Hey there! Just wanted to let you know that I started watching your vids after I'd applied to my program at Harvard- and then saw your face in the admissions packet after I got accepted!!! Such a cool and surreal moment 😊 Thanks for giving me a peek at what life as a PhD might be like there. Even though we are in very different fields- I'm a social scientist- I found your content very helpful and your passion very relatable! Hope to see you on campus this fall! ☺

Congrats on your acceptance! Can I ask which social science department you're in? And what do you think helped make your application successful? I'm thinking of applying for anthropology this cycle.

Thanks in advance for the videos about the admission process (your videos have always helped me and gave me good vibes). It just would be more beneficial if you could upload them sooner because the application time is so soon, thanks again.:X

Lillian, what do you mean by "great recommendation letters" ??

Hey Lillian, I've watched your videos and gained a lot of information from them. So thank you for that. And also can you please tell me or make a video of how to get the HCSI Internship at Harvard. I'm currently a 3rd-year Biotechnology student in one of the Indian Universities. It will be of great help if you could guide me. Thank you and stay safe.

Hi lillian , wanted to ask u that for harvard , if i am interested in doing pHD in ENGLISH, is it necessary to do My MA first or can i apply for pHd directly after my undergrad ?
@lillianinequilibrium5 жыл бұрын
Hi Himadri, this really depends on the field and the school. In life sciences you can usually apply to PhD directly. But I know in some social sciences it is much harder to get into a Ph.D without a masters. I'd contact departments you are interested in to ask.

Hi Lillian, for programs that are GRE-optional, would you recommend studying and taking the test anyway? What if my weakness is standardized testing?

Hey Lilian, I wanted some feedback. I have a degree in materials science and I want to try for a phd in nanotechnology. My research is not in the same direction but I am really interested in that. I come from a place where I cant work on nano. I prefer not taking a gap year to work on it. Do you think it is possible to get a phd in a sub speciality of your field which u haven't done research in but are very interested in. Nano is a part of materials science. I am planning to create a blog about it to prove my interest in that. I am planning to self study stuff. But I dont think you can put that on a resume right? I have tried to work in multiple projects which have not been intensive over my undergrad. One wasn't a non intensive but a very unique project in the sense it lacks a major reference point and it was all my idea and work. During my masters I will be doing an intensive project over a year unrelated to nano. Please advise. Thanking you.

Hi S Sreya, So a lot of these issues are completely field dependent. In biology it is completely common to do a PhD in something you had no prior experience in. In fact, it is rather standard. But I can't speak for materials science as a field - you need to get in contact with either professors you know in the field or people whose labs you'd be interested in to know for sure. You can't put a blog on a resume but you can definitely bring it up in conversation to show your passion.

The highest GPA I could possibly obtain before applying is 3.9/4.3 (applying in my final year of undergrad) and I don't know whether this would be competitive enough.

Hello, do you think it's absolutely necessary that a professor knows you before the application?
@lillianinequilibrium Жыл бұрын
It depends on the program/field. If you're applying directly into someone's group, then I would say it's necessary to have at least made contact. But many programs do not run that way (you are accepted first and then do rotations, then select the professor) and for those you don't have to.

finally after a long time

Do you think a years worth of research experience will be enough (8 months from co-op program and 4 months from honors)?
@lillianinequilibrium5 жыл бұрын
It's more research than I had, but whether something is enough really depends on the quality of the time spent researching.
@RockieAtlas5 жыл бұрын
@@lillianinequilibrium Thank you for getting back to me. Also did you apply in your last year of undergrad or waited till you graduated? I'm worried if I apply in my final year they won't know what I'll get overall and in future courses.
