Anssi Tikanmäki began his music studies at the Sibelius Academy in 1974. There he met Reijo Karvonen (bass) and Esa Juutilainen (flute, recorder, tenor saxophone), with whom he founded the group Ikaros. Guitarist Peter Lerche was recruited elsewhere, as well as Upi Sorvali, who replaced the original drummer. The group toured, made a record (Ikaros 1978) and worked as a studio band for other people's records. Tikanmäki's own career grew out of it into the "Maisemakuvia Suomesta / Finnish Landscapes" album, the core of which was Ikaros playing with the Sibelius Academy orchestra. Interval jumps describe the landscape of Lapland: "... winter turning to spring in the fields of Lapland. Once more, darkness has been overcome. Each day the sun climbs higher, casting its rays on the softly rounded hilltops. Somewhere in its snowy grazing-ground, a herd of reindeer brays. The wind blows across deserted moors and icy marshes, the snow whirls about in narrow canyons. The bare tops of the fjelds look down on the surrounding countryside in proud majesty. The sky is far above, and stretches far, far away. There's room to breathe. And when the sun sets, when dusk envelopes everything, new and magic shapes are silhouetted. The witches of Lapland awaken and set about their business... the dull beat of witch drums can be heard in the hills ..."
