Awesome, Jens. I was thinking about a focus stacking tool for ages. This one might be it. Thanks for sharing 🙏.

Highly specialized gear and software for the intended purpose, Jens. Good for serious, high volume work in this genre. My hunch is that most viewers are at a less intensive level of macro work, where PS combined with slight on-lens focus adjustments meet their needs. Suggestion for future vids - deeper, yet, with shots through a microscope. Cheers!

Nice video ! Thank you. And a good idea. Cheaper than a specialized rail. And can be used for video too !

Can you use this slide vertically for top down shooting?

Great video but I can see that you are using Sony A7R IV and this camera has a built in Focus Tracking, why do not you use it for bracketing? what is the advantage of using slider over the camera built in?
@anotherperspective30762 жыл бұрын
It does? Sorry can you share a link?

The insects need to stay perfectly still for a long time for this to work right? So only dead insects?
@anotherperspective30762 жыл бұрын
When you are lucky to be able to set up tripod and slider it will also work. Slightly movement can be corrected by helios on posy

@@anotherperspective3076 In my experience they always walk around/away/fly away. Impossible to focusstack.

I almost exclusively photograph live insects in nature, or on a LED panel for white background. For photos on the LED panel I may use temporary anaesthesia with CO2 or gas from a "Dust-Off" spray to calm down hyperactive insects (does not always work, trial and error necessary). But even with anaesthesia, focus bracketing of live insects needs a superfast burst of photos. On my Canon 90D I use the high speed shutter mode, and a Laowa/Venus/Kuangren twin flash with diffusers. The flash is set at 1/128 or 1/64 power for a fast recycling time. This set up allows a handheld burst of up to 35 photos in 3 seconds. I prefer to bracket the focus with the focus ring rather than moving the camera when using the Laowa 100 mm macro lens. The success rate of stacking this way is about 30-50%, because of insects movements, gaps in the stack or unwanted camera movement. To my knowledge, no rail or slider system is presently fast enough to shoot moving live insects. Mirrorless cameras with in-camera focus bracketing offer some promise, but I am still waiting for convincing examples. You can check some of my white background photos here: www.inaturalist.org/observations?place_id=any&q=MYNS&user_id=cback&verifiable=any .
