I mostly mig weld but had a go at Tig and I loved it so I am going to start learning that as well. When I worked at Maersk Container Industry in Denmark back in the late 90's, we mig brazed the thin outer shell of the sandwich panels of the reefers to the bottom rails. I didn't realize untill now what it actually was. It was primarily done by machine (welder on rails guided by a roller on the edge of the panel), but in the beginning in particular, there would be a lot of repairs needed afterwards, as there was sealant under the edge of the panel that sometimes leaked out and disturbed the brazing. But it makes sense. The panels were already spot welded to the rails, so there wasn't much to gain from welding the edge, as it just needed to be sealed before being spray galvanized (molten zink being sprayed onto the reefers by robots) and painted.

One suggestion: Maybe talk a little about how settings/gas differ from a similar size steel filler (no need for absolute settings, just the difference from steel) and it would be nice to hear some observations about how it behaves as it lays into the wel... uh, braze pool. Does mig brazing with silicone bronze work on aluminium? It looks aluminium in the shot with the band saw, but can't find anything about it online, just TIG.
@PickThatUp2 жыл бұрын
There are brazing alloys to braze aluminum, but pretty sure silicon bronze is a no...i think the brazing alloys for aluminum are zinc-based, maybe with magnesium. Also not sure if the aluminum brazing alloys are available on spools for wirefeeders, I've just seen them as rods for use with gas torches.
@TimWelds2 жыл бұрын
Silicon bronze doesn't work on aluminum. It's stainless steel, but it does look a lot like aluminum in the video. As far as rods for aluminum, the ones I've seen are called alumiweld and Aladdin 3 in 1. They just work with a propane or MAPP torch. I have a video on the channel about them, they work fairly well.
@zekenoscooter_86082 жыл бұрын
I've used the alumiweld rods too. If you're experienced brazing, then have at it, if the process is new to you, I highly recommend good guidance (like Tim's) and the practice it a bit first. I found it a little bit tricky. Not quite like anything else I've ever done.

Do you have a video about welding pipe? Building my own turbo kit with a lot of pie cuts, using MIG, flat welding I have down, but my gun control moving around the pipe is crap and I’m not staying consistent.
@TimWelds2 жыл бұрын
I don't have a video about thin tubing. I've welded pie cuts before, but only with TIG. Try welding in short segments (1"-2"), repositioning in between so that you can maintain your stickout and gun angle. One of the biggest problems when welding out of position is that the wire speed and voltage often need to be a bit lower than the recommended settings. For example, the recommended settings on every Miller I've had are on the hot side, which works in the flat and horizontal position, but turns into a mess on vertical and overhead. I usually just move down 1-2 material thicknesses and that gets me in the ballpark. Hope this helps!
