Funny when you 1st do a video on KZbin you have no idea that maybe someday it will have 10's of 1000's of views. Just because I have worked like this for 20 years doesn't make it safe for me either. I have gotten better after this video to turn it off prior to working on it. Thanks for watching and commenting!

Since you expected "someone would comment", I'll do it. I would have shut the main power off to the house for this work. So much safer. Especially when instructing others how to do something. Better to show it the right way, then explain how everyone else should do it it. Maybe it's my USAF aircraft electrician training. But with all that, this was extremely helpful showing how this installation isn't as complicated as I would have expected.

Is that an outlet specifically meant for EV charging? If it’s one of those cheap ones it’ll melt very quickly and cause massive issues. I would highly recommend the wall connector
@YourFloridaElectrician11 күн бұрын
Hey Will. The outlet is one the Homeowner had removed and installed the wall connector there. He was not satisfied with the charging speed at 20 amps or so. (30 amp rated circuit) So he asked me to hardwire his wall connector to a 60-amp circuit. The outlet is the original that was there when the house was built so I'm sure it is not an EV rated outlet. I know he planned on using that outlet with his mobile connector but only if it was necessary, so I was not too worried about the outlet itself because it was going to be lightly used if used at all. Thank you for watching and commenting!! 😀
@will049911 күн бұрын
@ good that he will use the wall connector primarily. I had a certified electrician install one of those NEMA 14-50 outlets for us and they used a cheap outlet without telling us and it melted within a month. Needless to say I had them come out and get a wall connector provisioned but the scars still remain from that experience. Hope they enjoy that wall connector!
@YourFloridaElectrician11 күн бұрын
@@will0499 Wow sorry for your experience. I have heard that happening with other installations as well. I think what happens is the terminations in most cases are not torqued properly or even tightened. I'm luckily not had any problems with any of my installs. Enjoy your EV charger as well.

Oppps. You forgot to install the zip tie on the wall plate of the Tesla Wall Connector LOL... 🤨 Other than that, a great installation. Will be doing my install with an electrician buddy of mine but using 6/2 romex and a 40 amp breaker since I don't need 50 amp (or 60 amp if using #6 thhn in conduit). I'm sure my buddy will say to put in the 50 amp breaker though. My panel is only 125 amp and with electric tankless water heater and everything else, prefer to just eliminate any possible main breaker tripping issue (I know I can commission it for whatever less than max for breaker if install 50 amp breaker anyway). For 1 Tesla, 40 amp breaker at 32 amp continuous is more than enough for me at about 29 miles per hour charge on a Model Y. Thanks for the great video!!!

Very helpful video. I live in florida too. After watching your video I feel more confident to do it myself. But instead of 60amp breaker, I would like to use 50amp breaker,which can output 40A and I think that’s enough for my case. And I hope you can see my comment and give me a advise. My question is : - Can I still use 6AWG THHN (for Ground Wire and 2 Hot Wire) with the 50amp breaker? - And does the position of red wire and black wire is matter ? If somehow I can’t figure out? Thanks a lot !
@YourFloridaElectrician7 ай бұрын
Nhan. Position of the red and black wire doesn’t matter. unless you were doing some sort of sense metering or smart home metering and you wanted to keep the faces correct. You can run number six with the 50 amp breaker. You can always go bigger with the wire size but not smaller. So keeping it at #6 is fine. You could probably downsize the ground wire to number eight if you wanted to save a couple bucks. Thanks for watching and commenting. Please be careful and turn off your power during your install ! My house is being built with a similar panel box as the one in the video. I cannot install the Wall Charger before closing but I’m allowed to either put conduit in place or put 6/2 MC cable (not connected ti panel) and route it through the garage ceiling and drop it on the opposite wall( about a 30-40 ft run and all behind drywall). I’m also in Florida. What is your recommendation? Do conduit behind drywall or do 6/2MC behind drywall?
@YourFloridaElectrician11 ай бұрын
Sounds like you’re still in the rough-in stage if you’re talking about putting it behind the drywall. If that’s the case just run out some 6-2 romex to a two gang nail on box that is a deep box . Later it can be trimmed with a 14-50 outlet or if the box is located high enough and enough wire is left there you can bring it right into the back of the future EV charger. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching.

Any particular reason you wouldn't drill a small hole from the center of the knock out from the inside of the panel to mark your center on the outside, drywall side?
@YourFloridaElectrician Жыл бұрын
You can do that also. I tried before to try to hit the center of the concentric, but the drill is too fat to make a straight line for one. Secondly you have to make sure the electrical panel is turned off and make sure you remove any breakers that are in the way. I prefer, not necessarily the right way, to use a level and work my way around the outside and mark the point I want to make my hole. Doesn't have to be surgically accurate. You're going to have to fill in some sort of hole after your install anyways. Thanks for asking. Much appreciated. Remember to consider subscribing, sharing and liking if you have not already. @YourFloridaElectrician11 ай бұрын
Hey James. Thanks for watching and commenting. The home owner had this outlet originally. Then he installed the Tesla charger in it's place but was not satisfied with the charging rate at 30 amps. Hence the reason he called me. I simply removed the charger and re-installed the outlet. If the outlet was a 14-50 on a 30 amp circuit it really doesn't matter. As long as we fuse the circuit at 30 amps because the wiring installed is only #10 AWG for 30 amps. The outlet can handle 50 amps but will never see that amperage. Home owner has a Tesla NEMA adapter bundle that he plans on using to charge a second vehicle using that outlet with a Tesla portable charger that used to come with the car. He can set it at any amperage as long as it is less than the 30 amps the circuit is rated for. Plus now he can charge at 60 amps or 48 Mph charge rate with the Tesla EV wall connector relocated next to the electrical panel and on a 60 amp breaker and rated wiring. Thanks again!

@YourFloridaElectrician Жыл бұрын
If there are breaker spaces available in your outside 200 amp panel I would definitely recommend putting the 60-amp breaker out there. Your 100 amp panel wiring may not be enough to run the 60 amps. If you have no choice but to install in the 100 amp panel. I would use no more than a 30 breaker and set your EV charger to only charge at about 25 amps max. Hope this helps. Ok. When I was talking about metering. There are products out there like www.sense.com. You can buy a meter to install inside your electrical panel that you can put devices called "CT's" or current transformers. These will read how much power your house is using or certain circuits if you want. It connects to your phone and you can monitor your homes usage anytime. It also keeps history and tries to identify certain electrical devices in the home like the dishwasher or the fridge so you can track their usage individually. I hope this helps. Great question by the way.

@YourFloridaElectrician Жыл бұрын
Hey James. The wall connector wouldn't know if the power it's receiving is coming directly from the breaker or from being plugged into a Nema 6-50 Plug. Make sure the following is true: - The plug you make to connect to the wall connector can carry at least 50 amps. - Be a 3 wire. You only need two hots and a ground. - The breaker that the Nema 6-50R is fed from is a 50 amp two pole. - You set in the commissioning for the wall connector that the breaker it is connected to is 50a. No greater. I see no reason for a fault in this type of set up. Thanks for the question. Hope this helps.

When the wires rotated in the breaker panel towards the breakers may have had protential to touch the bus bars. The ground wire being inserted into the bus bars using a tool whilte the whole panel was live is also a big yikes. All this being said... if the novice is wanting to use this video as a guide please don't do it this way. Also, the nema 1450 receptacle, that the mobile connector was plugged into was drawing 24 amps, the wire seems to be either 14ga or 12ga, neither of which can handle that amount of current per code.
