I love your "steal like an artist" idea. I'm a mixed media artist and software designer and I can tell you everyone steals. Artists tend to take inspiration. Software designers under a deadline will heavily take from other designers. :)

I started pottery 19 years ago. I work in earthenware and commercial glazes. There was literally not a lot of information on commercial glazes. No KZbin. I spent so much time with trial and error. I also taught hand building in a community studio. It’s in my blood!

I'm a returning potter after a forced career change in my early 40 s, I'm doing things now that people think are new but I did back then , long story short ? It's all been done before, not much , if anything is actually new, but it's never been done by you before and if you add your own personal touches, bam ! It's definitely not the same old thing! Go on, be inspired, but don't loose yourself with it, it's the you that makes it new ! 🎉

I went to college for ceramics and made all of the glazes and clay for the classes as a side job. It's really not that hard, but I can imagine it isn't very cost effective if you have a small studio with just you using it, it's just a lot of ingredients to ensure you have a variety of colors and styles.

I took my first pottery class in August. I had to find a local potter willing to teach because all the beginner classes were during the middle of the day when I was working. Now I'm trying to make this a thing and figure out how to turn it into a full time gig. My day job is soul sucking and this is the only real thing I have found that restores me. Thanks for your videos, I'm really glad to see different perspectives from many different potters. There are so many good teachers out there and I am thankful for all of you.

Clay is an amazing medium to work in. I started again in pottery after moving to my partners home that was almost 5yrs ago. Took classes in collage while studding photography in the dark room. I found a great community of potters in my new home town. Thank you for sharing your story and work with us out here.

I am inspired by other artists all the time. If they are teaching on you tube, then it is assumed that we as an audience will try to make the object. By the time I glaze my pieces and built them in a similar fashion, they usually look nothing like what the original did. I sell at a local shop and a lot of art fairs. Loved your series trying to make the great throw down pieces. Happy holidays, looking forward to your creativity in the new year!

Thanks for sharing your story, and I hope your holidays are fabulous! I love the concept of taking inspirational works and building on them, making them your own. I don't look at it as stealing (provided one doesn't try to copy and take credit!) and think it is flattering that someone admires a piece so much that they use the concept in their own work. And I have really enjoyed your throw down segments as well.

My opinion on mixing your own glazes and the artistry thereof is that it’s just another tool for you to make YOUR work. Ultimately, I feel every artist wants a style, and making your own glaze can help with that, or not. Personally I love it, it makes me feel more involved and it’s so much cheaper. But painter’s don’t judge the paint the other use, so neither should potter’s if the piece is beautiful!

Living in the US, people not leaving their house / being less willing to go out is here too. I think people have trouble leaving home and making friends since COVID, and it seems like it’s all over. Maybe it’s just we got out of the practice of leaving or some people just found it easier to stay home, or everything legitimately has been getting more expensive. Currently moving someplace with more social services and I’m hopeful it will make life a lot easier like you said 💖

I'd be really cool seeing another skilled potter's perspective to show hey, this is why x person's pottery is so great. That, plus if you try to do their art but add your spin on it would be interesting.

I lived in the EU for almost 8 years for my studies and I prefer it over the US completely. The freedom you get from the safety is unmatched. I miss the freedom I had to go wherever I wanted at whatever hour of the day and feel safe. There was a diversity of ideas that is still unmatched, especially in the media. I miss the freedom people had to speak their mind and different ideologies that weren't ameri-centric. In the US, I prefer the cultural and racial diversity.
