Hi Lillian, do you have any insight on when the award announcement comes out? The PDF just says June 😅

Hi Lilian, so nice to see you back! I followed you when I was applying for PhD in 2020 and 2022, unfortunately I did not make it despite I received campus interviews. However, I secured a position as Senior Research Associate in biotech industry, which I really enjoy. But now, I would love to switch from bench to a consultant in biotech, and it couldn't be better if you could share some experience when you prepare these interviews. I know they are quite different from tech positions (like the position I am at now), and I have no clue on what consulting companies are looking for. Thanks a lot, and I look forward to hearing from you!

Hello there with due respect , here is my sop for phd admission My Statement of purpose (SOP) I want to get admission in this institute because I am doing my research focusing on science specially in physics to find more on renewable energy . I will work on that field with consistency and continuity with the past for the new idea invented and implemented remaining in the mainstream of research within the security framework and green technology relaying on that in space research.My contribution will be on writing good research paper ,designing simulation to find experiment for practical implementation and also to find the efficient way and reduce errors in system where it will be more appropriate.I will try to make estimate on cost to get fund my marketing the idea while it will in on the way to finalize the research outcome. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Also here is my video on the concept I like to do research theses and the abstract. kzbin.info/www/bejne/iqOVdneGndGlos0 Transparent thin film solar cell epitaxial growth induced by using laser beam holographic patterning and monitoring using reflection high energy electron diffraction (RHEED) Abstract: Transparent thin film solar cell can be defined as the solar cell mechanism which will be grown using thin film epitaxial growth on any transparent substrate like glass or tranperent polymer optical fiber and become transparent to transmit solar energy while storing solar photon energy as photo electron like any photo electric cell and which can be used to generate power supply in the portable electronic device such as plds and other peripheral satellite instrument . We will use laser beam holographic patterning for generating three dimensional solar cell photoelectric effect cell using any metal electrode like Na, Li, K, etc and also we will use AgNW for that using solution based thin film epitaxial growth so we can achieve required opto-electro-mechanical properties to operate in various extreme in the weather like high and low temperature and humidity. Introduction: Solar cell can be made from semiconductor hetero junction nano particles from semiconductor material such as silicon or any other extrinsic material that is known as quantum dots can be used in making solar cell . -- -- anwar masum😊😮😊😢😮

Hi Lillian , I’ve been following your content since 2020 , I was inspired by it and allowed me to make some choices as I was starting my PhD . Also , I am pretty sure I saw your picture on a SACNAS post ( pre-pandemic)on their official website once and thought, I have to meet her one day. Of course Covid came and conferences went virtual 😒. Finally I am I’m serving as an officer and president of SACNAS chapter at Oklahoma State University, for an odd reason I thought I might see you in person at the last conference in Portland. Are you part of SACNAS still ?

Hi Alejandro! I'm so grateful to have a fellow SACNISTA still following the channel. Congratulations on your work as president of the SACNAS chapter at Oklahoma State - it's such important work! I am still a part of SACNAS, but unfortunately haven't been able to make the meetings for quite some time. But perhaps our paths will cross one day. :)

First of all Lillian, I love your voice it's so soothing.❤ I could listen you for hours. I'm an international undergrad Student, discovered your channel in senior high school. Right now I'm a freshman at college. Here are the questions that I have and I would be really thankful to you if you'd address them in your future video. 1) There are many PhD programs at Harvard related to Biology. Who should apply to BBS? 2) As an International Undergrad from a 3rd world country there ain't any opportunities for conducting research. How can I get the research experience required for pursuing a PhD at Harvard? I know you might not be able to answer that yourself as your experience is entirely different from mine but still if you'd interview someone who's been through the same circumstances as an international undergrad student from a 3rd world country with no research culture and opportunities passionate about science and research. I would really appreciate that and I guess many of your international subscribers too. 3) The whole process for applying to Harvard as an International student is the same except for the TOEFL part. GRE isn't an requirement I've checked for BBS. Should I prepare for it? 4) If GRE isn't required then the application is all based on the research and papers one has published as an undergrad right?
@lillianinequilibrium8 ай бұрын
Thank you SO much for this thoughtful comment. I'll definitely work on finding folks from the global South who could be informative for you and all my international subscribers who have more limited research opportunities. 💜 I'll make future videos on questions 1 and 2. But to answer 3 and 4: if the GRE isn't a requirement, you do not have to take it at all. I think the exception is perhaps if there was some concern about your academic preparedness - but even then, universities have realized that GREs tell you a lot more about someone's income level than they tell you about potential for grad school success. So I would avoid it altogether. For question 4, the majority of the application will be about the research, yes. But if you haven't published (and even if you have), I think there is a lot to be said about portraying yourself as a full-dimensional person with hobbies and interests. I spent some time in my application showing how much I care about educational equity (that's why I make these KZbin videos!), and I think it was very well received. But that will be a small slice. Since it's a research degree, most of the application should be about research experience.

Welcome back, Lillian! So glad to see you thriving!. Loved your previous videos and excited for future ones :) I would love to hear your motivations behind doing a PhD and what kind of opportunities are out there in the job market after getting a PhD (besides tenure track ofcourse). I think im struggling to decide whether or not to get a PhD. I love research but dont want to be in academia after the PhD, and im kind of confused as to what else this degree can bring me. Would love to hear your perspective!
@lillianinequilibrium8 ай бұрын
Thank you for your comment! I'll add this to my list for sure. :) In the short-term, I can say that there is a lot you can do with a PhD that is not academia, especially depending on what field it is. Depending on your program, you can start a PhD and if you decide it's not for you you can leave with a Master's after a few years. But aside from that, because there are so few tenure-track faculty positions, there are a ton of conversations happening about it! I suggest if you do end up doing a PhD, trying to find a school that has clear support structures to help people find jobs outside of academic paths (e.g. internship programs, networking opportunities, courses, etc).

Welcome back! Your previous videos have been so helpful for me throughout my application process. Would love for your future videos to focus on navigating networking opportunities while pursuing a PhD, exploring jobs outside of academia, trying to keep the creative spark alive in grad school and how to be an effective storyteller in STEM. Excited to see your future videos!

I really love this. My goal is to do my Masters in Genetics Counseling, and possibly doing research under a specific PI. I love how you just work with me. I really want you to focus on what it is like doing school and Research and also what it is like finding that balance. That's what I'm most afraid of - approaching the PI (even though I know her and have an awesome relationship with her as my doctor). I'm nervous about taking the next step and not knowing HOW to make that transition if that makes sense.

Hello, do you think it's absolutely necessary that a professor knows you before the application?
@lillianinequilibrium8 ай бұрын
It depends on the program/field. If you're applying directly into someone's group, then I would say it's necessary to have at least made contact. But many programs do not run that way (you are accepted first and then do rotations, then select the professor) and for those you don't have to.

My field doesn’t require it and often recommends you go in with a blank slate, but some programs (those without rotations) do require it.

As an animal and vet science student, I was told by many in the early stages of my education that vet school was the only viable option for a career (and the only option for grad school that suited my interests). I recently have been moving towards pursuing a Master's/PhD in animal science and working towards working in either academia or animal industry. I feel like everyone in the biological science field goes through a period of questioning, so I'm glad to see someone address it!
