why not lower start altitude? i mean. so much thermical action and no one lower the starting position. This might help bc. @ lower position = wind might also be lower.

Yes, that's true. In most competitions, pilots with CCC gliders have less impressive starts.

A St André les alpes, on décollais généralement par 35/40 de vent, Au grand Bo, j'y ai fait des vols merveilleux avec des pointes à 3500 mètres et des vols sur le chinaillon aller retours. Certes la pente est raide, et faire des wagas en dessous était monnaie courante, un jour étant débutant, 20/30 vols je décolle vole toute la matinée, me les gelant je me repose au décollage, me réchauffe au soleil, et redécolle pour un très long vol d'après midi en Juillet, en hivers décollage skis aux pieds du Lachat pour un posé un peu avant le stade de tir qui était avant ,notre attero standard.

Ce n'est pas facile mais on voit bien que ceux qui "prennent le temps" d'avancer vers l'aile au moment du lever s'en sortent mieux que ceux qui semblent vouloir se débarrasser de la formalité du déco.

Cobra works well in smooth laminar wind - can be nasty in swirly, gusty mountain conditions.

@@annejanroeleveld At first I thought "no way" but on further inspection this seems accurate. Wind sock also indicates around the same (on the verge of being fully extended). But now I have no idea how some of these people end up in a competition if they can't even start in 25 km/h wind. Weird.

J'y étais, le bruit n'aide pas mais tout les pilotes sont plutôt aguéris. Certains n'ont pas décolé, mais ceux qui l'ont fait, dont moi, ne sont pas forcement des stupides. Bien à vous.

The problem with most competitors is that they are not actually that experienced. They might fly a lot of hours but not a lot of years and they just jump onto those CCC gliders while never really doing proper ground handling time. It's an ego overload unfortunately. That's why you get so many mid air collisions and terriffic take offs.

25km/h c'est tout à fait faisable pour des pilotes aguerris, ma limite c'est 18/20. Mais je ne comprends pas les gars qui prétendent décoller à 40km/h, avec une mini, je sais pas, mais une voile normale me semble impossible. Même full bar au départ, ça ne laisse pas de marge si les conditions se durcissent... Me trompe-je ?

Weinig cobra starts inderdaad. Het kan op zich wel maar veel piloten lopen niet mee omhoog / waren niet door de knieën gegaan voor de start. Bij zo'n stevige wind start ik zelf altijd iets lager op de helling. Dan heb je de ruimte om omhoog te lopen en de energie eruit te halen.

This is normal. The 2023 German Open was held in Greifenburg, Austria and the 2024 German Open will be in North Macedonia, the 2024 British Winter Open was in Colombia and the 2024 British Championships will be in St Andre, France.
