Yikes !!! As an instructor, this is hard to watch. I'm guessing you don't get many stronger days there, but those aren't even strong winds. I didn't see one pilot that had set up with a way to control their inflation rate or kill the wing if needed. As and Cs, or Cobra, or center As only, or one of MANY ways to stay in control. Go to a windy flat spot, like a seaside beach, and practice all those. The LAST thing you do on a windy-ish day is spread your entire glider out and have someone hold up the leading edge. Just WOW !!! You want your wing in a rosette with just a couple center cells open, then inflate with just your 2 inner-most As, the wing will open up as it rises, but you also want your Cs in hand to control the rate of inflation and kill the wing if necessary. VERY effective. Having only brakes in hands is pretty much useless to control or deflate the wing.
@Paranorja
@Paranorja Жыл бұрын
I use the same As & C's techniques here in Norway when the winds are strong, and can really recommend it. It gives much more control over just holding to your brakes and you can always adjust the wing position during inflation to face wind direction better

Jeez! I did some freeze framing to check. Who thinks they can do strong windy, gusty launches just on A and brakes? Plenty here by the look of it ...yet they must be used to windy UK launches.

not a lot of wind, no need for cobra

Wow, the same thing all over the world! Very good XC pilots, lots of experience, yet many just either don't like to practice ground handling or never reached a very good level of ground control in strong wind. This hill is actually better than a totally flat hill in the same wind, you only have a small arc in the power zone which means you have less time to react and get ready to turn but it is also faster to be airborne as long as you are in charge, not the glider. It feels strong because they are in the compression area (fast flowing wind close to the top). Pulling the A's and brake, as most of the pilots do in these comps and XC flights, is not the best option. For strong wind I would think it is better to use A's and C's, while moving towards the glider as soon as it is off the ground by a couple of feet. No need for cobra launch. If all the gliders are penetrating and doing fine after launch it indicates the wind speed is way below trim speed of these gliders. Happy and safe flying! 🙏

@@E620SE True. I never flew a 2 liner but I would think that the same idea applies? A's in one hand and B's in the other! Starting from "Rosetta" would be better than the fully open, I guess!
