point, birds don't like being looked down on, it scares them, they think you are a predator. ;)

@@mikeyfranz Did you know that you can actually teach Starlings to talk ? I read a book about a lady who did just that and the bird could speak severel short phrases, one was "I LOVE YOU" ! I've been feeding the birds for many years now and always liked listening to the big flock of starlings sing in the trees. No, not sing really, so much as "talk " to each other ! The number of sounds they can emit is unbelievable , one would think there must be 50 different kinds of birds out there. I guess that's why they can learn to talk, like parrots do . They never came to my feeders until this past winter . 2 of them, and they waited their turn to feed and never bothered any of my smaller birds.

That's funny that's the same thing I think when people have children Ew! they want to change shity diapers for the next 9 months and then put up with their attitudes they want to give you and inform you of how stupid you are and how much better their friends are no that's not for me I will just have animal children🙏😌

Well let's see here. If you told the little guy you wasn't his Mother you'd have a fighter on your hands. Step 2 it's not always the big things that make you a Heroe it's the small things you do. And by that your a Heroe plan and simple. Thanks For Caring You get a 10+ 😇

This is a baby Common Grackle. I'm raising a Starling, and though they are similar, Starlings have much shorter tails and a tiny hook at the tip of their beaks. That being said... GOOD JOB!!!💖

After my one more thought I tell you about a baby blue jay I should have at least taken in the house for one night ... One more thought thank you for doing this and I wonder how many baby birds this video will help save since you've taken the time to film this little guy no people should know how to help other birds. I had a baby blue jay in my yard and apparently he was the one that wasn't ready to fly but followed his siblings out of the nest. He was thirsty and was trying to get water that I had out for the birds I didn't have a cage to put them in for the night because he was on the ground and I was worried a predator one of the feral cats or skunk or somebody would come along and eat him because he was constantly crying for his parents. When I woke up in the morning I saw his little feathers scattered and I felt heartsick. I was thinking the night before of putting them in a box and then letting him out the next day to keep them safe and when I was a kid we did that and I think we had a board or something on top of the box and the bird kept trying to get out that we were trying to feed and it got its head through the box but not its body and it dyed it hung itself. So I didn't want that to happen to this little guy but I should have followed my instincts and put them in a box overnight. A few weeks later I was in the thrift shop and there was a bird cage for five bucks and I bought it because if this ever happened again I thought I'd have a cage ready to put the bird in until he could join his parents. But he was a lot older than this bird that you rescued... You're the lifesaver
