the youtuber reads with rachel has said before that authors shouldn't read reviews on their work, and i fully agree with that. there's a huge difference between critique from an editor or fellow author and a review of an author's work as a product from a consumer. reviews are not meant to be nice or help the author; they're meant to give opinions that might help other readers decide whether or not the work is something they'd be interested in reading.

2:10 This is SUCHHH a horrible take. ANYONE can write a book, just because you wrote one doesn't mean you deserve extra points for effort. And if you write a bad book you will get bad reviews, because anyone can write any book, but not everyone can write good books consistently.
@GA_131
@GA_131 8 ай бұрын
As someone who has been writing for years and has never finished a book, I also agree. Writing an entire book is a accomplishment, but that doesn’t mean you have to rate only three and above. Because literally anyone can write whatever they want. It’s based on the content of the book, not necessarily the authors effort (though that can be a big factor in producing a good book)

yea, exactly. anyone who DOESN'T write a book would be like.. a negative score. Thats how the range works. I'll give whatever shit book i want 0 stars.

also- besides the potential that the writing might be bad or the plot or anything, there are books that are substantially bad and harmful, books that spread misinformation, books that are bigoted, books that glorify SA and abuse, books that promote violence or hate, etc. and those books should not be given those 3 stars, no matter how much time they put into them

about the "on/by accident" thing, i have something similar. if someone says "whenever" when they mean "when" in a youtube video or something i have to stop watching it. it bothers me so much. Wait, people DON'T like when books are written in the 3rd person??? When I was at school we were taught that writing in the first person is super unprofessional and amateur qnd that all good books must be written in 3rd person. And I 100% believe that.b

i dont think i have EVER seen an actual book written in 1st person.. i've seen a few 2nd person books, specifically choose your own adventure books, but for the most part its only 3rd person ive seen.. in the book im writing now, i had originally planned for it to be 1st person but i didnt like it, so i changed it to third. it was SO much easier to work with it. the only times i plan to go back to 1st person is for select chapters where something important happens with a character, and i need to show their thoughts.

as someone who’s graduating this year with a BFA in writing, i could not disagree more with that tiktok. yes, writing is hard work. it’s a lot of starting and stopping, moments of glory because you finally found out how that scene is going to play out, and being blocked. it’s hard. it sucks. but any type of art is hard. drawing is hard. designing furniture is hard. making a film is hard. but you put in that effort because you want to create an amazing piece or artwork that stands the test of time. i would be insulted if someone gave me a three stars out of pity; i want honesty. you deserve honesty when you pour your heart and effort into your work, not fucking three stars to make the reviewer feel better about themselves

Also is like you said, now the 3 stars would be like 1 star, but then there would be few room for 4 stars and 5 stars books THEY ARE 4 STARS AND 5 STARS FOR A REASON, THEY OWNED MY HEART. If we use 3 stars as minimum then the scale has to be from 1 out of 10 stars, and put 3 stars for courtesy. I like participation trophies tho but this is not that, this would be worse Also sameeee I usually don't care about the reviews before reading the book

When I started taking steps toward that, I realized I couldn’t take the pressure of failing or people heckling me. When I tried to push myself through it, I had a mental breakdown! So I stepped back. It didn’t mean that the industry needs to change to suit my needs! Authors online keep staying delusional.

Speaking purely in a business perspective, 3 stars is probably the worse score a book can get. 1 to 2 stars tells you theres something wrong with the book that can be fixed. Getting canned also means your story has caused strong emotions and it guides you on what demographics your story is made for. 3 stars is meh, its consumable slop no one recommends or shouts how terrible it is. I rate books 3 or 2 stars if i forgot the book before i even put it down.

Unfortunately, I am one of those who CAN write and have received several accolades because of my writing ability, including awards and compensation, and have been featured in publications. Still, I'm also a reformed Wattpad smut writer. They were horrible. The writing skill was okay at the time but the content is cringe and I wish I never wrote it. 😭

This booktok opinion made my brain want to explode. I am a writer. I have written, to completion, four books (long ass books) and I am currently writing two more (depending on the day) and you know what? If you read my book and you want to rate it? It is none of my business what rating you give it. If you go the extra mile and you say what you hated about it, I am genuinely grateful, one star or not, because I know from personal experience that what you hate about a book could be what gets someone else to read it. Why? Reading is subjective. If you can't deal, as a grown ass adult, with the fact that not everyone will love what you write... because that's impossible even if you are a great writer in terms of your technical skill....do not publish your work, especially if you intend on reading the reviews. Your mental health will suffer for it. I am sure Colleen Hoover, EL James, and Stephanie Myers put some sort of effort into what they wrote too but in my opinion, I would only give everything all of them have ever written one star if zero stars were not an option. 😂

it's weird that she says authors should deserve it for editing and publishing a book, even though the writer themselves isn't the one who edits or publishes. sure there's an editing process, but the actual "editor" isn't the writer usually. also it'd be really funny if everyone gave her book 2 stars when it's published.

1. Condolences on your allergy, sounds inconvenient in the world we live in 2. Girly pop the reviews aren’t really for you, they’re for other readers 3. Yes making things is hard and you should be proud of yourself for the things you like about your work but it’s equally important to take criticism and critique. It’s the only way to improve long term. Reviewers probably aren’t giving critique on average but lots of authors pay for it.

The feeling of giving a book less than three stars is RISING RIGHT NOW!! I am sorry, I write stories myself, but that does not make me entitled to a rating that is based on the feeling of the moment - just no. NO. A five star should be rare, not a given, and if you feel different then I am sorry but our perspectives on the world are extremely different. A five star is a gift, not a certainty, and three stars is not bad, it is actually pretty good. Mediocrity is not bad, it is good and anything "better" is just that, better. You can not always be perfect and that is the way of life, being perfect is to not be natural, it is to be an ideal of photoshoped and ingenious. Taking criticism is a huge part of growing and getting better in the things that you want to grow in, and it is what it is.

It’s so weird to demand people rate books highly. They presumably bought the book.. meaning they paid money to the author. THAT is the reward for the hard work. Authors don’t deserve good reviews just because they worked hard. It’s admirable, yes, but that doesn’t mean that their work has to be liked by everyone. I’ve spent weeks on drawings, months on paintings sometimes, and guess what- sometimes they still suck. And that’s fine.

Creative Endeavors, while they may be grueling, tiresome, and painful experience, are undertaken at one's own obligation. No one made you write a novel, or paint a picture, or compose a song. You did so for personal fulfillment and you believed it was good enough to share with the world. Again, nobody made you, and not everyone is going to appreciate it. If it's not good, say, "okay, I'll do better, but I'm going to keep doing it, because I love it," and you'll never again be afraid of a 1 star review. You'll be happy someone took the time to reply.
